Like everyone said: Sync is a tool, you must not rely on one single tool. Plus: Do not be dull, there are also like a hundret mixing things that can blend songs into each other without actually beatmatching at all or where beatmatching is only a little tool… I think there is too much fuss about beatmatching, as it is only the beginning. The really cool mixing tricks come later and you need the skills to manual beatmatch anyways (like split hearing etc.) even if you do not manually beatmatch.
The whole discussion goes into a direction where DJs are defined by a few skills or tools, which bothers me.
It is like talking about sex and all you talk about is the lying down part without actually having any and with the fact that you do not actually need to lie down.

    did you try this:
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/ephox/StaticFiles/PUSA/Files/Pro%20DJ%20FW/Controllers/Tracktor%20Pro%202-Setting%20&%20File%20Import%20Guide%20.pdf

I do not have a ddj-t1 but it is almost the same procedure as importing custom settings on my S4 (tried some DJTT settings) and it worked flawlessly.

    Use something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-20-Inch-Line-Cable-iPhone/dp/B005DK08X6/ref=pd_sim_e_3
Get a small TRS to large converter and plug into one line of the PA mixer. Now it will be mono, but better than nothing.
Or you get a similar cable (or iPod line RCA cable) put 2 RCA to big TRS converters on it and put it into 2 input lines of the powermixer.

After only 2 days, that’s not too bad, huh? Problem comes with tracks with subtle or complex beats. They still frustrate me. There’s no “guiding thump” if you know what I mean. Any particular tips or tricks to conquer this?

That is pretty awesome. Very nice. I know people that take at least a month to get the basic beatmatch down.

Mixing to beats that are not “off the bat” compatible, is actually not very easy and every DJ has other tricks he uses.
The one I described above, with EQing out is one things.
You can also experiment with putting the second track in a loop, either at a breakdown spot – so you have no or less beat to worry about – or at a buildup that you can blend in.
You can also make a punch in mix, like many hip hop DJs like to do.
Then you can also experiment with effects like Echo/Delay and Reverb to mix up the beat and even double or half time the beat buildup for a blend.
These are just a few options, there are many more and all of the above can be combined also (I use EQing and Reverb/Delay a lot).
Take a straight Techno Song and maybe a Hip Hop that are roughly the same BPM from the start and try to experiment to blend over from the one style to the other in your practice sessions. This will soon lead to success.

Sadly: there is no best. Get the free guide from this page, decide which features matter most to you and then come back.

The three controllers you mentioned are like saying: What is best Apples, Oranges or Bananas?
Depends on your taste what is best.

Also did you even choose your DJ software yet? By the 3 controllers you mentioned, I guess not and you should do that first.

Ah you are trying to transition two tracks with different beat styles or different genres, like mix a dance track with an “oomph oomph” into a hip hop with a ” tsch tsch tsch oomph” …

Now that is a totally different beast. There are several different ways to do it, the thing I use most is “switching the bass drum”. This is really hard to explain without showing, but I try it like this:
Kill the bass on the track you want to bring in (I adjust the rest of the EQ also a tad, but that is experimenting) bring the new track in with the transition (sometimes a slight effect like echo/reverb can help cover your tracks). At the same time transition the bass by killing the bass on the running track and bringing in the bass of the new one and align the EQs to help the transition.
This is really lots of experimenting, but I hope you understand the basic is to switch the beat and of course only applies if you have 2 tracks that have a good bass beat, but different pattern. If you have totally different genres you might have to go to even more advanced stuff.

Sounds like the tracks are slightly out of phase. The key is then to nudge it slightly to bring them into phase.

Also if I am really lazy and do a shorter transition, I sometimes do not BPM match 100%, near to 100% is enough. You can simply keep nudging it slightly during the transition to cover the tiny bpm mismatch and you’re fine.

you cannot use a dj setup for a monitoring and mastering section of a live pa.
you can take whatever the dj you hire prefers and have to get a sound guy that only does the tone mix for your doughter, that is how real pros do it.
you can possibly incorporate your own pa mixer like a yamaha pro audio mixer with enough space to accomodate the in ear monitoring or go for a full digital setup.
but this is no topic that can easily be amswered and at least I ask money for such touring concepts…

I am sorry but I think they limit the mapping (which everyone uses as an excuse to the “oh I am so flexible”) to sell their equipment. Nobody in their right mind would buy an S4 over a VCI 400 if the VCI 400 had the same tight jogs and pitch faders. Which is not Vestax fault, as they do send high res midi and it works extremely well in Serato and VDJ.
Also what is so complicated in programming mappable remix decks in 2.5??? Again just a thing to sell their F1 and S4. The VCI 400, heck even a mixtrack pro could easily be mapped to get the best out of remix decks if that is all you want (not even starting to talk about things like launchpads and midi fighters).
But I am not complaining as Serato + Ableton blows away any flexibility Traktor has anyways and VDJ 8 will also give NI a run for their money (and also works with Ableton).

Do not get me wrong, this is a valid marketing choice by NI to sell their gear, it is just not what I prefer in a company that I give my hard earned money to. Not even with the price cut, as latest with V3 I would have to pay again, where as in VDJ I invest double the money to buy it once, but then have free updates for live (and if you count license fees from a controller same goes for Serato if you stick with that controller).

I totally agree with Stello, I just could not live without jogs. It is not about scratching, as I very seldom do it and am not really a good scratch DJ, but it is about nudging 🙂 as I am to lazy to alter beatgrids in a set and just manually nudge it right instead of using sync.

I could not agree more. You definitely need to have a music selection that is right for your audience, so playing dubstep in a country bar might be considered bad music even if it is the hottest new Skrillex remix that dubsteppers would love…. and this is a good thing, else we would all be like Getta and then I would hate myself 😛 (sorry we kinda have rolling Getta jokes atm here and this just had to go in here hehe)

thanks, I will follow how this develops as I think with Version 8 VDJ will really start to rock away and since I start to hate Traktor with a fiery passion, VDJ may be the way to go for the future. But as I am like 15 years Mac user, booting Windows feels like a sacrilege you know hehe 😉

I prefer to look at it this way:
Music is like a steak and mixing is like great spices on that steak.
Now if you have a stinky pile of meat, you can throw any excellent spice combination at it that you like, you never get a good steak.
However if you have an excellent piece of tasty right steak, even if you only have a little salt and pepper it will taste good and with the right spices you can make it taste even better.

thanks synthetic! I thought so. I think I heard someone at Musikmesse on the VDJ booth say, that they will overhaul the mac plugin support in VDJ 8, since you seem to have excellent knowledge of VDJ, do you think this may include VST support on the mac?

I think with the TM2 Serato is not such a compromise as opposed to the TM4 you have 2 decks on the TM2 and this is what DJ Intro does. Also scratching is really really good. You can easily nail the basics with Intro and later down the road in a few month time, we will know if Serato will have an upgrade or if you go VDJ.

I would not recommend Traktor, I really dislike NI for their poor implementation of high res midi and hid.

@ Synthetic: Which tweak do you mean to get full jog resolution? I am currently testing VDJ pro with the TM4 and VDJ really grows on me. Also which VST effects for VDJ Pro do you recommend? (Especially which EQ plugin, since I hate the EQ and it is the only thing that really puts me off) – also I use a Mac with Lion.
