People who can play an instrument and come up with their own melodies, chord progressions etc do need some kind of title for recognition. However, so to does the ability to use software or may an midi-controller like an instrument – I went to see Octave one the other week and they do play their equipment like instruments:

Then you also get producers like Deadmaus who cant play a keyboard he just enters notes into a step editor, but he managed to come up with strobe and the beginning of that is as good as any classical piece I’ve heard:

Then on the other hand how many guitar rock music is just made from simple chords – nirvana and beatles spring staight to mind.

72 hrs still seems too long, but i guess sit depends on your pc specs. Seems like you need to also adjust the power settings for your laptop to stop it sleeping.

You can change the settings in traktor so that it analyses files as you load it to a deck, which takes seconds too, rather than doing the collection as a whole. However, taking three weeks to analyse a collection is an exagertation, no? In the past I have just let it run when I’ve gone out for the night and I’ve come back its done. I dont understand why people, like my mates missus sit infront of a computer waiting for it to do something that will take time, like back ups, virus scans etc.

I too prefer traktor to ableton for DJ’ing as traktor is just more immediate and on the fly, where as ableton you have to spend more time on setting up. Also ableton seems to only work with wavs rather than mp3’s – any mp3 file you import it creates a wav copy without telling you – so effectively halfving your storage capacity. So, my decision is to stick with ableton for learning production. However big djs like hawtin use traktor and ableton together, often routing the output of traktor in ableton for effects.

That’s a common misconception, when I bought my MBP 13, I compared the specs carefully to other manufacturers and it not much more if not different. Why? Because mac’s use better components than the standard laptops. Consider that the memory in macs are usually of the fast DD3 types, then consider that the processors are usually of the more powerful intel variety, I’m not talking of comparing the ghz against ghz, but intel also code processor model numbers by how many instructions they can do in cycles or something like that so two 2.2 ghz processors are not necessarily the same. Then factor in that macs have LED backlit screens not standard lcd ones. Also factor in the keyboards are of much higher quality feel to use not like cheap ones on standard pc laptops, further mac keyboards are backlit so great for dj’ing in the dark. Then construction a MBP is made from one piece aluminium, which is not just aesthetically pleasing but a reassurance that your case will last and not crack. Even consider that macs have multi-touch trackpads that allow you to use gestures to be that bit more efficient – i find using normal trackpads annoying now. Then on top of that you get great value software from apple in for of iLife and since they opened the app store they have slashed prices of software. The operating system is more secure and stable, which means I dont need to run a virus checker, so I get more out of my processor than pc hogged down by norton or whatever else. It also means that my mac doesn’t slow down after a while like pcs do – I used a work pc laptop in my last job and each morning I started my pc i went to get a coffee and it would still be waiting to get set up. My mac allows me to be more productive straight away so saving time means saving money. So when you take ALL these things into comparison macs are not over-inflated price wise and stack up very favourably against premium pc laptops like Sony Viao’s
