I just loved seeing those TEAC/Revox Reel To Reel Decks he had there 🙂 :);
I never heard John Peel Actually DJ before he Died; just his Radio Show; it would have been Interesting to hear how he could DJ after All Those Years spent as a Pioneer of Music 😎I think John did a fabric cd, not heard it myself yet. Interestingly I stayed in the same hotel as John once – I got in the same elevator (no I didn’t follow him in he was already in there when it opened on my floor), I tried desperately to come up with something cool to say to him, but came to the conclusion there is nothing you could say without coming off looking lame, so I stayed shtum 🙁

ParticipantI’m also a big fan of Jeff Mills – I think I read/heard somewhere once that John Peel said he’d love to be able to DJ like Mils before he dies and be able to play guitar like someone who I’ve forgotten name of, I think John Squire.
Any way, heres a fav clip of Mills from his legendary set at Liquid Rooms Tokyo

Now if you’re a genious like me you have probably already figured out the solution, and its a simple one.Instead of bitchin” about how music is ‘losing dynamics’ and how ‘music is getting ruined,’ just raise this ‘digital maximum’ to like, 5dBs or something. That is the only smart solution.
-Dj.Mark the Shuffler
I’m not an expert on this but I thought anything over 0db in digital gets clipped so raising to 5db does nothing. In analogue chain you can go over 0db to over saturate the signal and give warmth at expense of distortion. Besides raising the limit is like building a new lane on a congested motorway only for more traffic to fill it up, with audio people will just go up to 5db, so you’re back where you started.
I think the easier way to deal with it is to turn on the autogain in traktor or the soundcheck in itunes 😉

Lol One of the best machines to run Windows 7 and Vista is actually a mac! 😀

I’d go for Welcome to Jamrock, it might be old now, but its big and does what it says on the can 😎

ParticipantThanks Emma, very true indeed, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each method and which one you might go for will depend on what you wish to achieve really. That is why I thought to share that blog post, as it neatly clarifies the different ways and gives a good summary of the adv/disadv of each method 🙂

Only tip I give is to try to arrange things so you have no “dead points”. That means you start mixing your next tune in at a point where when the currently playing tune “comes down” you have the other tune now building up. It’s tricky, but a good start is to always start mixing in the last 2 minutes of a song and go the full two minutes to blend. The point is so you don’t have points where the listener is being bored with listening to long intros/outros, waiting for the next tune to really pick up.
Another way to spot that point is usually just after the end of the last breakdown

Yes, in the day when they used assembly language rather than game creation engines, but heck I wont go back to assembly programming, you should see the look on kids faces when we teach them the fetch/execute cycle.

ParticipantI’ve copied loads of tracks of my mate in the past, but then this year I’ve deleted them all, why because my music collection should be mine that I’ve built up which reflects my taste and feeling. I want my sets to reflect me not a carbon copy of someone else. Also I found I literally didn’t have the time to go through all that I copied with the new stuff flooding me over.

ParticipantWhy would anyone want to see the same DJ several times in a row? I would not expect any DJ to have an entirely different headline set for each venue, customised a little perhaps but essentially the same stuff and so it would be pointless to see the same DJ play a different venue. Okay yes you would obviously have different tunes for mix cd’s, radio shows, a bar gig, festival ie things with different purposes in mind.
I think Phil you’ve made a good move. In the old days I spent time going to a record shop, trawling, saving so it meant I didn’t have much new stuff, so I had more time to listen to the old music. But now as you say spotify, last.fm, hype machine, i’m flooded. My next move is to get rid of 12″ which I can download or not bothered to keep. The real pain will be dealing with the LPs, that will take more time to let go, but I’m sure it will if one day I plan to move to DJ at my terrace bar in brasil 😉

ParticipantJem, post: 1071 wrote: Thanks for the replies. Sorry for being a numpty but just to clarify – when I import to itunes from my download folder, I can then ‘right click’ well, two finger click on my Macbook actually, and add details including artist name, song title, genre etc. is this what’s meant by metadata and if so how come I can add it to my imported files if they are still wav?
Those fields are metadata, but it is stored in iTunes library files, rather than within the WAV file itself, which as said the WAV format cannot store. However, MP3 files are structured so that you can store a lot of metadata within them (note as Itunes deals with a variety of formats not all of its fields are stored in MP3’s either).
This means if you copy the file to another device, like an personal audio player/Ipod whatever, the metadata stored in a MP3 file can be accessed by your device, so you can search by artist/track/album, but you can’t do this with WAV as the metadata stays with the itunes library (unless of course you have an iPod and do an iTunes sync).
If you dont intend on ever copying those WAVs to a personal audio player (one that isnt an ipod/iphone) then storing the metadata in the itunes library is non big deal, as for DJ’ing only purposes most DJ software can import itunes libraries, some much better than others. Contrary to advice above, I might be wrong, as far as I can tell itunes allows you to store much the same information about a WAV as it does an MP3. So you can still use the grouping and sorting fields to do smart playlists. However, if you use traktor those fields arent available if you access the the track from within its itunes folder playlists, also note that traktor has its own library which can store metadata too, but traktor doesn’t use smart playlists yet… but i’m going on here and best leave it as it makes me 😡 Though to finish, to find out whether something is MP3 or WAV, just right click on it, do the get info and the first tab should tell you the file format, you could also show the ‘Kind’ column in the library.
