That’s a pretty cool trick Phil.

I originally went to Mitch Craig for my drops, mainly because he was that classic voice you would hear all over the old WBMX and B96 mixes back in the late 80s and into the early 90s. Click here to listen to a demo reel from Mitch.

Most of the time though I’d simply record people saying lines I wrote and then coach them on how to say it. I’d love to get drops that sound like Leona Graham, that BBC Radio 1 voice. Only downer is she’s very expensive. 🙁

Hey Emma…do you sound like Leona?

Well, you actually could. Sometimes I’ll use others as my aggregators.

So let’s say Phil posts a link to an article he wrote or just liked, and I think it’s utterly cool…I’ll then post it on my social media. There’s no rule against it…but if you’re going to let’s say repost everything I post, make sure your fan following isn’t full of people who follow me. Or else they’ll call you a phony.

Even with Twitter, start by following people. Anyone you like. I know when someone follows me, I’ll look at their Twitter feed and see if they’re posting stuff I like. I’ll follow them back if they do.

I’m actually working on an article of this for the site.

What I can tell you is you need to ENGAGE people. That means you’re not just posting events, but you’re posting stuff they’re into. I try to post stuff all the time. Sometimes it’s links to new mixes I’ve done or new blog entries I’ve written. Other times it’ll be cool blog entries and articles that I think fit the whole DJ thing. I also post 2-min clips of tunes I think are cool on a tumblr blog and then post links to the individual entries on twitter and facebook. People get into it.

The reality is you need to be an aggregator of content. Constantly give stuff you find so people simply choose to follow you because you’re a convenient source of stuff. From there, you engage in conversation. Look at Deadmau5’s Facebook page and how he’ll post something that leads to much conversation.

    More to come.

Everyone has their own take, but I don’t see it as a “great evil” to give a friend some MP3s or trade with a few friends.

It’s when you sit there and make them all publicly available to download that there is a problem. Me giving a few tracks to a friend isn’t as bad compared to if I made my collection available over a P2P download network.

Well, that comes down to personal taste and preference.

Most of the time now, unless it’s a heavy black crowd or a true b-boy underground crowd…most people want popular rap music mixed with mashups and R&B. A former boss called it “chick-hop” because he really prioritized making women happy and wanted female-preferred music.

So it would be Beyonce, Rihanna, P Diddy, Kanye, Britney Spears, etc. I know really most of those aren’t “hip-hop” or even “rap”, but it was more about pop music in the rap music tempo.

Buy remix services…they fix up the tunes so they are better for DJs with intros and breaks.

Rap music now has to be one of the most “unfriendly to DJs” music now. No intros, breaks, etc…even when I hear guys playing it it seems like there’s no sense of flow. They’re just slamming in the next record when they see the crowd is getting bored…even if it’s in the middle of a verse.

Plus I don’t know about now…but back when it blew up bigger in the clubs (2003-2009) I noticed the crowds really didn’t care about the actual lyrics…but the “catchy hooks”. I still think if DJs remixed their tunes to be intro-catchy hook-repeat-outro they would rule the crowd.

I don’t have photos of it…but I remember playing at a big 3-day outdoor rave called the Caveman Experience.

I do have my set from it recorded.

Is Spotify an “on demand” service? Or more like Satellite Radio with shows?

My reluctance on streaming services or even the cloud is that I can’t trust internet connections to be solid and fast enough to cater to my needs. I have been tempted to get into satellite radio for the shows so I can hear what the bigger names are pumping.

I had to with that one. I mixed in to Altern-8 later in the mix, but it would have been a shame to let that intro go to waste.

Next one I’m simply beginning it with “Set You Free” by N-Trance…just another look back to those wild days.

Meh…that comes with the territory Architekt. She was a trixie in the way I described it. She thinks the world is all about her and thus thinks everyone should be at her beck and call.

Imagine if some idiot thinks of marrying her…she’ll be a total bridezilla.

Thanks. I feel bad that users of older versions of Internet Explorer are having trouble, but it is to push them to update their browser to at least IE 10. That site is my basic push to get people to update to browsers that support HTML5 and CSS3.

Right now it’s this mix I did of classic rave anthems.

I never ran into that problem.

Most of the time when I got angst from musicians, it’s because they didn’t consider electronic music as “real music” and were hardened rockers.

    I just ignore it all.

Never had an Amiga. I had a C64 back in the day, but I never used a computer in any sort of way for the DJ thing until Windows 2000. First attempt was to use ReBirth to add a track into a mix. Second was to record mixes.

I usually either approach the booth all psyched up to play stuff, or worried to death about what I’ll play and if this crowd is cool or if I’ll be facing a handful of trixies begging me to stop playing music and play crap instead.

I’ll have a drink or two before I go on, but simply just go into it to get it going, and go from there.
