Apple updates its OS each year to add new features and the fact each new OS is free is awesome. But its always best to stay one generation behind till the audio software catches up. I run Mavericks with Serato and never have a problem with it, but granted it was only officially supported in Serato recently. It seems software is not too much a problem with new OS X updates but watch out for audio hardware, that is where you might run into trouble.
I highly doubt an OS can cause a HD crash and I asked our Apple Genius and he says it is bogus and the local rep just does not want to fill out an RMA form to get you covered.
As for Mavericks, I waited till Serato said “green light” upgraded and never had a problem.
As long as you stick to the recommendations of your favoured DJ software vendor, you are usually very safe. Personally never had a problem with Serato, they seem to test pretty good before green lighting.
I recently upgraded my MBP to Maverick. I kept experiencing some problems I had with the previous version, so I totally re-installed the MBP. Now running a clean Maverick install. Both my ProTools 11 DAW and Mixvibes Cross 3.1 seem to be running stable.

So basically they just used the vasaline on me…meh
Cost me like 30 dolla for the installation of fresh Lion OS (makes note to learn to do it meself next time)
I think that unless you have the discs for an older than the current version of OS X, when you reinstall it your self, you automatically get the latest one (or the pre-installed one I believe, which is probably an older version than you want).
I actually thought the company wasn’t half bad either 😀
on topic: installing the latest is easy indeed. It’s when you want the prevous version that it becomes a challenge I think, unless you have discs for it.
