Hi Oskar and welcome to the forums.

First of all, thanks for stepping on a lot of readers toes by stating that DDJ-SB and Mixtrack Pro’s are not “serious DJ-gear”. I am guessing a fair number of our readers either own one of those currently, are contemplating the purchase of one as their first controller (no doubt influenced by both controllers being long time members of our “most suited beginner controllers-list”) or have upgraded from one of them after outgrowing them. 😐

Then you aggrevate things by stating you prefer a Behringer mixer to the mentioned controllers. Behringer not quite being “serious DJ-gear” (just my opinion though). Whatever you think of Behringer, it is budget gear from whatever angle you look at it. Personally I’d take the Numark or Pioneer controllers over any Behringer gear any day of the week. Again just my personal opinion. 🙂

Finally you compare the Behringer (99 euro) CMD PL-1 to the Denon (250 euro) pro level DN-SC2000, referring to both as “jogwheel-thingies”. 😀

That covers our rookie correction section LOL

    Serious answers.

NOX404 = analogue mixer with only one USB channel to play from one source on PC. Not suitable for DJ software.
VMX200USB = pretty much same answer
DJX900USB = analogue mixer with support for SOME DJ software. Has digital FX section which is rather superfluous if you want to use DJ Software (that also has FX and those FX can’t be controlled by the mixer)

First suggestion is for you to go and read the great article by my fellow moderator Terry_42 “The Single Skill You Need To Be A Real DJ” (here: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2015/01/one-skill-need-real-dj/). That will hopefully show you that it really isn’t about the gear, but about other things.

Next suggestion is to really consider your options. Some of the advantages of going modular are lost if you then toss a big semi-analogue mixer into the mix (pun intended). Those are often somewhat harder to configure, they are (imho) more the worst of two worlds than the best). So if you decide modular IS for you, go with the X1/Z1/F1 series by Traktor or the new Akai ASM/FSM series and keep everything modular in the same line.

Third suggestion is to reconsider your position on controllers and perhaps ask a few people on here (make a new post in the DJ Booth forum) what there motivation was to go for either a full modular setup, a controller setup or a mixed setup like you are suggesting.

There are many skills for you to learn as a beginning/aspiring DJ and 99% of them have nothing to do with gear. So please don’t be blinded by shiny knobs and flashing lights and/or the notion others might have about what is or isn’t professional gear as opposed to “shiny toys”.

Final word, Serato will only work with SUPPORTED gear. It will NOT work with any of the mentioned mixers nor with the CMD PL-1 (although they claim the latter works with Serato Scratch Live = old version of software on some websites).

Since you are starting, you don’t have a (preferred) workflow yet. Spend 50 more than you would on the cheaper Behringer mixers on a Mixtrack Pro 2 new or even less on a used one. Plug in USB, plug in speakers, plug in headphone, load up your DJ Software (Serato Intro for example = included) and off you go. Find out what your DJ style is like, discover your workflow and then revisit the question of portable versus controller. It’s the cheapest way (I guarantee you can still get some half-decent money if you sell a year-old Mixtrack Pro 2) to find it all out (even two traktor modules = no jogwheels! = 370 euro and akai = also no jogwheels! = 400 euro).

    Hope that helps some.

Yeah, see, what I’ve been thinking all along is that the reason that controllers like DDJ-SB are so cheap compared to modular set ups is because they’ve been heavily comprimised with and advertised as shiney chunks of jogwheels with spinning buttons attatched to them. But Fair enough, thank you for your help, I’ll get back to your guys when I have my first mixtape ready 😉
