MemberAs an aside, even tho the tunes are beatlocked, before hitting play on the new tune i still adjust the pitch faders to match bpm’s – just so that if there is some kind of disaster the slider and the software are matched and i can take over without drama.. Belts and braces 😉

Member^^^ I had a similar argument with a very famous vinyl DJ last month, after the gig we were handing out flyers for the next gig, when my mate slipped a flyer in to this guys record box after he huffily refused to take it… i then reverse pick pocketed him and slipped another flyer in to his jeans pocket.
We stood talking to another of the DJ’s who’d played this night, when the grumpy sod noticed.. Que this guys rant..Now those who have known me a long time will know i’m an inveterate piss-taker and if argued with ill give twice back, sarcastic to the point you’ll not even realise im taking the pee untill you stop and think about it..
“What the hell do i want this flyer for?”
Me: to come and see some real DJ’s….
He went ballistic! 😀
That started a ( good natured) argument between the 4 of us between mixing styles, when i ended the discussion with:
“Passion for music and music selection and timing beats mixing ability hands down “, the lads stopped in thier tracks and looked at me.I said, “take for example Boy George, there where nights when he couldn’t mix for toffee, but the night was always blinding because his passion & knowledge for the music he was playing allowed him to pull of the trainwrecks and beat clashes, the crowds adored it…”

MemberIve started to not even bother with Synch to be honest, i’ve mapped a button for each deck to toggle beatlock on and off, 90% of the time they are both on, hit play and the second tune tempo matches and locks the nearest transient automatically – most of the time its perfect especially if i have tapped out or corrected the grids, if not or its a dynamic tune i quickly get it back in synch on the jogs if its out of phase.
Only time i switch these off is if there is a deliberate switch in tempo needed.
Why bother with all this manual beat/ phase matching business?U31
MemberHope you dont mind i’ve stuck a link on the wifes facebook for a couple of the other Prog DJ’s i know
are you using two of the same track at the beginning to simulate an echo with the crossfader? that’s a nifty little trick.
one of my little old school tricksThat’s how it USED to be done before software effects became available…. OLDSKOOL!!

MemberI was thinking about this, and something almost floated back to the front of my memory.
Its a memory of a film and its very hazy so bear with meThere is a film about a man who played a string instrument, a poor man, the instrument has only 2 or so strings, has only ever had these 2 or so strings while in his possession, and people walking by listen to the most beautiful music imaginable coming from this man and his instrument and say imagine if he had all the strings.
The point of the film was that this guy was more then grateful for the 2 strings he did have.
Its not about wishing about what you should have, its about making the most about what you do haveU31

Folk are naturally lazy and will post a question before browsing or searching FAQ’sU31
MemberSo whats wrong with cheap gear and pirated software.
Any means necessary.A bit of a diversion in to musicians, but im sure a few DJ’s round here did this too..
The Happy Mondays STOLE all their gear! There was a superstore that sold absolutely everything, called SCAN in Walkden (the next town up towards Manchester from thier home town Little Hulton – they would walk to the Stocks pub and then the Red lion on their way to the City centre ) where a Tesco now stands. Its on the opposite side of the road to the Stocks pub.
It was notoriously easy to shoplift from, so they did. And made historyU31
MemberI mentioned elsewhere on this forum, in the late 80’s you played on what you had, (Or at least we did) Garrad turntables out of your bedroom with wooden sides, heavy old things, no pitch control, belt driven

It was sometime in the 90’s before better paid mates could save up and get Technics 1200 and a decent mixer.
We made do and mended.
Absolutely zero has changed today.Your facebook laptop, an evaluation copy of some dj software, tunes nicked off napster or some such site are the modern equivalent .If you have a passion you will find a way. Get creative.
Some folk progress and get better laptops, better controllers and thier own music rips, or stuff from quality music source websites. Some fall by the wayside.
Nothings different.U31
