It’s what we did BITD Haroon, a regular club had a resident DJ who knew how to work his regular crowd…
And yup, a certain selection of choons became that clubs / DJ’S Anthem

Ask yourself, especially those who have used vinyl, would you willingly get rid of your vinyl EP’s & 12″ or 7″s?
I tend to think the answer is “No” your main collection stays in the decks room at home and your playing out set goes in your record bag or box…

For me its a very similar principle, main bulk choons on an external drive, a very good selection of tunes of a style i would regularly play on a partition on the lappy, then my set selection for the night copied to a folder on the desktop

I’m not putting down Phil’s idea, i can see the merit of a smaller selection of choons that you would get to know every nuance of, and with these building sets of a certain flavour… its just sometimes i’m mixing a pre arranged set and something will pop in to my head and 9 times out of 10 i can search the partition and find it

Doesnt matter if i aint span it for 20 years id still keep it, i aint played anything off Propaganda’s 12345 or A Secret Wish for at least 5 years but i know one day ill have an urge to spin Dr Mabuse or some such.. And ill be able to find it

There are ACDC Ozzy and Led Zep albums on my external drive that aint been span since i ripped ’em too ..

    No no no.
Id keep everything on an external drive, nothing goes unless its rubbish and was downloaded in a fit of madness or corrupted.

Id agree with keeping the amount of tunes on the lappy manageable tho..

Yup.. I had a Vinyl junkie in my grill at the weekend over this :

I was using the Lenovo and the Numark omnicontrol.
I got the tired old “You just press a button and it mixes where is the fun”..
I didnt try and counter argue, i just smiled sweetly and carried on.

I did let him have qo after the set, i gave him half a chance and left smart play on, and tried to give him a few pointers – Id devised a set in a folder where all the tunes “fit” and were within 128 to 134 bpm so it was just like digging in a mates record bag- so the tunes all should have worked together
All he produced was train wreck after train wreck- even after i heard enough and hit my Beatlock shortcut for him. In the end i turned off everything and let him make a total fool of himself.

Odd really, as i’d be the first to admit that mixing vinyl is a far greater skill, so if you can mix that, a well set up digital systems should be a walk in the park – and at one point it was set up as the mythical “press a button and it mixes” –

Right at the end of the night the wife of one of the best (vinyl) DJ’s we play with asked for a go, a total newbie and her husband is about to teach her with the vinyl so this for her was from scratch.. A vague framework of an idea of what to do but no practice at all.
I talked her right through it showed her how to count the bars, and pointed at what eq needed to to be tweaked at what ever point and she pulled off 3 of the sweetest transitions in a row! everyone’s jaw dropped!
The difference was there was no preconception or arrogance and she was willing to listen and learn

I told her to let her hubby get her up to a point where she can hold her own on beatmatching the vinyl first, and ill take the gear over to their house for her to play with.

    Excellent!
The one tip i give everyone starting out is – Record Record Record…
Record everything and listen back to it : think how you could have done each transition drop or cut differently, stick to the same tracklist. Get your mix as perfect as you’d like it and then think up another set, and do the same..

Oh and get some headphones and teach yourself to use them.. even if its only for prelistening to cue points it will make a massive difference

The Synch button is evil and beatmatching by ear is fun argument doesent wash with me. Synch is another tool, and like all tools there is a right and wrong time to use a particular tool.

I gotta screw this mirror to the bathroom wall. The brace and bit is more fun then the hammer drill, i’ll use that. It takes four times longer and greater skill and patience to do the same job.
Hole drilled, do i whittle dowls out of softwood the old fashioned way, or do i use plastic rawlplugs designed specificly to do the job that hand whittled softwood once did?
Hmm now do i use the screwdriver in the toolbox or do i go downstairs for a breadknife?
We all know that driving screws with a breadknife requires far more skill then driving them with a #2 Slothead but hey, i’m a martyr to stupidity!

^^^ That argument doesn’t hold water, so why should the argument that using a synch button is cheating?
What is cool though is knowing how to perform the old fashioned fixes and get out of jail cards like knowing how to use a brace & bit or use a knife- or a coin for that matter when the job must be done, but the screwdriver and hammer drill breaks
So yeah, learn to beat match by ear, its a great tool to keep in the box, but never shy away from the correct tool to use at any given moment, whatever it is

Illnoize, what OS are you using? I always Dual boot laptops now, windows 7 for main duties and XP for DJ work, and ONLY dj work.

Id ditch Vista on general principle for being total pants… I once retrograded a Compaq presario to XP ( Just before the Beta release of 7) even though it was built specifically for Vista and Compaq provided no driver support for XP whatsoever… it was a nightmare getting it to run well but it was worth it

Sold / gave to freinds all my vinyl years ago, had a lot of it ripped with audicity for listening in the van or cars SD card stereo.
Started on VJD home as i had all these tracks lying around, i was really really pants so gave up and deleted it for a few month till i thought ” Right i can do this with vinyl so why not digitally”
Downloaded home VDJ again played about for a bit until it became fairly nailed on.
I then split the decks with 2 soundcards through an analogue mixer. Riiiiight now were getting somewhere! The Mixer meant i could monitor as i could with vinyl, and gave a hands on tactile confidence boost
Went through downloading the upgrades of Virtual DJ, tried and still have Traktor, but in truth i hate the “Locked” feeling that the Beatgrids and Synch give in Traktor
I mainly use Virtual DJ pro 7 now, Traktor is just there ’cause i’ve paid for it and i’m too stubborn to delete it
