MemberI got absolutely nothin’ left from the old days apart from about 30 or so vinyl 12″ … oh and a few videos on you tube from some of the warehouses, and Southport beach. Also theres a handful of fotos on facebook of the Easter Sunday walk up the highest hill round here everyone does – It was the day after we all did Back to Basics in Leeds so i cant understand why we are all wearing sun glasses
And a few good memories!U31
MemberAbout 1990 ish, with a long break from 98 till a couple of year back
As regards never maxing out gains, i had to jack in to one channel on the line side of a house mixer where others were on vinyl, and the levels on mine were uber low compared to the vinyl.. i wouldnt quite say maxed out but it took some creative tweaking of the house gains, my gains and master out on the omni to bring my set in seamlessly with the last guys 12″
Lol alex my hands are flat with fingers spread to get to the eq pots!
Edited for stoopidity!
U31
MemberLol, nope, my old analogue Numark had em on the top as does my Numark omnicontrol in fact they are directly above the eq pots on there, but if you can imagine i have devolped a style where i use my palms on the volume faders while im turning eq’s on each channel.. If i need a very sudden cut ill then flick the cross fader
Weird huh but old habits die hard!
U31
MemberSounds very similar to my style dan, other then you having your headroom on the gain knob rather then the vol slider ..
i suppose also when i’m, doing transitions i can be using all fingers on both hands tweaking eq’s on both channels while manipulating the volume sliders on each deck so for me using my method its two less knobs to try and reach to manipulate, as my method for headroom is already to hand .. its how i always done it and ive never knowingly clipped out yet!U31
MemberIts a vinylist forum, Emma… but there are a few starting out or actually using DVS on the Sly- and my mate who is on the Ableton course is also on there..
U31
MemberWhat genre are you mixing, and / or are you scratching on the volumes? I seen scratching done thay way one night when the cross fader pot started to bleed over one night on a house mixer 😉
U31
MemberAnd thats why i state there is no wrong or right, both our ways work 😉
U31
MemberIt’s only my opinion, bear in mind and everyone is different, no method being right or wrong only work and dont.
But
Hypothetically.Your mid transition, gains are up full because both tracks are quiet compared to the rest of the tunes in the set- and your vol faders are already up full, the bass is down on the incoming track and you just need to raise the level on the new track so that the mid shines through clearer… your turning the mid gain but it just needs that bit more… Where do ya go?
You cant bring down the vol on the old track, trust me on that, the level change is instantly noticeable..
I will just slide that fader towards the top, then ease it back down as i bring out the old track and the bass up on the new one..U31
MemberI disagree. I think its bad practice to tweak gains once set, unless a track is an absolute mile out on levels. That’s what the volume faders are for
U31
MemberSo there is always headroom to make a track louder in the mix on that particular channel, its just good practice from back in the vinyl days and something i still do with digital
Some tracks seem quieter then others (or louder) even after they have all been leveled with something like MP3 gain, and rather then be fiddling with gains ill just have my vol faders set at 3/4 and tweak up or down to get similar levels.
On old analogue mixers there even used to be a line marked about 3/4 way up..U31
MemberThis argument was raging on another forum, so i pointed people towards a link for a DJ Welly scratch mix done in Ableton (Paul Welding, a massive Oldskool name from when it all kicked off in the 80’s for DJing and Production – His Orcana EP still commands stupid prices on Discogs) i’m sure Paul’s a talentless pretender ?

MemberHow do you fake mixing skills? How do you fake any aspect of digital djing?
We all know you still need a good skillsets, sometimes a different skillset from an analogue dj, but its a skillset all the same.
I’m sorry but if the guy he saw had 4 decks running, them 4 tracks were all beatgridded. A skill, yeah?
We all know how far out auto beatgrids get it, he’d have to correct them manually.
And mixing?
I’m just starting on Ableton and i can see how properly warped tunes can transition with very little input, where as VDJ or traktor i have to really work them eq’s and faders to get the same results- but there are still times in Ableton when an EQ needs a fine tweak here and there..U31
MemberWell, its taking a while to warp or Beatgrid my tracks, one of the main reasons i didnt get on with Traktor over VDJ, with VDJ i can waveride / headphone cue a track and nudge it in beat in miliseconds, so why bother beat gridding?
But with Ableton i can actually see a means to an end to warping properly. Its very early days yet but i love it so far.

MemberYep, you can play 6 full tracks on all 6 decks, or more if you really want!
I know Virtual DJ gets some stick from the Pro’s but i absolutely love it
