First CDJ gig, connected the players to the wrong channels (A to B and B to A).. When I figured out what I did wrong me and the other two DJs couldn’t stop laughing for a few minutes..

And that’s why they gave us the Hamster switch on mixers: :p
Yeah we all must have done that one, and the Hamster has saved me from my own gormlessnes a few times once i worked out why the channel i want to bring in is going quiet

    Yeah VDJ stores Cue points
And what do you think DJ’s have been doing since Sir Jimmy Saville first played on 2 turntables back in 1948?
They took a box or bag of pre selected tunes for the set. Today we use the playlist…

    Fxn, your doin’ great!!!

You just need to practice those EQ’s on transitions… gentle gentle… try not to have both eqs for bass up at zero db at the same time… yet you have to be carefull not to let the bass wash out as bring in the new track..im carefully adjusting one down as the other comes up… sometimes you wang em over fast, other times slowly… experience will teach you that… and another glaring one one was one of the tracks transitioning in to Pjanoo, that ideally could have been cued in a couple of bars later on.. now the transition from My Love in to Conscindo was worthy of Sasha mate!!! Truly!
But all in all it was great, you’d easily have pulled that off and rocked a bar or club dancefloor

Keep it up, and my only advice would to be try this mix again again and again, recording every one… try and figure out a different way of getting in and out of the tracks each time you mix it again, and listen back each time and think about how it could have gone differently next time… Your 90% there dude!

Oh yeah if its Prog house yer like, yer talking to the prog master.. and at least 4 of my mates specialise in this genre too!
Feel free to have a look here http://www.mixcloud.com/U31/
most of my mixes are timestamped so the choon playing is illuminated.
If you have any questions, ask away, i only bite a little bit at first!

This is a skill or “Ear” that you either have or dont, i dont personally believe it can be taught.
    But…. Here goes!

Mixing on the fly for a crowd is easier, you get away with allsorts – believe me – Genre changes, off key, sometimes you can even trainwreck a mix and it still seems to work.
But mixing for a cloudcast or mixtape is a totally different prospect.

Here, i think of a few tunes im gonna work the set around or want to include and work forwards and backwards from there.
If you have your DJ software already put one of the tunes you like on one deck, write down on paper the name and artist.
And play it. Then select another in deck b and see if it works musically. dont bother mixing, thats for later. cut in an out between em. If it dont work put the new tune to one side find one that works, write it down.
keep that one playing in deck b and select another tune. do not discount the choon you rejected earlier, try it – it may work with this new tune. And so forth

Id say try this with 5 or so tunes and form a mix around this to begin with, it will give you a 20 to 30 minute set.
And from there, add more tunes as you get better, extend the mix.

As for finding tunes, how about good old youtube at first?
Find a nice Prog House tune you like and look at the side suggestions and try em, writing down the ones you like. Even taking note of the ones you don’t like if they will work rythmically and harmonically..

Sometimes the trainwrecks and the bouncing needles make the night, if the DJ handles it in the right way..

^^^^ Yup, i swiped Smitten’s script myself this morning for the Windows 7 desktop (Home build, my spec), that is powerful enough to run all my DJ and music apps whilst surfing , converting files , torrenting and god knows what else at the same time..
I cant say i noticed a difference on that beast but i am sure i will on the laptop..
It only seems to be on the laptops running 7 only where i have had issues with Traktor Virtual DJ and ASIO so i dual boot these now as a matter of course as soon as i buy a new one

Nope. Dont miss it at all, my memory has gone to rats and half the time when crate digging i couldnt remember what a choon was

Online i can pre listen before i buy.

Of course with crate digging and buying cheap 50p vinyl’s in bulk there was always the unexpected bonus of buying a gem you never knew the ID of until u got home and span it

But that still happens for me digitally with youtube and so forth

Absolutely, and i get loads of ideas from listening to other DJ’s mixes upped to the web, a tracklist makes tunes easy to find..
But having no tracklist doesn’t make things insurmountable

Stu Robinson’s Tracklist on his Cosmic boogie mix 10 made finding this gem easy

I think there is an old mindset from back in the day were other DJ’s kept their “Secret Weapons” and it still goes today

EasyBCD is a cracking tool for creating boot up menus, its pretty foolproof.. You can create multiple boot options, name drives, rename operating systems and loads more.. the rename operating system tool was handy, i have mine set as “Windows Seven” and under that for XP it reads “Traktor/ Virtual DJ”.. anyone who picks up my laptop can see at a glance which OS to boot in to on start up.
Oh yeah in the EasyBCD tools there is a little script that you can install which with one click of an icon next to the clock on your task bar, will instantly boot into the other operating system to what you are running at the time.
Great for surfing in 7 and with one click your in XP when its your turn to go up
    http://neosmart.net/blog/2011/easybcd-2-1-and-some-big-changes/

A mate in Bristol had problems in Traktor & wanted to run XP and 7, but he is totally computer illiterate. Phone calls and emails were leading to frustration.
I searched on line for an “Idiots” guide and this method proved to be the closest way to how i do it – they also used EasyBCD and provide a download link.
Print off the instruction or even have another computer handy so you can click on the links, and follow each step, its not as hard as it sounds!

After the first time you do this successfully you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about its like falling off a log

Cheers.. I should have a 12″ from back in the day landing on me doormat today that I know is gonna be rare- ish, although very very much heard of..

Frendzy – Cant stop, as it was totally misspelt AND miss-named on the compilation record on which it was popular..
It took a bit of detective work to find it..

Here is the version off the Deconstruction compilation album..
