Yeah, i get ya on that one, and there is something a little obscene about a roped off area with folk quaffing champagne segregated from the real folk providing the real atmosphere…
At least at the kinds of nights my friends promote, you will see those self same promoters and off duty DJ’s right in the heart of the dancefloor giving it as large as everyone else when they get a couple of moments off from the very hard work of running the night

Is this a good time to drop a link for the next night on the 22nd?
No VIP cordons or booths there, i promise ya 😉

If i aint on the guestlist i aint going – simple as – unless its a mates night or something VERY special.
Had a few of the DJ’s from the Northern Project ask me and the Mrs are we going to one of their nights, when were sitting in the Green Room after the recent cancer charity / Godfathers of House night in Liverpool
We live 1 mile exactly from the club they hire for these nights. Not a chance i’d pay over a couple quid to get in ANYWHERE, never mind there, when i can go in the pubs 100 yard down the road and watch a DJ play his heart out for free

I plan EVERY set unless i need to stand in and go over my alloted time, thats the only time ill wing it.
I know very few dj’s who just take a record bag and wing it on the night, but there are a few… and i hang out with a few well known (in the North of England at least) names

Modern house is fairly easy especially after 96 ish
The mellow house style championed by the hedkandi label/ brand is ridiculously unchallenging. drum machine rock steady 4/4 with breakdowns designed for mixing in / out of

I agree with Phil, most oldskool vinylists argue that laptop DJing is all about hit one button and it all happens automatically..
Playing out one night, there was myself, my mate who is learning ableton – who has done a few sets for his own amusement at my house with my midi and Virtual DJ/ Traktor, so he was fairly conversant and can more then hold his head above water, and 2 pure vinyl DJ’s
After my last set of the night, and getting dirty looks from one of the vinyl lads, i let him have a go, there was only us and our wifes present by this time so no pressure.

Gave him a quick rundown, – “its essentially set up like a pair of CDJ’s with the tune database on the laptop, i know you have used CDj’s before so its the same principle.”
The house mixer was a Numark so that closely resembled the Omnicontrol too apart from rotary knobs for cueing the phones instead of sliders so i quickly briefed him on that.

Trainwreck doesnt even cover it. I even turned on some of the auto features like smart play and beat lock so the software would line up the beats and bpms.
The tracks he was using was from my set playlist so all bpms were tapped out and beatgrids all correct. At that point it really should have been as simple as hit play at the correct Bar and bring in the tune with the mixer

This guy had just played a 2 hour vinyl set without dropping a beat. Even with Virtual DJ doing a lot of the work, mixing digitally every drop was terrible. Was he being obtuse for the sake of it or just plain thick, i really dont know, but there is at least 1 vinyl dj out there who knows that Digital does everything for you, really is a myth!
