Participant‘fully use’

ParticipantThat’s a great suggestion but research tells me that only the sound card will work in DJ Player and not the midi stuff because of a driver issue. Having that big of a piece of gear attached to my iPad that I couldn’t fly use would drive me crazy.
I should have said that my primary iOS program is DJ Player, followed by djay 2. I’m much more of a DJ Player used tho.

ParticipantSeems high. Cop a 2012 MBP and drop a OWC SSD and 16 gigs of ram into it. That’s what I did last year after using a nice Windows machine for years and I couldn’t be happier.

ParticipantI find that some gear asio drivers aren’t as good as others but the same gear plugged into my mac all behave the same with no lag. That’s the classic argument for mac’s with regard to audio production, they “just work”.

ParticipantThis stuff is pretty mature now. It’s all reliable.

ParticipantWell, there’s a learning curve when switching to Mac but you can pretty much treat it like a Windows machine. For instance, I never used iTunes to organize my tunes preferring to use folders and subfolders. You can still do that on a Mac. I organize my music on a Windows machine then sync the whole folder with my Mac using “free file sync”. The only hitch in a mixed OS household is that any Windows drive you want to write to from a Mac needs to be formatted in exFat so both operating systems can read and write to them. I use VDJ 8 and importing my profile was simple. Overall the switch is totally worth it and it’s easy – there are tons of online resources.

ParticipantI was a diehard Windows DJ. Get the MBP. I switched to a 2012 MBP last year and I was shocked at the difference. That was before I added more RAM and an SSD.

ParticipantThat’s a good idea. He could also look at that new little Korg Kaoss DJ.

ParticipantI’m gonna co-sign all of your requirements as they’re mine too. You could try a mixtrak edge with a, external sound card (as the onboard sound isn’t all that great).
DJ Tucker
ParticipantThat’s why sync is wack. Don’t use it and remap the button to do something more useful, like a vinyl, brake instead.

Participant$400 is so high that you can nearly buy anything if you play your cards right. I Would save $200 of that for the full version of what ever software you choose and look at what you can get for cheap to start out on. I’d say, grab a WeGO 1 or 2 and learn on it. I use Virtual DJ 8 and it’s awesome to me. The full version is expensive but you get free upgrades for life.

ParticipantNearly every nightclub I’ve walked into in the last several years here in Ohio keep the dj separated from the crowd in a booth, often elevated. I wouldn’t want to buy a dedicated and expensive controller when apple is so quick to change the shape of their iOS devices. Look at how the iPhone has changed drastically with each release. On the iPad side, the current iPad mini 3 is a monster that is way less expensive than the full-size iPad. With the smaller controllers, like the WeGO, you can use an iPhone 5 or 6 and skip the iPad altogether. I’ve done it. Djay is a basic program compared to VDJ Serato and Traktor and works the same on my iPad mini and my MBP. People should understand that most of America is a small market with small market clubs in every city and town once you leave Chicago, LA, Las Vegas, Miami and NYC. It doesn’t matter what you dj with as long as it sounds good and keeps people happy, unless you want to impress other djs. I know we all wish every gig was a Boiler Room-style event with the dj out front and adoring dancers all around but they aren’t. I’ve actually downsized my controller choice for most gigs from a pro Denon controller in a flight case all the way down to a WeGO and nobody noticed. I even did a gig last weekend with a Mixtrack Edge just to see if I could pull it off. I missed the touch sensitive jogs but other than that I had everything I needed to precue and drop on the 1.

ParticipantIf you haven’t bought it yet, I’d recommend a WeGO3 instead so you aren’t stuck with that dedicated slot size. An iOS controller like that, or better yet the Reloop Beatpad, would actually see you from the bedroom all the way to a club and serve you on both iOS devices and laptops. You grab one of those and a Spotify pro membership and you can pretty much dj like everyone else. Are you any good?

ParticipantThe manager is an idiot and thinks he knows how to DJ. There’s nothing you can do to satisfy him because he’s an idiot. If people dance to your sets don’t change anything for an idiot. Meanwhile, start looking at a way to pivot to another gig because, after all, you aren’t married to this guy with kids, mortgage, a dog and cat. Keep doing your thing somewhere else. This guy sounds like the worst. Or, if it’s a great gig or the money is good, ask him for suggestions as it’s his ego you need to stroke, it seems.
