ParticipantWhat kind of mic are you using?

ParticipantMy advice would be neither. Some things to consider…
~ Do you need CDs? You’re adding a lot of weight to any potential system if you insist on having CD drives in your hardware. I’d figure out a plan that involves ditching the CDs and making the most of this new portable gear you want to invest in.
~ Both of those units you’re looking at are rather dated in the feature sets they offer. If you’re taking the time and making the effort to switch over to Serato anyway, no reason to intentionally lock yourself out of all the bells and whistles. Even if you don’t think you’d use them, having them available at least gives you the option to experiment and play around a little.
~ Broadly speaking, if you are considering the modular route (media players, plus mixer, plus whatever else) it’s because you are trying to integrate something otherwise not available in all-in-ones, or are trying to insert a much higher quality component into your performance rig (think fancy-pants mixer or such). Or alternatively you could just be a crazy person like me who enjoys bringing ten thousand parts to every gig – but that’s a terrible plan. Don’t do what I do. I’m crazy.
So all that said, my advice would be to look at something like the Mixtrack Platinum or NVII. Or step it up and look at something like the Denon MC4000 or Pioneer SB2 or SR (depending on budget). All of those options would give you a serious portability advantage over the options you are considering, and would still deliver a pretty solid “2 decks and a mixer” feeling for you.
** Edit: Thinking about this a little more… Look at the Denon range of products. If you do a lot of mobile they really are hard to beat.

ParticipantMaxy – get off your Mac soapbox. Lots of PCs in the music industry too, and they’re working just fine thank you.
Dexter – ground hums can generally be traced back to bad cables or bad power. If you’ve swapped out cables and still have it, then try plugging the mixer and the PC into different circuits and see if you still have the hum. Ground hums can be a real pain to track down, and even a bigger pain to fix. Bars frequently run into this trouble when someone plugs a fridge into the same circuit that part of the sound system runs off of.

ParticipantI picked up a used Akai AMX last year, had problems getting it set up and stuffed it in a desk drawer and forgot I bought it.
Fast forward to last weekend, and I had a show that really didn’t require me bringing out my big setup, so I pulled this out and took the time to get it set up properly and was really impressed with how good it sounded. Very solid little unit, I’d recommend adding it to your list of considerations – plus it comes with a full Serato licence, which is almost unheard of at that price point.

ParticipantIf your booth monitors are getting bumped around to the point of cables falling out, you’ve got WAY bigger issues going down in your booth than whether or not audio gets cut to the monitors!
Get yourself a pair of 1/4 to 1/4 inch cables and use the booth outs as others have said. That’s the exact reason they are there for.

ParticipantStop trying to convince me to spend all my money! lol
I’ll fully admit that the first time I saw the mixer, unlike the players, I just wasn’t sold. I couldn’t tell you exactly why at the time, but something with it didn’t immediately click with me. But as I’ve seen more and more of it, it has started to grow on me. I suspect that will get stronger once I manage to see one in person.

ParticipantWell, I’m totally giddy now… haha And right there with you – as a long time Denon supporter, I’m really glad to see them not just back, but back in a big way. Bring on the gear wars!
I’m curious – did you try plugging in your own USB? How did the larger than normal Survivor sticks you use do in that front slot? Anything sticking out or did it all hide away nicely?
Alsom, a random question about the mixer – you mentioned somewhere that you used to own an X1600 and that’s what I have at the moment. Are the channel throws the same length on the new 1800? I always liked Denon’s longer faders vs. the DJMs (not to mention sound etc.) but the promo photos for these make it really hard to tell exactly what they’ve done. I mean obviously it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker or anything… Just a personal preference.
Thanks for the story. You’ve made me feel much better about my rare burst of impulsiveness!

ParticipantI look forward to it. I did something very uncharacteristic of my usually pragmatic approach to DJ equipment and ordered a pair of these sight unseen. I don’t know, something just immediately resonated with me – and the more I see the more they appear to check all the boxes of what I want in a workflow.
That said, now that I’ve been sitting around for a few weeks waiting for inventory to arrive, I’m starting to get antsy. lol

Participant@Ian – source file wasn’t lossy.

ParticipantI bought, downloaded, and converted something to mp3 a few weeks ago (all within iTunes) then moved the file over to my “iTunes-shall-never-ever-touch-this-machine” dj laptop. No issues.

ParticipantTotally off topic tech note for Vintage and the mod team:
I’ve notice over the past few months a few posts I’ve made with external links have disappeared into a black hole never to be seen again… I assumed it was some sort of overly aggressive anti-spam system, but if it’s doing it to you guys too, you might need to look into it.Todd Oddity
ParticipantWhen you first install v8, it reads your v7 database and automatically converts it. Note that after installation, both versions will be using separate databases and are not linked (so if you install 8, but then keep on using 7 for a few more months, none of the changes you make to tracks in 7 will be transferred over to 8).
Note: As always, good practice to back up your VirtualDJ folder before doing anything.

ParticipantTake your controller. Plug into what they have. Sounds like they have the space for it. DVS or Club Kit still require certain types of gear to be there, and it doesn’t sound like the promoter is really all that sure about what they have.

ParticipantLesson to be learned here: Check that equipment is supported by software you want to use BEFORE you buy equipment.

ParticipantCheck out some of the Fostex monitors – when I was shopping for new speakers a couple of years ago I was really shocked how these sounded for such little things.
