I use a external analog mixer “Samson MDR6” that I run the MC6000, a mini-laptop and a microphone through.
The mini-pc stands readdy with a mix if something goes to shit and it´s connected to spotify too.

Are you running the latest firmware? That was a problem in the original version, but it was fixed pretty quickly. You shouldn’t need to be resetting the Denon due to a software crash – and certainly not from resetting the PC.

Max D, a couple of points. Don’t drop the second URL. Your website is your most important marketing tool these days and therefore should be as prominent as possible. However, make it bigger on the back side so it really stands out, and then work it into the other information on your card front instead of just having in over your name like that.

Easiest way to do that is use a proper email address (ie. max@djmaxd.com) – it sounds far more professional than a Gmail account, and if you already have the website, setting up an email forwarder shouldn’t be a big deal.

Just my $.02.

Sometimes we forget that while it’s nice to think it’s all about the music, we offer a service to businesses. As such, while talent matters, marketing and promotion matter too (see note below). If you are new and trying to break in, a gimmick combined with a good set will certainly help make you memorable and re-bookable. You can play the best set in the world, but if you are an antisocial prick and refuse to talk to staff and guests they’ll take the guy with less talent and a funny hat first every time.

Ya, those things are hot. I’ve done a few shifts as a mascot and thought I was going to die.

*side note: I don’t mean marketing and promoting events, I mean marketing and promoting yourself to the people who making booking decisions and the guests who influence them.

Ah, but the original question was “is a mask a good way to build a brand,” not if a mask is more important than being a good dj. The reason it works is because it stands out in a crowd (it’s a very quick way to see who is in the booth at a club). You’d get the exact same effect if you were 7 feet tall and towered over everybody else in the bar. There are other ways to do it too – a banner behind the booth, special lighting or effects, or just poster the crap out of places.

We live in a visual society, and anything you can bring to a show that stimulates that visual element helps make you stand out a little more than the other guy who just shows up and plays.

But that’s all from a branding and marketing position. Obviously if you can’t actually put on a good show – sooner or later that comes back to bite you.

If you keep your music on an external drive, the VDJ database will also be on that drive so all your music data *should* transfer over seamlessly. The one big hitch is if your new computer tries to use a different drive letter than your old one (say F instead of E). If that does happen, you can go into the disk configuration utilities and force it to assign the same letter it used to, and then you’re back in business.

Enjoy the new machine!

“If people remember the mask over the music – the DJ has failed.”

As with all things marketing, it isn’t quite that simple. If the dj is remembered and gets more work out of it, then he has succeeded. I don’t like the look, and think it’s a gimmick that will run its course (hopefully), but I can totally see why it works and why people are doing it.

I use Sony MDR-V500’s and have been using similar models for the past 15 years (I think they’ve changed the model number along the way somewhere). Maybe not the best ones out there, but they work, aren’t too expensive, and fold up nicely for travel.

Gateway ID47 H03h – 2nd gen i5, 750 gb HD, 6 GB ram, 1 GB video all standard out of the box…

Favourite thing: 14″ screen in a 13″ case (best of both worlds)
Least favourite thing: silver keys with black lettering not always easiest to see in dark room (fixed with a USB gooseneck lamp), and USBs are towards the front which is a tad annoying.

Despite that, I love this machine.
