ParticipantI was toying with the idea of going, but couldn’t find much buzz about it, and being St. Patty’s weekend and all, booked a show instead. If I hear some good feedback I’ll probably check it out next year…

ParticipantWhat version of Virtual were you using? If you want to do video, karaoke, regular dj’ing and have access to pretty much any controller to boot, your best bet is probably going to be Virtual. It has all of these in one package. As for your computer, it sounds like you are way underspec’ed for doing anything with video which could be a big part of finding it glitchy (I’ve been using Virtual for about 2 years now without so much as a hiccup). More ram will probably help. A dedicated video card is also needed to properly handle video mixing.
FYI, Virtual is not buying PCDJ. They bought out the company that makes DJ Decks and that company used to make the coding for PCDJ.Todd Oddity
ParticipantOrdered! They arrive Thursday. Thanks for the help.

ParticipantThanks! Would you say the 2000 has about the same workflow as the MC6000? I love my 6000 but want a stronger mixer for the studio, and a 1600 with a pair of 2000’s seemed like they would do just that…

ParticipantLog into your account and update to the latest version, 7.0.5b. That may take care of your issue. Also make sure you have installed the latest drivers from Numark on your laptop.

ParticipantWhat version number and edition are you using (ie. 7 and Home)? Are you hooked up to a controller?

You’re thinking it is more complicated than it is. 🙂 You use your NS6 as you always would. The main out from the NS6 goes into a single channel on the club mixer. The only thing you do on the club mixer is set your volumes (and possibly control the booth monitor depending how things are wired).
It’s actually a very quick way to set up and do a show.Todd Oddity

I remember this moment perfectly and always will.
A little background:
A bunch of club dj’s used to meet at Denny’s after our Saturday shifts and compare notes about the night, what music worked, what the crowds were like, and to just generally make fun of each other’s clubs for being dirty dives full of skanky people… You know, typical dj trash-talk.
Most of these guys were also your typical “I am SO the man cause I’m a DJ” kinda guys – certainly no issues with self-confidence with this group. On the other hand, I tended to be a little less in your face about my nights. They were doing well and I didn’t feel compelled to brag. Because of this, I tended to get ragged on the most by the guys – because I’d just smile and take it…
Now for the actual story:
So we’re all sitting down having a meal and three ridiculously hot girls come over at sit at the table with the group. They knew one of the guys and came over to say hi. He proceeds to introduce the table to them, but instead of “this is Rob, and Colin, and Todd” he does the whole “this is D’Eros from Liquor Dome, and Lazz from The Other Side, and Oddity from…” That’s where they cut him off and turned to me. “Wait, you’re dj Oddity from On Tap?” I just smiled. “Oh my god, we love you so much – we come every week with all our friends and… blah, blah, blah…” Then went on like this for the next five minutes. The rest of the guys looked shell-shocked afterwards.
And that’s when it was official. They may have all talked the talk, but I was the king. And I just smiled and took it.Todd Oddity
ParticipantAn i5 is more than enough. An i3 should be too for that matter, especially if it is a second generation chip. Before you assume it is the processor I’d look at background software on your system…

ParticipantFolks, the moral of this story? A new club shift will be opening up in Atlanta!
I jest… 🙂Todd Oddity
ParticipantI’ll be blunt too. No matter how original you think you may be, there is probably somebody else in the world doing something similar. I used to have this mix I busted out at shows and it was pretty obscure – Beastie Boys and Tragically Hip (I forget the exact songs now). Then one night, I’m visiting friends on the other side of the country, and while we are at the bar I hear the dj do the exact same mix.
As Izn said, we’re playing other people’s music – which means if two tracks sound good together, you probably won’t be the only person to notice.
All of that to say, don’t download their mix and play it straight up, but if you are mixing and happen to do the same thing they did, no sweat. You still did the work yourself. And there is probably someone else out there already doing it too.
In short, go have fun and don’t worry so much! 🙂Todd Oddity
ParticipantSince moving to digital, it has helped with my spontaneity as I now load up the history from my last show at the venue and make sure I’m not repeating mixes. Beyond that, I rarely prepare sets in advance – although from what I read on sites such as this, I do get the sense that I may be in the minority with that.
As to what I pick next – it has to fit well with what is currently playing (be it a mix, a hard drop or whatever else I’m trying to pull off) and most of the time it will hopefully pump up the crowd more than the last track (unless I’m resetting, in which case it is something intentionally placed to recycle the floor a little).Todd Oddity
ParticipantI’m a Denon fan personally, but that deal on the S2 with software is just bananas. It really can’t be beat right now…

ParticipantGreetings fellow Canuk! I’m just up the 401 in Ottawa. This is a great site with lots of resources – enjoy!

If you are doing both club and mobile then something like the 3000 or 6000 may be a good fit for you. Rugged build so they will survive on the road, but a little more space on the control surface than rack mount units. I have the Denon 6000 and can’t say enough good things about it. As for the jogs, I use them all the time, but never to scratch – they serve more of a purpose than just that.
