You really don’t have to worry about it. In Canada venues are required to have a licence to have music played (SOCAN), and that extends to anyone performing in the venue. If they don’t have it, it is on them, not you.

When I was still playing off of CD’s, my general rule of thumb was to have a legitimate copy of any song that I may also have a remix of. In the event anyone gave me a hard time, I could pull out the original disc from a CD pool and it would be covered off. With most people having gone digital, it makes it even more grey. Until changes to copyright laws actually get passed and court tested, as long as you aren’t selling your mixes for profit, it is doubtful anyone is going to bother you.

With support for video, karaoke, and of course, just plain audio, (not to mention great compatibility with a variety of equipment) Virtual is pretty standard around here for mobile dj’s.

Isn’t mp4 normally a video format? LE won’t play videos, hence won’t read the files regardless of what you call them I suspect.

You can get a universal power adaptor and a USB cord at pretty much any electronics store, so no problem there. Software and manual are all available from the Denon website. It’s a little odd that the power cord is missing – make sure the unit isn’t hot as that might cause serious problems getting software and support.

Denon gear is built like a tank, and the 3000 uses mostly the same components as their higher end gear. Pioneer is also completely unreasonable in their pricing – I’m not a Pioneer hater and in fact I like a lot of the stuff they make, but I would never agree to pay the hyper-inflated prices they charge just for “the name”. In general, the technology they put in and the feature sets they use are available elsewhere for less, and often on a higher quality build.

More to your specific question – the 3000 isn’t tied to bus power and has better options in the event of a PC failure. And of course, the Ergo has those damn lights… lol

Slightly off topic, but I used to work in an unusual club where this was the format. We weren’t allowed to stay in the same genre for more than 2 tracks at a time. It was difficult to put a night together and have it all sound smooth and coherent, but it also kept me on my toes and forced me to think outside the box. In a way, I kind of miss that sometimes with everything I play now having such obvious intros, outros and breaks…

Going on memory here as it has been awhile since I busted out CD’s as part of a show, but I found it to be the same on the units I played on (the 100’s vs. 1000mk1/mk2’s). The sound quality was fine, but it caused a little bit of speed wobble that required very minor corrections during longer mixes – nothing that should scare someone away from using it. Can’t comment on newer units as I haven’t used them.

If you are having problems with the SC2000’s, then don’t bother with the MC6000. I have both, and have never had the problems you describe, but overall the controls on the 6000 are a little tighter, so ya, skip it if you find the 2000 cramped.

That said, you really need to put your hands on a 400 then, because I don’t find the layout to have that much more space. Ditto for the S4 (slightly bigger buttons yes, but not a lot of space between them).

With the problems you are describing you should probably look at a modular solution, as most all-in-one gear is going to have tighter workflow.

As a side note, you don’t have to worry about wearing out the buttons on one controller over another. Almost every mid to pro manufacturer uses a similar type of micro-switch under the buttons, and they are dirt cheap to replace.

Actually, all Pioneers from the lowly 100’s up have Master Tempo. It was one of the features that helped set them apart from the competition when they first broke into the dj market. Most mid to high end CD decks would have similar features now regardless of builder.

I can’t say I’ve had problems getting work due to age – in fact it means I have more connections and they are more likely to have actually heard me play. The real problem for me is the scene is in a bit of a weird state here lately and there just isn’t a lot of work to be had. Hopefully with summer arriving we’ll see some new venues open up and stir things up a little.

    Exactly this.

In my opinion, it’s all about recognising what you can get away with on any given night. Some nights you can stir things up a little more and the crowd will eat it up, other nights they aren’t as energetic and you end up having to play it safer.

I agree that I hate letting entire songs play out – I get very jittery about half way through, and pull-my-skin-off nuts by two-thirds of the way, but sometimes I get a lame crowd who aren’t even cool with remixes, and then it’s just best to ride out the tracks and wait for the end to come.

Agreed, I don’t see Denon entering the low-spec market – it doesn’t fit their overall positioning as a company. More likely I suspect one of two things:

    – they over-built the unit and have too much inventory sitting around,

    – or, the one I hope is the case, they recognise the importance of brand loyalty in this business and are trying to bring in the next generation (versus the NI and Numark catalogue).

After watching their CD units go from total dominance to relative obscurity in the club market, it would warm my heart to think they learned their lesson and will be a little more aggressive about holding their own in the controller market.

I would think you would want to find some of the smallest gear you can get your hands on (that still does what you need from it).

Also, be aware of the potential of travel restrictions. A buddy of mine was heading south and had left some dj gear in the trunk of his car. He got turned back at the US border because they thought he might be coming into the country to work. Working while travelling can land you in all kinds of trouble if you don’t have the right permits etc…

You’re right, because this is the start of such a friendly and polite discussion.

So again, just to be clear what I was talking about, you stated “but 99.5% of the times there is always a mixer in the club” and “where do you use an S4 that doesnt already have an existing mixer”. I replied to those comments, and just those comments, and gave some examples. Then you started after me for something Joon said about CDJ’s. My point was, and continues to be that we as dj’s can’t count on a mixer (or at least not a good one) in every booth we set up in so make sure we know what we are setting up with and have equipment to match.

Again, if you are going to lecture people on “reading the entire post before u quote” you should do the same.

I’m not following your line of thinking at all here…

Where are you getting the idea that because my controller has a standalone mixer I am also sporting two CDJ’s with me? I keep the mixer hooked up to an mp3 player in the event of emergencies, and because the controller runs independently of the computer and software, I can reboot or whatever is necessary while music continues and then mix back in without the controller itself having to reset.
