If you mean the tempo seems to freeze on the same track you previously adjusted, can’t say I’ve ever had that happen. Maybe an odd setting in the software somewhere? Or your USB ports freezing up?

If you mean after loading a new track it seems to lock – that is a software setting – and one I turned off as it annoyed me when I switched over to digital. Basically whatever pitch the song is locks in until the slider is moved back to the zero position, and then it kicks in again. Like I said, turned it off and haven’t looked back. Everything reacts as I would expect now…

Slightly off topic, but does anyone have a good example of a “club contract” they could share? I’m in the process of updating all my paperwork and could use a little inspiration…

Keep in mind if you are using Virtual at work and something else on your own system you’ll be setting all the cue points and jazz for your tracks twice (may or may not be an issue for you).

I started on CD’s with a 2000 mk I and was always comfortable with the dual deck format of player, so for many years a 2000 mk I, then mk III and finally a 2600 were my standard gear. As Pioneer started taking over (around here it was 100’s showing up, not 1000’s) I learned how to play on them (which, as a side note, took all of 5 minutes – I don’t get why people get so worked up when they have to play on something different) in case I didn’t feel like lugging my own crap around, but when shopping I kept on buying Denon for myself.

On the turntable front, I put TTX’s into my studio and loved them. No regrets, never looked at switching to Techs. I still have those TTX’s and a pair of Denon 3000’s, although they are now in storage as I’ve moved totally into digital. Wouldn’t look back on that decision either! (Although the 2900’s are really making me rethink that logic…)

Also, and this isn’t meant to scare you, but be prepared that “play whatever you want” actually means “keep on playing what you were playing at the start of the night”. Basically, really stock up on your top 40 so you have lots to fall back on if it isn’t working out quite as expected. Good luck!

Ditto. I have absolutely no need for CD players these days – yet I find myself really wanting something like this.

Must. Resist. The. Urge. To. Spend. All. My. Money.

As Vinny said – radio mixes generally have very short intros out outros. Biggest thing is radio mixes will always be heavily censored for language, to the point it is sometimes almost a different song (best example still is BEP’s “Let’s Get Retarded” becoming “Let’s Get It Started”). Unless you are playing to minors, or are working in an environment that demands censorship, I would recommend avoiding the radio cuts.

I had a couple like that once – sold the show to another company and walked away. Take comfort in the fact it probably would have been a ridiculous pain in the ass dealing with her anyway.

    1) Love it! 2) You don’t have anything to worry about. Subway has better things to do than go after a bar that could make a fair use/parody claim anyway. 3) Jaggerbombs! Glug, glug, glug…

I was wondering why I couldn’t get any respect as a dj! Now I know it’s because my headphones have said Sony on them for the past 19 years. Thanks for helping me out with that – now I’ll finally be a real dj!

One lesson dj’s need to learn is that taking requests doesn’t mean playing the song next – and it doesn’t mean you’ll play the song it all, it simply means you allow people to ask you for stuff – and as you already noted, that is a great way to get yourself known to a crowd. I always take requests with a big smile, and chat up the person a little. But I never flat out give a yes or a no, I just say “I’ll try and squeeze that into the mix for you” or something like that and 99% of the time they are happy.

Of course there are those who will push the issue – just be friendly but firm with them. And for the very rare person who gets aggressive, immediately have them kicked out – no reason to ever put up with that nonsense, and they aren’t the kind of person you want in your club anyway.

Not quite the same thing, but I’ve had live bands play off me… Some of the more interesting bands I work with will play off the last song of my set – so I fade out, and they just continue the song for a minute or so and then cut back to whatever they were planning to play.

I’ve also worked with drummers, who set up in a corner of a dance floor and play along to the mix.

But I’ve never been part of a band – does look like it would be fun though…

I can unequivocally say I do not miss one single thing about working on CDJ’s. I find the workflow from the decks I used to use, to the controllers I use now to be similar, but with software I can cue up the next track quicker without having to fumble around remembering what binder I kept the disc in and hoping it won’t skip.

Well, it isn’t exactly standard issue, but there is a hack to make a Denon MC6000 work with SSL, and it already has excellent mappings for Virtual and Traktor. You may want to look into that to see if you can make it fit all your needs.

And if space isn’t an issue, the 3900’s Chris mentioned are ridiculous. They make me drool every time I see a new video…
