ParticipantI went through this exact exercise last year – looked at all of the models you mentioned and quite a few others. Ended up with the JBLs. Excellent accuracy (slightly favours the warm end of the spectrum in my space), but a larger sweet spot than typical monitors, making them good for running in the background when I’m working on other projects.
The thing about monitors is a lot of it will be personal taste, so keep on listening to the different models. Pick a song you know well and listen to the same part on all the options and you’ll quickly start to notice differences. Turn the sound off and listen for any hum (Tannoys are notorious for this).
Remember – if you are happy with what you select, then you chose right! With monitors there is no “wrong” choice.

ParticipantIt’s okay, I forgive you. But next time (insert evil laugh here) I’ll burn your house down. 😉

ParticipantYou’re right Chuck! And on that subject – why would I expect my car to drive in a straight line when it has a perfectly good steering wheel for manual adjustments!
Quit being sanctimonious – I’ve been doing this for 20 years now, and it has nothing to do with how much I want to play with the jogs while mixing – I can mix on any piece of equipment tossed down in front of me. It has everything to do with wanting my expensive new gear to do what it is advertised to do. I think expecting any less from it would be just ridiculous.
Just mho of course.

ParticipantInteresting. I’m running Virtual but the unit came with a free copy of Serato DJ – I’ll install that and see if it runs a little smoother over there. Been meaning to kick the tires on DJ anyway – see if it might be time for a switch.

ParticipantSorry to dig out an old thread, but Terry, you mention the VCI-400 has high resolution faders? Where did you find that info, because I’m having a horrible time getting my unit set up with any kind of accuracy off the pitch faders.
At 10% the steps are sometimes as large as .2% (ex. jumping from 127.98 bmp directly to 128.03) which is making manual matching a tad more work than I’d like it to be!
It’s driving me nuts and I’d like to get my new piece of kit out to a show!

ParticipantAs a general rule I always take requests (taking them and playing them are not the same thing) – great way to get to know your crowd and build a little loyalty by developing regulars.
But as others stated above, I play them when they fit the night, and if the person is being rude about it I stop listening.

That is entirely a personal decision based on what you want to spend and what you want to do with it. Some features to look for: good vu’s on each channel (I miss this most when I’m using my all-in-one unit), good soundcard that is compatible with your software of choice (unless you want to go really modular and have this separate too), effects that are useful to you (it doesn’t matter how many effects a mixer has if you won’t use any of them).
Basically, you need to get your hands on different models and see what you like the feel of. I personally have a Denon X1600 in my modular setup and love it – but it might not be at all useful to you.
Good luck with your search!

ParticipantIf you are going to go modular, I’d suggest getting a hardware mixer, as that really is one of the main advantages of modular.

ParticipantMaybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I really don’t see clubs that already stock 2000’s rushing out to replace them with these.

Anything – so it’s a great way to backfill your collection if needed. Be aware that they only leave tracks on for so long though, they aren’t an archive (8 months to a year or so seems to be the average).

ParticipantThe DJ City record pool is a great source for remixes and not overly expensive.
Todd Oddity
ParticipantYou’re probably getting the radio edits. If it’s a popular top 40 track, there will be tonnes of remixes all with longer intros, breaks, and outros available.

Don’t ever apologise for your preferences in music. If someone made it, and someone else recorded it, and yet someone else distributed it, then obviously at least three other people thought it was good too!
To be totally blunt, there have been a few threads with music hate lately, and I’ve been biting my tongue, but it really pisses me off that even in a community such as this, where everyone complains about feeling persecuted for their choices in equipment (just look up all the threads about why don’t people take me seriously without a pair of CDJ’s) they then turn around and crap all over top 40 dj’s as no talent hacks and whatnot. Basically, they do exactly what they complain about others doing to them – just over music instead of equipment. I’ve been spinning mainstream music for close to 20 years, made very good coin doing it, had a lot of fun, and yet still have talents and skills to compete head to head with anybody on this forum who thinks they are “all that”.
Anyway, that’s the end of my tangent.
And more to your actual question – your plan is excellent. Have at it!

ParticipantNot even remotely similar setups to compare… Do you want to spend $800 or $5000?
