It’s been awhile since I’ve seen an NS6 in the wild, but if I remember correctly, it was a bit of a big fella… That would put the Pioneer SX and SX2 into the similar size category. A used SX would probably fall inside your price range. If you are comfortable with Numark gear and want to stay with it, I think the NV is probably closest to the NS6, although more compact, and without the standalone mixer functions.

There are probably some Reloop models you should look at too, but I’m not as familiar with their catalogue – other than being totally in love with the pair of Neons I own!

S4 mk II and a pair of F1s and BOOM – you have pretty much everything you had on the S8 minus the screens. Easy breezy! 🙂

“Im an sx2 owner and love it, its future proof, it has everything youll need for the next 10 years atleast! however…”

Careful there Dom – keep in mind 10 years ago the CDJ1000 was JUST finally starting to get traction in DJ booths, still a lot of “you aren’t a real DJ unless you spin vinyl” because CD’s were for cheaters, and the big new feature in technology was that you might be able to see the song title on the display of that new-shiny CD deck.

Ten years is a LONG, LONG time in technology. Be happy if you get three or four years out of a controller. You have no idea what DJing will even look like in a decade.

Take it from an old fart like me. 😉

Side-note: It still totally amazes me how wildly DJing evolved in that window from about 2002 to 2012. It was crazy.

NYE is the one day of the year where DJs are in high demand. Every crappy restaurant and the ally behind it wants a DJ that night. So there is room for someone still breaking in to get a foot in the door.

As for fees, I use a totally ridiculous formula: I figure out what I would have spent going out, double that amount, and that’s my ask. If I can get it, fantastic! If I can’t, screw it, I’m going out.

iTunes has been a bit of a mess lately. Lots of problems for DJs. I avoid using it so I can’t really help, other than to point you to the forums. Some people seem to have developed work-arounds.

After the lights come up I gossip with the staff a little (helps keep a finger on the local scene), pick up a tea at the local coffee shop, then head home with SirusXM-Chill playing (helps to wind down a little). When I get home I watch the news for a bit and normally fall asleep on the sofa. Wake up at some point and actually go to bed.

There used to be a late night meal in the routine as well, but I’ve worked dinner into most of my contracts now so I get well fed before my set starts, though I do miss going for late night Pho with all the other DJs to gossip about how our nights went.

Nothing you are describing sounds like an issue… Depending where you are playing your samples and such from (it sounds like you might be playing them off a deck instead of from the sampler from your description), then load them onto the third or fourth deck instead of one or two. That way you can load up the track you are sampling from and the next song you want to mix from at the same time.

On some sets where I’m burning through a pile of tracks quickly, I’ll only be leaving each track on for 20 to 40 seconds. I keep a few songs for the set open in my library, as soon as I’ve mixed out of the last track load up the next one, adjust speed, adjust levels, hit play and bring it up. As you get more practice, you should be able to do that in a matter of seconds. It’s just about knowing your music well and knowing what direction you’re taking the set in.

Keep it up – the creativity comes from feeling confident with the tracks you are picking.

I’ll chime in on the other side of the debate – I’m very much a fan of modular. Allows you to tailor what you bring to a show based on what is already there. If you have a show where you need to bring everything out, yes, there will be more wires, but if they already have a mixer, your setup just got lighter. Mixer and CDJs? Now just just need some extra buttons for the features… That extra flexibility can also be an advantage if setting up around other DJs in a tight space.

I did four years with all-in-ones, and it worked, but now I’m back to a hardware mixer with a whole bunch of tidbits surrounding it. I couldn’t be happier with my little Frankenstein’ed creation.

But of course as with all things DJ’ing these days, it all comes down to whatever workflow you are comfortable with.

Your processor is below the minimum specs for Virtual and Traktor, but just scrapes by for Serato. That said, you might be okay – but could run into unexpected problems due to overloading the system.

^ Sadly won’t happen. It’s in their interest to make it as difficult as possible to switch software. However better import tools will at least make it easier to convert databases so we should get some help.

The ability to use multiple sound configurations is much improved in version 8. You may want to consider making the upgrade – I think you meet the minimum specs (although make sure to double check that). In 8 you’d get both setups saved just the way you like them and then switch between them with a drop down menu. Much easier.

You are correct – Mixcloud is not for single tracks, it is for mixes. Additionally there is a minimum length for mixes (I forget what it is right now, but I want to say 6 or 7 tracks). If you are based in the US or want people in the US to be able to listen there are a few additional limitations regarding the number of tracks by the same artist that can be in a mix.

If you’re getting a crackle sound it normally means you latency is still a little too low or the computer is struggling. What are the specs on your computer?

Super slow but the cue is now working, or super slow and the cue still isn’t working?
