The full version of VirtualDJ is IMHO very underrated by many so called Pros and it is a big leap from the LE version.

Having DJed a long time with CDJs and Vinyl and now going Digital, I have to say: Skip the CDJ.
Yes some “oldschoolers” might look badly at you or smth, but if you do it right a full set of CDJs etc. will cost you a fortune without having any advantages (I know I will get flamed for this, but I have DJed with CDJs for years and this is my personal opinion).

If you want to be secure with your digital setup:
Get a laptop stand that is high enough and stands rock solid. Nothing can be spilled on your gear this way. Get a controller stand if you think they might also wet your controller.
In case your harddrive goes south just invest in an 80bucks external HD and make that bootable. Any Macbook and most Wintel Books will boot from external drives.
Here you are with an investment of about 200 bucks your digitaly safe and do not need to invest heavily into CDJs and mixers, plus effects pads etc. etc. etc. Money you can save for a better laptop, better controller or, god forbid, music.

I love having all my music with me. While I usually prepare set lists/crates that I usually stick to, sometimes you see the crowd react to a tune and you just feel “the next song needs to be this track…” and with digital you just have that with you, for sure.
Also I love to be able to take my equipment everywhere and that I do not have to invest 10k bucks into it, like in the old days. Plus the possibilities with easy samples, auto loops and much easier effects are also way cool. Never again get to a venue where some duche bar owner hooked up 2 excellent CDJs to a sad old mixer with tin can EQs…
Also never again to carry crates full of CDs or bags and bags of vinyl around is really nice on my back.

I cannot wait for a review on the terminal mix controllers. As I found out for myself that I am more the Serato guy I am holding my purchase until they drop on the market.
I hope Phil, you get one soon into your hands, really looking forward to your opinion on them.

I tried both and the DJ3ME is WORLDS better hands down. I would have bought the DJ3ME myself, if I liked Traktor any better, but I cannot adjust myself to use traktor… guess I am more of a serato person…
If you can shelf out the extra money definately go for the newer product.

I cannot agree more with Phil and Youssef. Hell even me 10 years ago was better than me today… sad truth, not playing for years takes you out of the game and I have to get back on the horse slowly.
The process should never end and you should always look to improve.

But also keep in mind: An audience will hear when you have love and passion for music and put that love and passion to work. And they will appreciate that fact, even if you jingle songs on iTunes.
However you can be the technical perfect scratch DJ and beat juggler, when you do not love what you do, you will fall out of thin air…

Do you guys buy single tracks in iTunes or beatport, albums or compilations?

I kinda dig good compilations, but it is really tiresome to dig through them on itunes as there are so many bad ones (mostly those with 50 tracks on them) that have maybe 2 good songs and the rest is real crap. But there are a few really good ones that are really more bang for the buck than buying single tracks.

Any chance you guys can point out some interesting compilations you heard.
I am looking especially in typical EDM, House, Chill-House, Chillout (or typical Lounge music) up to hip-hop and electro. So i have a really wide range. Maybe there are some “typical” compilations that most get. I know from the scene I come from (Industrial, EBM) there were some typicals like machine music, electronic for the masses etc. that every DJ bought (or got the promo mailed…)

Not that I know of. As the mac feeds only bitdata through the USB to the mixtrack and cannot control its volume, I cannot imagine that it can work.
Same thing on windows btw. checked in my bootcamp install.

A while back when I was much more attracktive than today 🙂
Waitress came in the booth to bring me my water (yeah I am one of those sober DJs) and she was a real hot one and yay she started talking me up… about a minute and a half later… SILENCE… think I forgot something here… snatched the mic quickly, shouted something retarded and hit the next song in… thankfully the audience was drunk enough that the party continued, but man I was more red than the red light effect…

Hmm diagnostic from afar is not easy, I would suspect that something in the chain is not configured correctly.
I would simply take one end of the chain like start from headphones and then move through the chain and check if everything from controller, to DJ software to OS X to USB if everything is correctly setup. Also try a reboot with the mixtrack disconnected and plug it in after OS X has loaded and you are logged in.

On rare occasions there is a bug where OS X fails to initialize the audio, if this is the case check with your headphones if you still have sound output on the built in headphone jack as opposed to the mixtrack when you have set the output in your DJ software to the mixtrack.
If this is the case try the following procedure:
    – disconnect all your devices from your macbook (mixtrack, mouse, keyboard)
    – shutdown OS X and leave the macbook turned off for at least 30 seconds
    – make sure your macbook is plugged into power-adapter
    – on the left side of the built in keyboard press: Shift-Control-Option and press the power button -> HOLD ALL BUTTONS FOR AT LEAST 15 SECONDS!!! The LED indicator on your power adapter might flash shortly, this is normal
    – release all buttons at the same time
    – boot your machine and plug in your periphery AFTER OS X has loaded normally AND you are logged in

this procedure will reset your SMC settings in case you had a mismatch during location of the sound device.

I took singing lessons when I was young and am a pretty good singer. Was frontman of a band for about 10 years as a side project to my DJing.
I play guitar pretty well, not a “shred guitarist” with mad solos, but I can dish out some pretty good solo action and was playing guitar in the band too, but as “second guitarist” (and to make my singing look cooler hehe)

I also play to some degree (from best to worst): Drums and Percussions, Bass, Banjo (don’t ask) and “Maultrommel”
I can find my way around a keyboard/synth, but I could never perform live on it, I just use my knowledge in harmony to key in stuff via a midi keyboard into reason or logic.

This is as old as it gets. Many live bands have many parts of their concerts coming from playback etc.
I could not care less if Guetta is a good DJ can do badass scratch routines and whatnot… he got famous with songs, he fills stadiums etc. that is what counts for the record companies and his agency. He definately made some right choices in how to promote himself and has excellent marketing working for him.
Also performing a pre-recorded mix is possibly just so that nothing can go wrong… it may not even be his choice, but he may be forced to use a playback by his agency… you (and I) will never know.

Becoming famous has nothing to do with skill. It is 90% luck, having the right profile, with a tune that fits what the record company is looking for and being in the right place at the right time, with a company willing to spend millions in promoting you. You prolly get rich faster entering the lottery, than with DJing, then you can easily give away for free 400,000 of your own singles and have a #1 hit in the US like Madonna…

I have no idea about the mixtrack as I do not know it, but the MacOS part:
This is just MacOS way to tell you that you have no output controls in software, so MacOS cannot control things like Volume/Pan etc. via its Preferences and you have to do it manually on the device. So it will only feed your device with the audio signal/stream and not try to do anything else (e.g. sending Volume info).
So the sound on your mixtrack should work if you use the volume controls/faders on the mixtrack, but MacOS wont be able to display the volume you use on screen in the preferences. (Your DJ software might be able to, as it gets the feedback via MIDI which MacOS does not).

So this is totally normal and not really an error message. (Happens also on most teleconference boxes you hook up via USB and most DJ controllers.)

I hope that is clear for you and I did not confuse you more hehe
