KeymasterThere are a lot of combo packages with 4 cans and a stand for around 200 bucks, get 2 of these for basic lighting.
With the leftover budget you could probably get 2 cheap scanners or moving heads or if you want zero programming some nice flowers or instant gratification effects from american DJ, sufficiently bright for small parties and a small fog machine (yes you want one).
I would recommend against lasers if you do not want to get into light programming. Make sure, even you do not want to program yet, that everything is DMX ready, so you can easily add a DMX controller later and upgrade your stuff.Hope that helps.

KeymasterI agree with steelo. The amount of stress involved in a wedding can be terrifying, even for the bride herself.
I played a wedding shortly ago, when the time came to play more dance songs as the old audience had left and the young wanted to party the bride came shooting to my booth in tears, she had totally forgotten to tell me about a song she soooo loved to dance and all her girly inner circle, she wanted to bring the CD and WAAAAHAAAAAA. Thanks to digital I saved the day by quickly tethering my iPhone and getting the song from iTunes (I normally do not do that, but before she had a total breakdown …). She seemed pretty normal the meeting we had before the gig, where she gave me her recommended playlist…. but she forgot that song and hey the stress to get it all just right….So just shelf this under: Weddings can be very very very strange…

KeymasterVinny from that perspective VDJ, although it has a hefty initial price, is the cheapest DJ software in the long run. Buy it once, use it on any controller and have free updates for life.

KeymasterWell said D-Jam and excellent video Iceman. (However a few less F*** words would have sufficed hehe) 😉
Terry_42
KeymasterHehe right 🙂
Well I hope Serato does come out with a nice version of Serato DJ Pro 😉 which kind of like VDJ Pro includes Timecode, Controllers, Video etc.
Then we would have real competition going on and 2 competitors that give Traktor a run for its money, since it only works good with NI controllers.Sadly for Atomix I am a long time Apple User (as I also use Logic for producing) but have no clue about development other than some simple Apple Scripts….

KeymasterI think VDJ is not as bad as many people make it. However about 80-90% of my DJ buddies are using MacBooks of some sort to DJ and what is putting everyone off, is the fact that VDJ does not support the Mac as well as Windows.

KeymasterI totally agree. This is why I fight myself not to give into NI and have given back the S4 I borrowed, even though the price he offered it to me was a bargain.
I am now using VDJ Pro 7, so I get the 8 upgrade free anyways. But I kinda liked DJ Intro and Itch.
VDJ just offers more flexibility and I guess with 8 it should solve the few shortcomings it has at the moment, if they make VSTs on the mac happen, I will be hooked on VDJ, at the moment the poor Mac support of VDJ is what keeps me watching for that Serato Upgrade path….Terry_42
KeymasterReloop keeps marketing the Terminal Mix as a Serato Controller.
This time with a performance of DJ Angelo, excellent performance and well made video:
Showing him with Serato DJ Intro, emphasis of the video of course is the excellent jog wheels and nice crossfader they built in the unti, as Angelo is a scratch DJ and turntablist.

KeymasterThe mixtrack pro will get you started and is really the cheapest you should go.
You will eventually outgrow the controller when you get more skilled, but as the mixtrack pro is highly valued, it has also a rather high resell value, so you should still get enough money when you upgrade to another controller.
Also the soundcard in the mixtrack is decent quality and will get you started.
If the venue has PA and lighting, you should be set, just make sure you have enough cables and adapters to plug into a PA, best is to ask what connectors they need and what cable length. Over time you will gather a lot of cables and adapters…Terry_42
KeymasterTypical… thanks. I think I stay with VDJ and hope for the salvation that is VDJ 8 hehe

KeymasterYou just told us about some tools that you can use to DJ in a bar, depending on what you want to do and which type of bar it is, depending on the audience that will be in that place.
However the whole thing is more about: Did you scout the location, do you know what music to bring, do you have a plan or even setlist, do you by any chance know some of the audience. How are your skills yet? Is your style of mixing appropriate or will you just blend songs into each other?…..
All questions much more important, than the tools you use.Terry_42
KeymasterAnd those are really nice speakers, have them myself and very satisfied. Even though I only have the Rockit 6 Version, they have loads of bunch (and I do not use a subwoofer) and really good flat response, plus nice choice of connectors. They also have some forgiveness in them if you do not sweetspot 100% as I like to rock or roll around in my chair sometimes hehe

KeymasterPhil, you could start whining about him whinging about everyone whining… 😉
Sorry just re-watched some Monty Python and that had to go in 🙂
But yeah generally I agree…. whining is not solving anything.Terry_42
KeymasterDid they improve HID and high-res MIDI support in 2.5? Like do the high res jogs on the VCI-400 actually work now or do you still have to buy one of their controllers to get decent jog integration?
May 31, 2012 at 6:57 am in reply to: Why I think controllers are better than traditional DJ'ing #1005367Terry_42
KeymasterI think it will simply expand.
Like in the day when real turntablism was introduced into DJing. Now we have controllerism.
However those styles, due to new hardware, do not have to work seperate any more. You can do many things that were reserved for turntablism easily on some controllers with high end (or even motorized) jogs, same for CDJs. You can introduce controllerism workflows into a turntable setup by adding a laptop and a launchpad etc. etc. etc.
I think all those styles start to blend into each other and this is what get’s the guys that are into really one single thing, hardliners you coud say, crazy. Because sometimes it is easy, the learning curve is different or whatever and sometimes it is simply envy. I know I had to learn beatmatching and turntables that my brother rigged with a pitch control and were not even meant for DJing and it was a pain.
On the other hand: At the end of the day it is about music and your creativity and if you create something awesome by very simple means or by invoking some mad skills that you needed 20 years to master…. as long as it works for the audience (and you actually have one) you are doing ok. If you then take the next step and go home with a feeling of satisfaction that for the time of your gig it was all about celebrating music with a bunch of people and those people could forget their good or bad lives for a few hours and simply enjoy themselves, then you are a winner, no matter how you do it. -
