KeymasterVery true, I remember the time handling crates and setting up the PA… but also learning stuff, for DJing or for live.
However todays youngsters, many of them are different and that is what makes me angry sometimes. Just because they can buy a controller they think they are “da duuude”. Had that situation in a club where I now regulary guest DJ 2-3 times a month. They respect my schedule and are fine and respect that I can push the crowd. So when a young DJ auditioned for a spot, they asked me also to be at the audition as a consultant. Now the youngster was nice, but clearly not ready for this club, so even before asking me what I thought about him, the owner said “buddy you have talent, but you are not ready yet. If Terry agrees you can work with him, so you learn the kinks and when you are ready you have a spot.”
The young boy freaked, said something about me being a motherf*** old fart and how he is the king at all his friends house parties etc. and left with a nice f+++ you on his lips. We were all stunned…. sadly this is an extreme example, but many kids think like that. This kind of behaviour is not productive for mentoring, as I kinda am not really leaning towards taking a padawan now hehe.Terry_42
KeymasterThanks a lot! Some very good advice 🙂

KeymasterThanks synthet1c!
Do you have any word if like in Traktor, that in VDJ 8 we will be able to alter such settings in the software preferences?

KeymasterCrosscheck with Serato, if you still have that problem, it is your unit, else it is the VDJ EQ…

KeymasterCheck here under downloads:
http://www.reloop.com/reloop-terminal-mix-4I have no problem whatsoever with the TM4 and its sound quality.
I even think it has superior sound quality to the NI S4 I used before.Terry_42
KeymasterAll new Macbooks have USB 3.0 on all ports.
D-JAM: I have a 13” Air and a 15” Macbook Pro (Air is previous Version but same casing and MBP is older).
The Aluminium Unibody Construction of those laptops can handle more abuse than any “normal” laptop I have seen. The only real competition for this kind of construction, you would have to opt for ToughBooks. My Air dropped out of my Rucksack once when I was picking it up and did not see that it was still unzipped and though it had a pretty harsh scratch on the casing, it had ZERO problems and still runs like a charm (prolly due to the SSD).
My MBP is what I mainly use for DJing due to the 15” screen real estate, it is old, it looks dirty, it gets slammed into flight cases. It has stickers on it. It gets impregnated with foam, bubbles and smoke, sometime it is hard to clean it off and the keys on the keyboard have scratches etc. It still works flawlessly.Do not underestimate the thin construction. Thin does not mean it cannot take a punch. This thing is contructed from the same aluminium quality and the same unibody design as modern jets. It can take A LOT of abuse.

KeymasterOk I at least found out, that many people with a collection > 8000 songs have this problem. I have about 16k tunes in iTunes… when you do DJ for 20 years you have a large collection… not that I use all that songs (that is why I stored them in the cloud) but when I want one from back in the day I can conveniently download it on the fly… And it also converted my old iTunes purchases that were DRMs to non-DRMs in better quality. (The current 256k AAC is imho on par with 320k mp3s)
I will update the thread when I find out more.

KeymasterHey my callsign is OE6TMF you can catch me on 20m-80m depending on which band is open for intercontinental use. I will try to point my Quad into your direction 😉

KeymasterYou should give this article a read, it explains it very good:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_audioIf you still have further questions after this, let me know. Cabling is an underestimated topic and can be the source of many problems and on the other hand benefits in your setup. I only know so much about it, because I am also a HAM radio operator… and there you need really good cables.

KeymasterGood Luck David. Oh and if you can: Use an RCA to TRS converter on your controller and use a balanced cable for the length to the speakers. At this length a quality balanced cable with TRS connectors on both sides will do a much better job.

KeymasterGet a used Mac if you do not want to buy a new one?
I DJ on an old Macbook pro 15” and it is way beyond the lifetime of any Windows Machine (> 4 years) and still works flawlessly. I don’t want to bash Windows or anything, since I use it myself to play games, but I have seen bad things happen to Djs on stage due to crashes etc. and apart from Traktor 2.5 quitting on its own (which seems to be a Traktor bug) I have never ever been let down by my MacBook.
I know DJs that have set aside the laptop and use it exclusively for DJing so nothing interferes with their Windows ASIO drivers and crap… Fact is I have never had to worry about drivers yet on my MacBook and I have tons of software installed and use it all the time….
You can easily get a good used Macbook for 500 bucks.Terry_42
KeymasterD-Jam nailed it.

KeymasterIf you are on a budget those behringers will do. Definitely go for he B215 though, the 12s are too small to give any bass for disco sound.
However I am not fond of Behringer, they sound pretty harsh and have a lot of hiss. You do get a lot of volume for little buck though and you might need an RCA to TRS converter anyway (RCA over long distances is not good anyways). If you can shelf it out I would go for one of the entry systems of Reloop, HK Audio or Peavey. They cost a bit more than the Behringer but will get you a lot more longer lifespan and road worthiness and have an active subwoofer.
To add even more flexibility to your setup you can easily add a Peavey PV6 PA mixer, that has RCA ins and will hook up to the sound system better.Terry_42
KeymasterGive us a number of people that will attend. Speakers are largely dependent on how many people you want to entertain.
50-100-150-200-2000 all need a different breed of speaker. Surely you can down tune a system for 200 people to play for 50, but not the other way around… -
