KeymasterThe thing is that while I like UK dubstep as it has been and also some of it hip-hop’isch variants, the commercial dubstep that is now, is getting really old fast. Everyone that wants to make a fast buck is listening to a Skryllex song and trying to do the exact same wobble and bass-syn samples over and over again.
Then there is the crowd that is starting to mix the “usual pop-song” with a wobble and there you go… extra credit for effort. Sad really, but it was the same with all genres and it will go away again and sometimes the genre persists and has great creativity in the underground.Terry_42
KeymasterGood advise from the guys. I was in nearly the same position. I sold most of my gear that piled up over the ages, I kept one Technics from the 80s as a token of time hehe and my latest CDJs for backup, but it does not get used anymore…

KeymasterWhat advantage do you honestly think a CDJ would give you?
(Not mentioning the fact that a propper CDJ setup to work with Traktor would cost you around 2000 bucks)Terry_42
KeymasterI just could look at one in the Apple store for a few minutes. But the good news is there is a slider in the display options which basically can do the following: While the display stays at the retina resolution you can set the “applied” resolution to something smaller (say half that). Now the app you start will think the resolution is lower, but will be upscaled to retina level. Much like DVDs are upscaled on HD TVs. I hope you can follow what I am saying, when you see the slider you will immediately know how to use it, its very simple…

KeymasterKeep your active collection small with quality tunes. The rest for me is instinctive, where since I went digital it is more easy. Before I started remembering what was where by looking at either the markers on the vinyl or when I heard the first few bars through the headphones. Now with digital most of the time I look at the waveform and the cue points I had set and go from there, as it all springs to mind rather rapidly.
Knowing what sort of acapellas, instrumentals and other remixes you can mix together is another cup of tea and most of the time I just throw in the instrumental I want to rock and then remember what goes over there and if not… improvise heheTerry_42
KeymasterI would recommend to also check out the Reloop Digital Jockey 3 and Terminal Mix 2/4 and invest the rest in good speaker monitors.
But you should try which controller performs best for you. So try before buy is always good.
The S4 is IMHO hugely overrated.Terry_42

KeymasterYou are right it is really easy if you know how, but many people will just diss VDJ for bad jog performance, not knowing that it is actually easy to tune.
For example would I not have found out about this, I would still be using DJ Intro for Jog wheel performance…. even though I can only use 2 Decks with it…Terry_42
KeymasterI agree with D-Jam and Steelo.

KeymasterI would love to have a cool themed club, where everyone feels like a VIP and with a second floor bar area. Affordable but with VIP treatment of every person and open minded DJ sets that are allowed to change genres.

KeymasterWell I am too using whatever is the best tool for the occasion. I am actually currently testing Traktor 2.5 with my Terminal Mix…
synthet1c IS a VDJ god 😛 There are few people outside VDJ developers, that know as much about it as synthet1c does. If I need advice about VDJ I ask him and I actually would use VDJ full time if VSTs would work on Macs, because of how I was able to set it up through his tips. Now I am not dissing any DJs using Traktor or any other software, as I prolly use it too. However being a bit obsessed with tools is actually what it takes sometimes… Look at Ean Golden and his team. Now I think it is marvelous what they hack into their midi fighters and the midi fighter 3d hack for Traktor remix decks is totally awesome by the looks of it. But it is totally the same obsession, just for Traktor. AND I think they have a harder time than synthet1c as they have to actually hack the software/firmware, whereas in VDJ you can do it out of the box.
Look at other DJs like Deadmau5 or Skrillex. They are obsessed with their tools too, just look at how Skrillex has modified his Ableton and his gear and buttons… Obsession with tools surely can go very far, sometimes it leads to success and sometimes not.
I would not call any user noob and maybe it was a little emotional on both of your sides… I know enough Noobs using any of the big softwares… just as I know enough Pros that use any of the big softwares. Be open minded and do not dis anyone.

KeymasterI kind of like Traktor as a program and like where it is going with Remix Decks. However what puts me off, is that NI is neither being open and let any controller have that benefits, nor really closed (like Itch). So they always want to give you an edge when you buy their sometimes crappy gear. I had an S4 for 3 months and I have to say, nobody in their right mind would buy it for its pricetag if NI didn’t put in that extra tight Traktor stuff.
The fact however is, that Traktor has 2 things going for it:
1. It had the first on market advantage – this is a huge thing in marketing and you can expect at least 50% better hype than others
2. NI has good endorsers that have the best websites.
And that is what it is: Endorsement. If NI payed me and Vestax made me a Terry 42 Edition VCI 400 with custom firmware… hell sure I would use that too, because it is what I needed. And if I can make a good buck with it why the hell not?June 14, 2012 at 6:40 am in reply to: What one lesson has playing in front of a real audience taught you about programming / song choice? #1006165Terry_42
KeymasterGood organization saves you programming time and the need to search your whole collection….
Like have the BPM there already in iTunes if you make playlists there.
I then make playlists by genre and by putting low energy songs first and the highest energy songs last. So I know where to scroll in the playlist to search for a particular energy I need.
If you mix in key, have the key clearly visible, even having it in 2 places can be beneficial if you use different DJ software.
MixedInKey is a valuable tool and worth trice its money…. -
