Keymaster99.9% of the time I have no problems setting up my controller and laptop and many clubs even welcome it.
As the others said, just practice beatmatching on your controller and you will be fine in the occasion that you need to use the CDJs. Always have a USB drive with your music as backup to put it into the CDJs.
Most clubs will have CDJ 1000 or 2000s and you should be fine with those if you learned how to beatmatch. Just do not panic and not get intimidated by the setup.
If you use VDJ just burn some timecode CDs most of the time the clubs will have the necessary gear (or CDJ 2000) that you can plug into your laptop and use the same as your midi controller and use VDJ to DJ. Just head to the VDJ forums and wiki and know how to hook it up.Terry_42
Keymaster1. it feels sturdy. I had it only for 2 days to play around, but it feels great. You can replace the crossfader should it give…
2. I think it is save to buy, IF you can live with its limitations and features… (but you prolly researched those before choosing)
3. depends on if you want to use Itch, then the VCI-380 is prolly the backpack thing to get.
4. No ideaTerry_42
KeymasterBest DJ controller?
For Traktor: Reloop Jockey 3 ME or if you have it for the bedroom -> VCI-400 EGE
For Itch: Twitch or if you have the money VCI-380
For Serato (whatever it will be): Reloop Terminal Mix 2/4
For VDJ: Reloop Terminal Mix 2/4Best DJ headphones?
Zomo HD-1200Best Speakers?
Budget: M-Audio AV 40
Mid-Range: KRK Rockit 5 or 6
If you have the money: Set of Adams of your likingTerry_42
KeymasterI think you are going for the worst possible setup with a midi fighter and timecodes if your budget is 500…
if you want to really scratch, the turntables + slipmats will be over your total budget and a good scratch mixer (that you can actually use) will be AT LEAST 500.Terry_42

I wouldn’t buy a pioneer controller as they don’t feel great to use, your better off with a reloop terminal 4, NS6/4track or VCI-400
I second that opinion.

KeymasterAll 3 run perfectly on the latest Mac HW and Lion, I have no idea what your problem is until you tell us what the problem is…

KeymasterSame here, I do deep house, belearic and even some raggea’ish to italo-house in a cocktail bar on sunday afternoons “chill hours”.

KeymasterFirst of all we are saying that we want an upgrade path from DJI not that we want Itch and SSL combined, but that a combination would make sense (as in VDJ and Traktor already did it). These days there are things like quality control, unit tests etc. so this can be done in a stable fashion and without killing your codebase. (If they do it right.)
Now while I am on boat with you that from all the LE/light versions I have seen, that intro is one of the best (if not the best) to get the job done and it might actually be sufficient for many DJs, for many others it is not.
We (I guess the more controllerist side) like things like slicers, 4 decks, more samplers with sync, possibly a bridge to video and ableton etc. etc. etc.
I am totally on your boat, that for blending songs at a house party this is unnecessary, there are those of us who would like to get more. Like there are people that when they have tasted the icing, they always want their cake with icing… If Serato does not follow through on this, then people like me will simply move to another software and from a business point this would make no sense. This is why we actually EXPECT Serato to do something fast, or with the release of VDJ 8 it will be over for them.A reason supporting our flow of thoughts are the recent controller releases:
The reloop Terminal Mix is branded a “Serato” controller, it comes with DJI but it has 4 decks and more buttons than Intro can use and one button even with a slicer (that actually to this point I have only seen in Itch).
Also the newest Itch controller (VCI-380) has no Itch logo on it, like al previous Itch controllers, it has a simple Serato stamp on it.
Now I personally because of the limitations of Intro have to use Traktor with my Terminal Mix, which is actually a Serato controller. I could not care less if the new software from Serato will have timecode or if that will be left for SSL, but I want a pro grade software from Serato, as I hugely prefer the layout and jog-action of Serato compared to Traktor, which at the moment is only a compromise for me.Terry_42
KeymasterIn theory yes that would be sufficient, however the sound will be mono of course… then again some club setups are even mono. On the other hand some clubs require you to plug in via balanced line outputs etc. etc.
So you should actually talk to the club owner what he expects from you (e.g. with what cable(s) he want’s you to connect to his PA).
You should also look into your laptop’s soundcard, some laptop soundcards really suck. You cannot hear that via the internal speakers, but if you connect really good headphones or a PA the sound quality will be sad.If you are looking into cheap options for a sound-card, most “value” soundcards come at around 100 bucks.
If you buy a NI A2 you get Traktor Pro 2 for free, which is at this price point a nice option.
Somewhat cheaper you should get the entry soundcards from reloop and numark, both get the job done nicely and cost about 60-70 bucks street price.
If you are really low on budget there is the gemini entry thing for about 30 bucks, it is OK output wise, however it is VERY plasticy and I have no idea if it holds up over time.So talk to the club owner what he expects first, then decide what you buy/do.

KeymasterTowel works on my body, why not on the gear hehe
Seriously, towels are dirt cheap and get the job done, for transportation use flightcases anyways.Terry_42
KeymasterIndeed. I currently spin on a Reloop Terminal Mix and with those jogs, manual beatmatching is really easy. Even scratching is no problem and WAY BETTER than on CDJs. I rarely use the sync button anyhow…

KeymasterLet me think what is wrong with the S4 after having gigged with one for 2 months:
Soudcard – yes even the VMS 2 and the Reloop Mixage sound better and have better D/As
USB port is…
Booth out? You need to invest into a levelmaster to fix that…
build quality overall is just plasticy
real jog wheels, I mean the want us to use their controllers for tight jogwheels and then they give us this crap???
better pitch faders
and a better pricepoint (currently the S4 is a rippoff for a plastic unit)

KeymasterI actually have this like 30 seconds buildup I made from drum and bass loops that do not really fit any genre. It get’s the peoples attention without being to obscure, at the end I have like this small scream and slam in a real high energy track… works every time.

KeymasterBad breakdown? 1,2,3,4 hit cuepoint after the break… done, thank you.
Preparing your music is key and programming your set, not just walk up and play from the top of your head. Guess you had to learn it the hard way.Terry_42
KeymasterI am using loops mostly when I do a live remix of a song, so I know it won’t breakdown on me etc.
But for this I need the instrumental track prepared with cue points to jump the loop and I need the accapella with cue points to mix in and the right samples prepared…Sometimes I also try to extend the “go mental” part of some songs before a break with a loop to tip the dancefloor towards exhaustion, so they are thankful for the break in the song hehe
And loops are very very useful for the loop cutdown blend, when you blend a high BPM song into a slow one. I think there is a youtube tutorial for that, I do it almost the same way (I add less effects). -
