KeymasterHonestly: If I would play infront of 10k to 50k people all the time with that kind of budget, I would also never use a controller and a laptop. Just because I have to look big. In all honesty it would be rather underwhelming if he did.
Even though I would prolly only use a view midi keyboards and ableton to produce my stuff I would at least make it look like I am using A TON to deliver on stage, even if it is all pre-recorded or I just push timed buttons (quote Deadmau5) to show off. A part of entertaining such a big crowd is to show off and hence you need that kind of setup.
Also hopefully half his gear is from endorsement contracts anyways (hopefully if his management arent dopes). So even if a controller is all I needed I would go for the same crap he has…

KeymasterI totally agree with you and there are 2 implications in your statements:
1. There are more people now calling themselves DJs than there are new DJs, which I fully agree with but has been discussed to death in some threads already.
2. It is not always easy to identify the quality of a DJ for people that are not DJs themselves or at least in the music biz. This is actually a very good point and I would love to see a discussion on this topic. As a matter of fact I will open one this instant hehe

KeymasterThanks guys 😉 and of course the answer is 42, but if you need a DJ the answer has a “Terry” infront of the 42 hehe

KeymasterWelcome to the forums and since I am mostly in Austria (if I am not like now in Italy) we are neighbours 😉

KeymasterThanks for all the likes on facebook guys!
I will make sure to like you back next week… I am on a beach festival this week playing all day and only have an hour every evening to do my moderation stuff on the forum via my iPhone link… and I am really dead at this time hehe (it has like 40°C in the booth during some hours…)

KeymasterAre you using VDJ LE or the Pro version?
Cause this is kind of weird, however if using the Pro version you can always open a ticket at the atmix website, they would be much faster at helping as they can make sense of logfiles.
If you are using the LE version, you might have to try to reinstall it first (your settings should still be there…)Terry_42
KeymasterI would say this is mostly personal preference on how they are setup and if you want the option to use another software later…

KeymasterIt does come with ASIO drivers for windows.

KeymasterI would agree with synthetic’s assessment of those controllers. Also the build quality and jogs of the TM2 is awesome.

KeymasterIf you have ableton and a launchpad I fail to see why you need a controller rather than a second launchpad or Midi Fighter or TouchOSC or whatever….

KeymasterIf you have the budget you said, I would get a Mixtrack pro and save the rest for later.
The mixtrack pro will get you started nicely.
If you really want to invest more from the start, check out the Terminal Mix series. The do not innovate a lot, but they are the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Do not forget to factor in some decent headphones if you did not already get them and check out our free DJ guides and videos. Now to your questions:
1) Yes.2) You will most likely want a soundcard. For real mixing you need at least 2 audio outputs (at least) one for speakers and one for your headphones and sometimes an additional one for the DJ booth. Most controllers with soundcards have at least 2 channel audio to do that. (Terminal Mix has Booth out too.) You might want to look for Phil’s video on why you need headphones… Also most soundcards in controllers have much better audio quality than the laptop soundcards.
3) Yes the mixtrack pro is good enough to play infront of most crowds, so is the N4 (however it is all plastic and you could get a metal Terminal Mix at the same price)
4) Djay does support a lot of controllers, but is only 2 channels. It has come a long way and is nice to dj with. However most of the controllers you listed also support Serato DJ Intro, which in some aspects excels Djay and in some not. You can always try both… if Djay does not support your controller natively it has a great MIDI learn function, that will make it easy for you to make your controller work with it. (You need Djay and an Apple Laptop of course to work like that, the listed controllers DO NOT work with an iPad.)

Yes you can do that, but that would be like buying a 800 HP Ferrari and driving it in automatic mode all day (not that prolly many owners do that, because they cannot use the paddles… but that is a different story hehe)

KeymasterIndeed Oddity I see the same trend going on here. The clubs rather buy some of those cheapish CDJs like the Denon compact line etc. only for backup and actually expect you to come with a controller and laptop…

KeymasterYou will make it, I am sure! Be yourself and enjoy the gig! Keep your blogs coming, I love to read em.

KeymasterNot a bad idea at all. I do not know however how many posts we would get in such a forum.
Do you think it would be enough to open up a separate section? (Please others who would like such a forum chime in with your opinions.) -
