The turntables would just be for “feel” of turntables, you would not use real vinyl music on them, but timecode vinyl. Those are specific vinyls with timecode for computers on them, that will show the software where you are and what you are doing. The whole thing is called DVS (digital vinyl system).
If you are already settled in your mind on the S4 and Traktor go for it, but I cannot see that you are already in such a stage.
I would rather go for something way cheaper (like a mixtrack pro) and learn stuff, try different things etc. and then possibly a year from now, you can make yourself an educated decission on what to get next.
Yes this would mean that will buy twice (as the mixtrack pro will be obsolete when you buy something new), but the mixtrack pro used is selling like hotcakes on ebay for quite a nice price, so you will not loose too much value or you could always keep it as a backup controller.

Hmm I have never encountered where Serato would “slip” into anything I did not tell it too… it surely does not engage sync on its own.
I do not have a 300, but you should be able to get the sensitivity of the pitch faders adjusted in the software options or similar (I cannot remember in Itch and no longer have an Itch controller…)

SSDs from OCZ are by far the best I have every used 😉
It is also not only a choice to go for SSD because of value or speed. For DJing a normal HD is enough, the fact that there are no moving parts is what makes SSDs so nice.

This is a lot about personal preference. I would hugely recommend to download the Traktor demo first and try it. You can easily enough map it or get a TSI mapping for your controller. Even with mouse and keyboard you can get a good impression on what Traktor will have to offer you. I would do the same for the VDJ demo.
I am not yet familiar with Cross but it seems like an up and coming software and the French have a great history in electronic music making. So if that floats your boat better after having tested the other 2 softwares, then by all means go for it. If then you are decided on the software part, go look for the controller that suits you best and integrates good with your choice of software.
This is how I would approach this things.

You can set the pitch response in Traktor. I would recommend going to youtube and look up some tuning tutorials for traktor. With that settings manual beatmatching should not be a problem. I rarely use the sync button at all.

welcome to the forums. quite a story you got there friend 🙂 I like it. being interested in many things and broaden your horizon is always a good thing.

now to your first question: yes, there are several DJs who use ableton and launchpads (or launchpad style interfaces like midi fighters, midi drumpads,…) to DJ and make live mashups and mixes. I cannot comment too much as I use ableton solely to produce before a gig and then use VDJ to DJ, but I have seen very nice things done with that kind of gear and if it is your cup of tea, by all means go for it.

While the old T60’s where very reliable laptops and build like tanks unlike many laptops today, they never were top of the line in performance. So my best guess would be, that Win7 is too much to handle for a laptop at this age, since Win7 really needs processing power itself. Also the 1,67 Processor in the T60 is the lowend processor for that model, that does not help either… So my guess is that your laptop is simply underpowered.
When you look at NIs spec for Traktor 2 you are riding below their recommended Specs… maybe if you would run XP it could work?

I am sure if we knew what the problem was, we could better tell you if we can help.
Also please make a thread with a more descriptive title like “need help with VDJ sound routing…” etc. this would get more people to actually read your thread, who potentially can help.

Since this threads topic is resolved I am closing this one, please post a new topic with a question. Thanks for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Well I use the Terminal Mix and for Pro Software have upgraded to VDJ Pro.
Those 2 work together pretty well I have to say and since VDJ 8 is around the corner I will get a free upgrade to it.

In this case I would go for a mixage. It is a pretty decent controller. I think Phil also made several of his videos for his DJ course with the mixage.

Well I already bought the Terminal Mix…. hehe
Denon is a good choice too, very solid controllers, but they are getting older and the jogs are not as nice.
The Twitch is something totally different. If you do not need jogwheels it is a thing to look at, but I cannot do without jogs.

Why not learn beatmatching with the VCI 300? It is perfect for manual beatmatching… just don’t look at the screen.
I think Phil is working with a 300 all the time and he is manual beatmatching all his stuff.

Go for a cheap but good beginners controller. Getting to learn manual beatmatch, music etc. will take you a year. Then decide what to buy next, as there will be new gear and new software available. It would make more sense than buying top end equipment, that you cannot use to its potential yet.
Apart from that steelo is right. However I fail to see why I would want to use CDJs with an S4. I see no advantage to CDJ 450s compared to what the S4 offers already. If you would have said turntables, then yes turntables and the S4 would be a good idea.

I would never go for a controller that has not been tested before…
If you start out, the mixtrack pro is a good starting point, or for VDJ the reloop beatmix.

The mixtrack is no turntable so connecting it to a phono input is wrong and can lead to what you described… you would need a “line in” or “aux in” to connect your mixtrack (or any other input with line level).
