    @tommy hear me,

my aunt works in a call center, though its for a utilities company so she helps people with their bills, and yes I agree that its good to be nice to legitimates, because they’re just doing their job, true. sometimes I even ask to speak to their supervisors just to express how wonderful the person was and that they deserve a promotion or pay rise, because why not?

the first 2 I mentioned were definitely scammers though because they wanted to know eligibility which equates to “whats your address” “whats your age” things like that, they made it clear they didn’t care if I wasn’t interested in their offer which logically would make an eligibility check pointless, they were just interested in getting my info. they don’t use manners, their phone scripts are dodgy and they hang up on you without a second thought.

now that I know keeping them on the phone costs them money, I feel a lot better about my plan to mess with them in the future for my own amusement. “blah blah solar panels?” “no thanks, its permanently night time here and the night is dark & full of terrors…”

    @Rizki,

    Nah, not yet anyway 🙂

    *correction*
As for the general good vibes and jazz/funk mood and melodic elements of jungle that became liquid, anything ‘hospital’, anything jazz/funk influenced. which is quite a broad range of sounds. the darker side of jungle & the more upbeat nrg styles evolved into other sub genres of D&B.

“A lot of the artists you just posted are either many many years defunct or are full on drum & bass. Not “jungle” at all.”

When I first posted my reply I linked to a song from every artist I listed that was undeniably jungle. this post got deleted, not by me and I don’t know why. what is ironic is in the original post I literally wrote the same thing about your post. something along the lines of:

“+1 for benny page, eveson & duoscience, all good stuff there, but all liquid, not jungle”

I posted 3 lists, the 2nd & 3rd where clearly labeled as not jungle. So I’m going to assume you’re referring to the first list and that you don’t just go around half reading s**t and then addressing the arms and legs without acknowledging the rest of the body.

everyone in the first list has produced excellent jungle tunes. this is fact.
what I will agree with you about is that yes, those tunes I’m thinking of are old.
However some not as old as you may think though, the artists listed there produced good jungle tunes from 94′-2007ish or more recent off the top of my head.

Also while I agree that some of the artists listed are ‘defunct’ as you put it, many of those artists are not ‘defunct’.
Photek, Andy C, LTJ Bukem, Congo Natty/Tribe of Issachar, London Elektricity, Roni Size, all produced jungle tunes in the 90’s and still produced tunes is the 00’s and most of are still releasing tunes today. now the tunes they release today are not jungle, but in the 90’s it was.

So that addresses your point about whether things are jungle or not.
now to explain why I posted some older tunes…

The thread author posted “Looking at doing a kinda Reggae/Jungle thing.” and mentioned that they loved the jungle from the 90’s & was aware that ‘dnb had taken over’.

I only know of a handful of modern jungle tunes, I noticed that many of the artists you listed I’d not heard before, so I thought, I’ll post the ones he didn’t mention, they may not all still be making jungle, the tunes may be old but at least its jungle; and perhaps the thread author will see some in their he’d not heard before and choose to use them in his ‘thing’ regardless of the tunes being ‘old’.

    So that’s it.

However if you want to you can continue reading to understand what my own personal definition of ‘jungle’ is.

    Peace.

Off the top of my head and from the perspective of a producer my definition of jungle is as follows:

primarily sinewave/trianglewave mono phonic basslines that sound smooth and very low & ‘subby’.

if reese synth are used, or any other bass oriented or low-mid/mid synth its typically as fx or ‘thin’ lead ornamentation, there isn’t often any real main lead synth or low-mid/mid focus, focus is on the bass melodically & minimal ‘keys’ style instruments and pads in the ‘hi’ range.

the rhythm is all about the drum kit. the kits are based on the amen break in sound, or jazz kits, or rearranged loops that are similar to jazz/amen kits and rhythms. the most important & defining characteristic of jungle is drum pattern/rhythm exploration & experimentation, delay, stutter, loop & filter fx are used in breaks, fills & variations along with the rhythmic changes for extra effect and to further liberate creativity. There are often very big reverbs used with the perc & kit elements to fill the space created by the minimal instrumentation.

The style was popularized with pioneer producer alex reese and originally the genre was quite minimal and a slower tempo of 155-165bpm. throughout the 90’s it got faster, new sounds were being invented, new moods experimented with, and sub-genres grew out of it.

so to my ears, ‘true’ jungle is the above.

As for where jungle is today, I don’t know, I don’t hear jungle producers anymore, I don’t look for specific sub genres anymore, I gave that up in favour for the “this is good” or “this I don’t like” approach.

However, I believe that if it doesn’t have the detailed drum pattern variation, and the minimal approach to everything else, its not jungle, its something else. What I do see are liquid, neurofunk and breakcore artists dabbling in the iconic sounds with a handful of tracks here and there. and I see how the elements of jungle have been reiterated into entirely new genres.
My personal opinion is that the rhythmic exploration side of jungle continued to evolve and has ended up in breakcore, particularly I’m thinking ‘krumble’. but I think breakcore is now evolving again and on the one side we have ‘Igorrr’. on the other side we have ‘sinister souls’ and ‘cooh/balkansky’.

nonetheless while all the other sub-genres of dnb i hear these days are typically sparse in rhythmic changes & exploration in a track say 10% variation, and old-school jungle was more 90% variation, the only place I hear that drum variation happening is with breakcore, and whatever Igorrr wishes to call his music.

As for the general good vibes and jazz/funk mood and melodic elements of jungle liquid, anything ‘hospital’, anything jazz/funk influenced. which is quite a broad range of sounds. the darker side of jungle & the more upbeat nrg styles evolved into other sub genres.

its working again for me too.

over the last 2 weeks I’ve hit post 3-4 times only to have my writing disappear and no post appear.
then I posted a big reply with lots of youtube links which posted this morning and disappeared by this afternoon. still puzzled about that one, scratching it up to either too much server strain as all the links got embedded automatically OR because one of the videos contained swearing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for a while there I thought I’d inadvertently made an enemy out of a moderator type in quite possibly the friendliest forum I’ve ever participated in… stranger things have happened…

nice to be able to scrap that idea tho coz after reading this it seems more like a bug type thing…

    Peace

tried replying to ya about a week ago and my post didn’t post. since then I’ve had more posts not post and others just disappear..
    so I’ll try again..

    glad you enjoyed the tunes.

seems this thread died before it got started which is a shame because I was hoping to find out about some radio station gems I didn’t know about, but it is what it is.

    peace.

this is attempt 2 of posting this.. post, so I’ll keep it brief…

google+ may not be any good as a promo tool, but I think would be a good means to keep in contact with other djs, or producers or whatever, simply because it isn’t that popular, so you could use say facebook for broader discussions with the public and google+ for more collaboration or specialized discussion…

I posted a pretty epic reply here earlier today which has disappeared which sux because I put alot of effort into it.

I then posted something along the lines of ‘hey my post disappeared! why? :(” which never showed up so this is my last attempt.

I gonna have to go with my gut and assume I posted too many links to you tube videos as this has been the case with other forums but its a bit disappointing to have my posts disappear without any notification that its happened.

warsuits opinion on writing comps is basically where my ideas come from also, I used to do the same thing, and competing against the heavy weights made me step up my game too.. like I entered for fun, but when I saw what the other guys were doing I suddenly got a whole lot better at writing purely because i started putting more effort in.

    1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?

you know already, but to officially voice in the poll, yes, and as often as is practical, if I had to guess, bi-monthly.

    2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?

everytime I could for as long as it was fun or I was learning something. it would help motivate me. if not everytime, every second time.

    3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?

I don’t mind either way, personally I would still enter and still get something good out of it even if these vet’ dj’s kicked my ass everytime.

    4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?

enjoyability? not sure really. I think perhaps it should depend on the structure of the comp, do we choose our own material or have a list of tunes provided and its up to use to show what we can do with those tunes?… I think probably everyone having the same tunes to work with would make it easier to judge, or if each comp had a theme or genre… and certain set lengths I think should be a parameter also..

    5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?

    winning.

    hope that helps some,
    Peace

be good if someone could chip in on this, I’ve been considering google + for promo too… it seems to do this thing where if u comment on something on youtube it links back to your google plus thing… so that might be good.. another way to draw attention to you business sort of thing via youtube comments… can’t think of any other way your youtube comments could be used as a promotional tool except spam and spam is awful.
