Memberyou need drivers to make anything on linux work, unfortunately because it is open source and changes to the OS happen so often companies don’t bother creating divers for their gear to work on linux. If you can get the midi to work you could use a maya-44 soundcard which has drivers for linux and is the preferred card for mixxx users running timecode vinyl. If I were you I’d get on the mix forum and see if anyone can help you.
I have been reading mixxx’s future roadmap and it looks like the essential missing features of shifting and chained effects are being worked on now so it should be as capable as any other software soon. I would never replace VDJ Pro with it though, but it would be better than running VDJ through WINE 😉

MemberIf you want to one day be a superstar playing festivals you need to be a producer… Fruity loops is the easiest software to master for production as you can fully use the software without reading the manual or having any tutorials. To learn it I just clicked on random things until I got a feel for what they do.
That said ableton is much much better but you have to read the manual or follow lots of tutorials to understand the program fully, but once you do everything is very well laid out. Cubase is not as friendly as the first two but sounds much better and you have more options to control the sound, but I felt like you needed a degree in Production to understand it the same as Reason.
If all you want to do is DJ with as little setup as possible then serato is probably the best, if you want to buy into contollerism traktor is the best, but if you want to create you own way of doing things then VDJ8 will be the best.

Membermake the latency smaller, it is the buffering of the audio probably.

Membermake sure the line/phono switches for the soundcard inputs are set to “line” if you don’t have tables connected & turn the mic volume down if none is connected.
If you still have the noise disconnect the PSU from your laptop and run it on battery, if that fixes the issue you need to buy a “ground loop isolator” to go between your soundcard and speakers… their about $5 – $20 on eBay.

Memberdo you mean sound delay as in the sound output is different in the headphones and the master or latency when you do something on the controller has noticeable lag?

MemberVDJ Pro! if you like to get technical with few limitations and can stand an almost complete software which has more features than any other competitor (VDJ8 will hopefully bring all these features together for novice users).
Traktor if you like a little modification and are happy with the quality of NI gear because nothing else will work with it properly,
Intro if you are just wanting plugin and play two tracks.
VDJ LE is the worst LE software as the eq is terrible, the mapping is always basic and the effects are shockingly bad in quality… You should contact numark to see if they give you a different serial, I remember someone on the vdj forum saying they were able to do that a while ago. It will be essential if you choose to go with VDJ as it gives you 50% off which is just over $150…

MemberAtomix won’t tell, but my money is on the BPM expo later in the year being the stage for release to gain the most attention. so it will probably still be a little while yet but VDJ Pro on PC is more than capable of doing anything other programs can do, it can actually do more than any other dj software currently available, the only exception is the remix decks but you could make a workaround to get the same end result but not as good implementation.

MemberI had a digital jockey 3, it was a great controller quality wise and has everything you need on the interface, although I’m not fond of the led ring encoders in the effects section due to it being a little hard to see the middle range of the led unless you have the controller angled or your eyeline is much higher than the controller and I prefer absolute knobs. This controller only really works 100% in VDJ Pro (scratching, timecode) but it’s design is optimised for traktor.
VCI 300 always felt sparse to me but the vfx could probably fix what is missing, this will not work in traktor but has been mapped for VDJ and used by one of their forums moderators who only has good things to say. And I really like the implementation of the pitch shifting in intro to accommodate the 7bit pitch fader.
The TM2 Is probably the best though as it gives you access to two software packages natively, has large 14bit pitch faders which is very important for beatmatching, will probably have the most use in of functions in the serato upgrade if/when it happens. There is less shifting required than the DJ3 but only 1 soundcard input instead of 2 so you can run only 1 timecode natively in VDJ “but you can use the mic input for a second table with a length of wire and a male 1/4 inch trs to dual female rca converter”

MemberIt’s a trap! mixing in key sounds safe and stops you from developing the ability to pick a good track from your memory. The best mixes I have ever come across have no business being together key wise but work absolutely perfectly. I you have a hunch about what will work run with it, don’t worry about the key try it otherwise you will sound exactly the same as the million other dj’s who play the same tracks and rely on the key to choose their next song.
If your not original you better be damn pretty or well connected because literally anyone can go to a popular blog and steal music, sync tracks on pirated software and rely on key matching or genius to choose their next song. If you develop your own identity people can copy your setlist but no one can copy the spontaneity and the musical knowledge that you have earned, that’s were you value lies otherwise there can be any good looking autopilot dj doing it.

Memberlivetronica is something with a bright future that is in public beta testing at the moment so it’s free until it hits full release, but if you provide feedback from beta testing you will get a free copy…
It is not completely stable yet but the creator is reaching for the limit of a what’s possible in dj software incorporating the best elements from DAW and DJ software. Might be worth a look as it could truly be a contender one day if the developer expands and gets the right people in on the project.
But in general mac misses out on open source programs, VDJ Home is free but it’s obviously got omissions of Pro features.

MemberVDJ Pro, turntables, reloop dj2, novation nocturn at home, plus I have a efx1000, djm600, kaoss pad 2, stanton SA-6, Numark DXM09, mpd 24, mpk mini, icon idj, icon istage, reloop contour… I prefer timecode as I like the feeling of vinyl, but the heart of everything is VDJ Pro, and because the software is as customizable as it is, I can have the functionality of any hardware that I want, and instead of having to buy another piece of hardware anytime a want a change I can just remap anything anyway I can think of, or ask the vdj developer community to make a new plugin.

MemberThat guy talk’s a hell of a lot but doesn’t say much, I’d take anything he says with a grain of salt.

MemberI kind of agree but with things like filter sweeps that cut the sound so much if you use you whole body you move the knob more precisely than with your fingers, a violinist or some other musician throwing their head back on a really high note is because they are in tune with the music they are playing and their emotion becomes one with the sound. Dj’s can push it too far but it’s in the same field of expression & if done genuinely in the moment and not just for the crowd or appearance I can’t see a problem with it.
synthet1c
Memberthe perfect level is 0bd that’s in the middle with no filtering or boost of the signal, but use your ears, the point of having an eq is so you can make adjustments as necessary.
