Mixing anything is easy when you have done it for a bit, but would I do a performance of tracks I didn’t like? never, 99.8% of a dj’s job is to select good music and you can’t do that if you dont first like the music… eg can I mix hardstyle? hells yes, but can I mix it well? hells no, why… cause I think it sounds like garbage these days.

I’m a club dj only, so this probably won’t work for mobile guys, but I seperate genre then sub genre, then write the feel of the track in the comment field eg. bangin, massive, deep, anthem, loopy, tribal etc… and what part of a set the track would fit eg. open, start, peak, end, close, and whether the intensity builts drops or stays in the middle. I do it the first time I listen to a track after buying it

If I were you though, I would seperate them into crowd types, probably the most relevant would be age brackets like

    tweens – rnb, pop
teenagers – rnb, hip hop, commerial dance, pop, emo! (LOL)
young adult – electro, drum n bass, dubstep, house, hard dance, rap etc…
over 28 – 90’s rock, classic dance, classic hip hop, classic rap
over 40 – 70’s rock, rock n roll, frank sinatra & other crap
    family – dunno the wiggles I guess…

they all have very different taste in music, and that way you don’t need to set anything up for a function unless requested

if your using tp2, forget about the ns6, it’s built for serato, it also doesn’t have the right amount of knobs to control the effects section that’s why numark is releasing the 4trak, not a fan of the silver over the grey though..

but I would choose the vestax over anything else, It doesn’t look at all wanky & if it feels anything like their old pcm scratch mixers it will be a winner, but I can’t see it not being as good, I don’t use traktor though so It will have perfect intigration with VDJ, but I have read a lot about jogs not working optimally in traktor so I would wait for reviews or get into a store and use one before outlaying the cash…

still waiting to get one, for what i do it will dominate anything else on the market from the looks of things, but using the jogs off the vci 100 mk2, probably not as ideal for scratching, so the ns6 or the 4 trak would be better in your case. but from all the reviews the vci 400 screams quality… and you can stick an innofader or five in there if needed.

if you don’t need to use a pitch fader you could always get a reloop contour interface edition, I had one that never got used, it’s great quality construction fits right next to a 4 channel mixer when raised up a little and each unit has a 10 out soundcard for 4 decks and a headphone out, it has internal shifts for each button, the jog is the highest resolution you can get, although the top of the jog is anodised aluminium so a little slippery, the jogs have 10 modes for each deck, it’s a great controller I just don’t use it as I didn’t have the space for it with my current setup, and I didn’t really need the extra functions it offered…

4 trak doesn’t have moving platters, they have a led ring around the outside of the platter to let you know the track position, in terms of a controller for scratching the ns6 is the best due to the flawless intigration with itch, if numark do the same with traktor i would definately say that is the one to go for, as the s4 is poorly built in comparisson and has a shelf life as long as the warranty, the numark will last well beyond that.

P.S. the jogs on the pioneer are pressure sensitive not touch sensitive, so you have to physically push the top of it to enable scratching, it’s okay if you are a mix dj who occasionally does baby scratches and transforms, but if you want to get more involved in scratching electronic touch sensitive ones will enable you to put less pressure on the jog so there is less friction therefore you can scratch much faster.

    no worries bro,

just so you know how a granulizer effect will work it should do two things,

first you pick the grain size, that’s just a really small loop.in sizes like 1/32, 1/64, 1/128, 1/256

Then you pick a multiplier of how many times the individual loop will play before moving forward to the next loop eg

    multiple of 1
    123456789

    multiple of 4
    111122223333444455556666777788889999

this will make a sound usually a word stutter, if it is a good effect it should have a hold button so you can stop progressing through the loop and hold the one sound eg

    111122223333444444444444444444444444444

it’s an oldschool dj issac hardstyle production trick then when you hold the sound apply a gate, or even better a step sequenced trance gate to give your new sound some rythm. I personally use vdj to achieve this sound with a vst plugin “dblue stretch” by the guys who make glitch and the “trance m gate” vdj plugin, it is very effective. if you do it right the sound does this
    ppppnnnnoooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww–ww–ww–ww–ww–ww–ww–ww–ww–ww–
    11112222333344444444444444444444444444–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–44–
granulize vocal sample——–hold——-gate wet/dry increase—————slam in the new tracks bass

just picture the 1111 etc as 1/64th loops for one bar, this is just a guide line, it should be drawn out much longer to built anticipation… Also it sounds a hundred times better if you invert the gate so it cuts on the kick and release a bit of the tension from the cut, it will give you a push/pull side chain type of effect.
    enjoy

cool routine, but im being picky, the jay z acapella was a little behind the beat, you need to move it forward a fracton so it’s in phase… great tracks though

@the rest of the thread, no tribe called quest…. no hip hop

it’s a “transpose” to stetch the sound… and gate, to cut the sound.

I don’t use traktor so dont know the specific settings to achieve it, just have a play around in advanced mode.

before you start reading, this doesn’t have a soundcard, I find all small controllers soundcards lacking in quality, your best bet is to get a controller without a soundcard and a Native Instruments Audio 2… If you wan’t the smallest controller you could get the icon idj, I have just mapped the absolute crap out of it in vdj. It’s a toy but it’s a fun toy, and if you replace the knobs for the eq, and the volume and crossfader knobs, its a useable toy just a little bigger than a nanopad, so you could set it up on your lap to have a play anytime you feel like it, couple that with a netbook and you are set…

you can do it in vdj, just go into config –> options –> scrolling –> then choose “inverted”

I wouldn’t get the scs4dj if using software, if you ever want to hook it up you lose the screen and the soundcard, which are the only selling points of it, so it would be less capable than a basic mixtrack
