    vinyl was the best thing for djing…. It meant that posers wouldn’t spend all that cash on tunes, and not everyone had the same songs due to limited releases.

    Having cheap controllers mean there is going to be more supply than demand in a couple of years, as anyone with a dual core computer, the internet, a $150 controller and a bit torrent client can call themselves a dj… That was almost my weekly budget for vinyl in the early 2000’s and it got me around 6 tracks depending on the releases I could get at the time… People that love dance music will find a way to do it….

    I think that was taken the wrong way… screw the analogy…

    IMO if you have an entire set planned you are too limited and will get nervous if it isn’t well recieved or you don’t eq exactly as you did when practicing. That isnt to say have a couple of three track mixes that work off each other as it is really impossible for you not to as a dj, but the tracks inbetween should be left open and if you end up in the right place play the three tracks together… The longer you dj the more mixes you have to draw from to know what works…

    And never ever play a track that you don’t know, but after a while of mixing you can usually automatically mix after hearing the song a couple of times, I find if I hear it more than six or seven times the newness of the track is lost and I don’t have as much fun mixing it… That said I am very picky when buying tracks so I know everything I have.

    You need the either the audio 8 or audio 10 if you want to connect four inputs. the difference between them is the audio 2 has 4 mono outputs for headphones and master or channel 1 & 2. The audio 4 and above have inputs and outputs… To run timecode you need 1 stereo input (2 mono) per device.

    The number in the name corresponds to how many mono ins and outs the soundcard has. eg the audio 10 has 10 mono ins and 10 mono outs, it is suitable for running 5 timecodes… They all sound the same though in theory the audio 4 should be the loudest as it doesn’t need to share the power from the usb between all the outputs, unless you connect the ac adapter.

    you can get ’em brand new that cheap with traktor pro 2 online… you may as well just keep it as a backup, or cut a third off the price and try again.

    I think practicing every set before you play it live just sets you up for failure… If we stick with the golf analogy, it’s like planning out the exact position you want to hit the ball… you could be tiger woods and actually do it, but most of the time you will probably miss, and you are not factoring in other variables that could affect your game on the day… maybe it’s windy and want’s to blow you off coarse (the crowd doesn’t like your pre prepared setlist), maybe your on after a player dominates then gives you the finger (some little showboat plays a peak set early in the night and dowsn’t respect you enough to close properly), or raining (no one is dancing yet), your caddy is a no show (cant press sync), or you break you clubs in a freak buggy crash (equiptment fails).

    You are better off practicing the different techniques you use in all different conditions, and be ready for anything (know your tunes and play what comes to mind in the moment) there is less pressure and much more reward.

    But it is always good to watch yourself on tv after practicing so you get another perspective to improve your game and get feedback from others (record your mixes).

    If you are using a dvd you would first need to burn it to a different codec, the main ones are AVI, MPEG, MP4, FLV, VOB.

    then just write down the time the sampler plays and load the video on a deck… find the sample in vdj. if you want the sample to beatsync play a track at the same speed you want the sample to record at… then right click on the bpm button on the skin to open the cbg editor and select “copy from other deck” this will copy the tempo from the dance track.

    next set a loop over the sample, then press record on a sample slot… this will save the beatgrid information and set the sample to the perfect size so you can later loop or sync it if you wish…. when you are done remember to save it using the little bulls eye as it will be deleted when you exit the software if you forget.

    the only difference between them is vdj has a more inviting skin for beginners, but they both do exactly the same thing which is play tunes, however, traktor has better effect intigration, but vdj has many more advanced options under the surface.

    Traktors effects are locked, and it doesn’t natively support vst’s… you can however use a program like JACK to wire the sound into a DAW like ableton to use more effects… The other two options you have that support VST’s natively are VDJ and Torq… I believe Torq can run VSTi’s however VDJ can only run standard VST’s.

    VSTi’s are more indepth higher quality effects but most cost more than any dj software on the market. VST’s are more basic and not a processor hungry, but there is hundreds of free ones on the interweb.

    If you use windows dont waste your time with the filter in vdj it’s absolutley terrible… get “quad byte filter” and paste the .dll in [my documents –> virtual dj –> plugins –> sound effects]

    then use this script for it…

    FX_SELECT_BTN
    toggle “filter-effect” & var “filter-effect” 1 ? effect ‘qb_filter’ active on & effect ‘qb_filter’ slider 2 70% & effect ‘qb_filter’ slider 3 50% & blink 400ms : effect ‘qb_filter’ active off

    FX_PARAM_1
    var “filter-effect” 1 ? param_multiply 0.7% & effect ‘qb_filter’ slider 3 : param_multiply 1% & effect slider 1

    if the led doesn’t blink when the filter is on, map this to the led.

    LED_FX_SELECT_BTN
    var “filter-effect” 1 ? : blink 400ms : effect active ? on : off

    looks like traktor is the problem then, also 14 bit midi sends 256 Control Change messages, not 128, it seems that traktor has not implimented the 14bit midi the controllers offer. VDJ ftw! :p

    did you try it on 6%… I have a reloop jockey 2 working in vdj, the fader is 14bit and only about 3 inches long but the resolution is 0.01 at 6%… maybe also look at the reloop terminal 4 when it gets released as the fader is fairly large with large jogs. It should be a pretty good unit to learn on if the push to kill eq knobs feel good to use.

    VCI-400 can now be used as an external mixer with a firmware update, I think it is your best bet but the jpckey 3 is also pretty good if you only want two channels, the only shortfalls of the reloop are the cue buttons dont have the best action, there is a big click which delays the trigger unless you smash it down, and the led rings around the encoders are hard to see unless you are high above the unit. In saying that everything on the reloop is high quality which can’t be said about the S4.

    I agree that the denon is too small to be used properly.

    Traktor is retarded when it comes to jogwheels I’m not sure why they are so exclusive in their support, but the jockey 3 and the VCI-400’s jogs work perfectly in vdj with a small tweek of the registry if you ever choose to go down that route instead.
