I think the VCI-400 should tick all the boxes soon if serato make an upgrade path from intro to itch, still you can’t use the jogs properly in traktor… what you will find is native instruments don’t support hardware used in itch, so you pretty much have to pick one of the two, vdj either does or can support anything so there is no problem there.

that looks fantastic for some fun on a train, or if they make it compatible with the new numark idj thing could be quite good for a bedroom setup… still dont trust iOS and touchscreens for a gig though

actually I think this is wrong… this is the numbers i came up with in the past that actually work for changing the bpm 0.01%… then again this is for a button not a slider… I HATE MATHS!!!

    100% – 0.0000390625
    50% – 0.000078125
    25% – 0.00015625
    12% – 0.0032552083333333333333333333333333
    6% – 0.0065104166666666666666666666666667

it all comes down to how many steps of midi you have on your fader… standard 7bit midi has 128 steps so with a little math you can figure out the pitch resolution… at 6% pitch range for a 100bpm track you have a resolution of 0.009375bpm, how you work it out is at 6% pitch range you actually use double that in the range because its 6% + 6% = 12% then divide by the amount of midi steps on the fader 128…. The last variable you need to account for is the actual bpm of the track, that is the result for 100bpm if you want say 128 bpm you times it by 128% or 1.28 in decimal

    12 / 128 = 0.09375 = 0.009375bpm resolution @ 100bpm

I’m not very good at maths so not sure why but you have to move the decimal over to get the result… lol

    12 / 128 x 1.28 = 0.12 = 0.012bpm resolution @ 128bpm

14 bit midi sends double the messages as 7bit so instead of 128 messages it sends 256 that means you get the same resolution at double the pitch range

    24 / 256 x 1.28 = 0.12 = 0.012bpm resolution @ 128bpm

If i were you I would wait for the reloop terminal series to be released and see how they feel to use as they are made of metal and have 100mm long pitch faders…

btw I could be wrong about the formula… as i said im not great at maths, hope it helps you to understand how it works though 😉

the difference is night and day when comparing the two… the dj2 is a very basic controller for learning on, as you noted the pitch fader is incredibly small although on 6% pitch range in vdj it gives 0.01% resolution but it is pretty hard to beatmatch with because of its size… that said it’s not impossible with micro adjustments.

the jogs are very loose when spinning which is something to consider… their resolution is 128 steps.. I can bend and scratch on them fine.

The thing you missed is the transport buttons… they are horrible, my play button hardly ever works now…

The dj3 is a whole ‘nother animal, everything on it is improved…the jogs are larger, have torque adjustment and something like 2000 or 3000 ticks per revolution…they feel amazing to use..

All the knobs, sliders and encoders are great quality and feel like a mixer should…. one criticism is the led rings are a little hard to see unless you are directly above the unit…

The buttons are all different, they have rubberised pads, although im not fond of the action as there is a big click before it triggers, but they’re fine to use…

for me it’s the perfect size making no compramise to fit a small form factor like the denon.

I definately recommend the dj3 in its price range… if you are on a budget the dj2 is acceptable for a starter.

i meant to imply it only refers to static platters with no jog position feedback… you could probably manage on an ns6 or pioneer ddj if you really wanted to… although I’m not sure if there is any sticker drift associated with these controllers.

The only thing you cant do is beatjuggle… the rest of the techniques are the same, check out dj angelo on youtube for great tutorials.

it begs the question, are they dropping the price on a second generation using inferior components to regain the loss in sale price, or cutting their losses against the competition? whatever it means it is probably ushering in the end of quality mid range controllers only to be replaced with disposable ones like the S2 and mixtrack…

    Thankyou native instruments…

CUe and Play… it jumps to the cue when you press the button down, and plays on release..

I don’t see the point of having it personally, although I guess it’s to replicate releasing a record.

To the O.P. get the reloop

vdj natively supports everything on this list:
    http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/VirtualDJ%20Controllers.html

here is one with pretty pictures and if it has a vdj le logo that means it comes with vdj:
    http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html

I say vdj because the core of the program has none of the limitations traktor has, every midi or HID controller can be supported with full resolution and features be they touchpads, jogs, motorised platters, RGB leds etc… and that seems to be the current direction of the controller industry.

The thing that vdj lacks is intigration of all the possibilities but they are there and accessable by all, and using the script options you can put djtt mappings to shame. The last thing is the skin looks a bit crap but you can make your own if you are graphically inclined, and no one knows yet what the skin will look like on release of vdj8…

    @ DJ D’Meaner
if you are using the NS7 as you picture suggests another technique is just brake the motor… not sure if you can adjust the start stop time on the NS7, but my tables have it set at around 500ms which leaves a nice sound trail. It’s good to use this at the end of a phrase.

But all that aside the best way is to eq the tracks in and out, and never have two basslines or vocals playing at the same time as D-Jam suggested.

my vote for a standard controller is on the hopefully soon to be released Vestax VCI – 480

It would have the 400’s build and layout, with the 380’s jogs and pads, then there would never be a reason to upgrade unless a slightly larger one came out with every led on the unit rgb for ultimate software feedback.

what do you want the apc to do specifically.. It is designed to allow you to play a live set using ableton audio clips. If you want to do something different you can use VDJ. The NS7 is mapped natively, but you would have to download the mapping for the apc and tweek it to suit what you are after. You can also rewire ableton to VDJ as a slave, so vdj controls the transport of ableton through the NS7 exactly like the bridge, but you lose the ability to record your actions like you get in serato.

If you want to give it a try download vdj home activate the Pro trial and the NS7 will be good to go.
