MemberIf you know some javascript you can do quite a bit with mixxx in terms of mapping and skinning and there is a lot of work that is being done to get mixxx level with the other programs… The problem is that it is open source so relying on people spending their free time coding it, this means updates take a long time to be rolled out.

MemberIf your into mapping the touch pad is great as it is absolute but sends 0x00 when you release it, I made it into a multi effects slider in VDJ Pro that operates like glitch with some advanced mapping… Other than that it’s average quality but definitely better than a mixtrack.
You should save a few more dollars and get the Pioneer DDJ-S(e)X It has absolutely everything anyone could ever want!

Membermap everything to it LOL
I would get a good VST filter like “philta” and map that to the filter knob.
the encoders would be loop size unshifted and loop move while shifted and looping otherwise track jump the size of the loop selected. the other encoder’s not sure about
I would get a VST reverb like “arts acoustic reverb”, an echo/delay “ramp_delay” is nice and bitcrusher and hard map those to the effects section as they are the most useful IMO.
The grid would be expanded by using the smaller buttons to shift it so I had 8 hot cues, 8 different sized “rollit” loop rolls. on another grid I would have the “efx_1000 delay” effect mapped and the last would be the “beatslicer”.
I would use the lower velocity sensitive pads for transport, effects, and sampler in their respective hard shifts.
then map jogfx to the jog wheels. for things like a pitched loop roll, filter, delay, pingpong delay, etc…
by that stage you should have run out of controls. I like to have everything hard mapped so the control does the same thing everytime, Im not keen on using default style mapping as you can’t control multiple parameters on one control that way and when you incorporate VST’s there is usually a few sliders that need to move at once in varying degrees.

MemberI wouldn’t ever get an S2/4 as they feel like toys on par with a Mixtrack… And anything on the S4 can be mapped to any other controller… But I’d go with the Reloop TM4.. It is the best feeling in it’s price range IMO.. The VCI-400 Is great but I’m not a fan of the faders and love that you can beatmatch on the TM4 due to the large 14bit midi pitch fader… The best advice is to try them for yourself to decide

Memberthis is why anyone who produces music to be played on ipod’s/radio/TV will have 3 or 4 different types of speakers when producing and doing the final mixdown as these playback formats sound very different to a club system.
Hip Hop is the same, it’s most likely going to be played in a car or on a big home stereo so should have the final mixdown similar speakers, as any decently loud system will make the track sound much brighter than your flat studio monitors.
When your mastering though always keep in the back of your mind that less is more. If you don’t redline or compress your audio too much you will have a dynamic sounding track. And if you want a sound louder try turning down all the other noises and make some space to hear it in the mix before turning it up.
Also a decent spectrum analyser VST will save you a lot of time and help you to fill al the frequencies with the appropriate level of sound.

Memberlet Micl show you the way… can’t believe this only has 1275 views. It’s a great vid that makes the information incredibly accessible to anyone. Watch it and tell your friends, this guy deserves some recognition for his work.

here is another better vid that has an incredibly inventive way of explaining beatmatching.

Memberit’s the same as USB, but you do need a midi to usb converter to get it in your computer.
The only real use for the midi on it is to map the crossfader if you are doing video performances, but you could run the whole thing as a midi controller if you wanted, but then you have just wasted all the expensive engineered circuitry that makes the Xone sound so good.

Memberyou also want an “effects send/return”. With it you can hook up things like the pioneer EFX, RMX, Kaoss Pad and route the signal to individual channels.
If you really want to go all out you can use a windows netbook running ableton for effects and run that through the effects loop 😉
The best $1000ish mixer IMO is the allen & heath xone 92 as it sounds fantastic, has 4 bands of eq to really shape the sound, midi messages on almost all the controls and the filter is the best in the business.

MemberSpend the money on the best videocard you can afford. Then in VDJ Pro you can use freeframe effects from Video editing and VJ software in all their glory. There is a large online community of developers for free and paid freeframe effects of which you can use in VDJ Pro.
The one thing Serato has over VDJ is the transitions are generally better, but their is an SDK available to make your own if you know any programming languages.

MemberIt’s like comparing a rolls royce to a toyota. Sure toyota “numark” have some good cars in their lineup (the x5 is one of them) but it’s not a prestigious brand as most of what they release is pretty poor. “Rolls Royce” (RANE 56-57) on the other hand is heavy, bulky and plain, but the performance and quality is astounding in comparison to a toyota. They will both do the same job although the RANE will probably sound better (having never heard the X5) and certainly costs more.

MemberYou can sync it using the midi clock and “JACK” the sound from traktor into ableton, don’t know how well it works if you change the pitch but it should be okay for a constant tempo… The thing is that if you are doing this no doubt you will be syncing in traktor, then using the eq3 and the effects of ableton for the final mixing.. So really you should probably just focus on ableton as traktor will only be playing the track and sending the midi clock.
If you do decide to use both get zestoi’s free midimasher app. I have had many conversations with him about it and he has set it up as a hub for all your controllers, but to further that you can send some controls on the same controller to ableton and some to traktor as well as virtual shift layers to do it all for you. It is a very good program and Pete loves helping people and talking about his creation.

Memberfair enough that most people won’t buy a set, but every club in the world will because pioneer have made the more advanced technology accessible to anyone “atleast in the preparation stages which are becoming ever increasingly more important as people fail to learn to beatmatch”.
The thing that most interests me is the laptop connectivity and whether or not these things send midi/HID over wifi as I like you wouldn’t want to give up my software, but would love to be able to use the players as controllers and be able to connect easily. I haven’t read anything confirming or denying it though.

MemberTraktor’s beatmasher is the same as serato’s roll…
@terry for VDJ rollit is the business, It allows you to chain it behind or infront of other effects aswell as being able to modify the playback speed so you can make a perfect replica of the pioneer cdj-400 roll with your jogs. If you don’t want anything fancy “looproll” is perfect accept that you can’t chain it, but it gives you perfect loops everytime… If you want non quantized sizes like 3/4 or 3/2 just turn the quantize button off and it still gives perfect loops although you do need to map the specific slider positions eg.
effect ‘looproll’ slider 2 32.5%

MemberYes it does… Now anyone with an apple/android tablet or smartphone can manage their library anywhere and connect straight into the cdj. Pioneer are setting a new standard that everyone will follow as clubs will get these in their arsenal soon enough. These give all the best bits of software to everyone and make it accessible to any dj who will come into contact with them. The best thing is you can sort your library on the train or on your sofa using their app… I have a windows tablet to do the same for VDJ but it is a hassle to transfer across between the tablet and my laptop, this looks simple! Not a fan of the waveforms and sync but the connectivity is spot on!

MemberIf NI was in partnership with stienburg for “traktor dj mixer”I wonder why they never implemented VST’s as stienburg are the creators of the VST standard?
