ParticipantI use a laptop (Traktor) but my gear (Denon) has its own music management software that works on an iPad and I’m seriously considering going down this route if it agrees with my M.O.
Marco makes an important point above, you can plug more stuff into a laptop and they’re generally more powerful than a tablet. My Denons would handle the music processing and my mixer has fx on it already, the iPad would simply be a music display tool, so power and usb ports wouldn’t be a problem in my particular case. This is worth bearing in mind if you’re considering tablet DJing, what exactly is doing your sound processing and where’s your storage? The point is that laptops are far from old fashioned when it comes to DJ work, and given their connectivity they have far more utility than a tablet anyway. Do your own thing if it works for you 🙂

ParticipantOdd that you don’t want a Dell, I’m using a Latitude business model and I can’t fault it. 4 usb ports too. Refurbed one, cost me 500 quid and it runs TSP 2 @ 2ms latency.
4-500 notes should get you a pretty decent one, go for an i5 with 4gb RAM. Hdd not important if you already got a ssd to drop in it. 15″ screens are about right, DJ booths were never made with laptops in mind so any bigger will be awkward to shoe in. Mines a 1080p display but I’m not sure if you’ll get that for less than 500.
Lenovo get mentioned a lot in these sorts of threads if that helps.Stazbumpa
ParticipantMy tuppence:
I started DDJing on Traktor and stuck with it when I got my uber setup mainly because switching to Serato would mean buying a soundcard that I didn’t need with Traktor. Simple economics for me, I like using Traktor however I haven’t used anything else so I’m not pretending its the best.

ParticipantAs a rule I stick key lock on when I’m mixing anything more than 3-4 bpm difference. Back in the old days of vinyl a drastic pitch change made it sound like your string section had been plunged underwater.

ParticipantSomething to do with the 2khz signal from the 3700’s, no idea why but according to the Denon forums Traktor updated beyond 2.0.something won’t read it.
Stazbumpa
ParticipantYou can use the 3700’s in hybrid mode with TSP 2, however from what I’ve read online so far it won’t work beyond Traktor v2.0.x
I could be wrong, but that’s my knowledge so far.

ParticipantI use 320 cbr @ 44.1khz wherever available, all my vinyl rips are in this format too. Anything beyond this is overkill on 99.9% of club setups in my very honest opinion. Hard disk space is not really an issue these days so you won’t gain much by having everything in v0, whereas the mp3 vs flac/wav file size difference is far more pronounced.

ParticipantI deal with them by being polite until they start getting aggressive and then all bets are off. Women tend to announce you’re “a shit dj”, which they only ever do once because my comeback is quite caustic.
Guys can be more physically aggressive, had more than one occasion where they reach into the booth and try and grab something. My mic is usually applied to their forehead at this point. Bottom line, be polite until they stop being so then just ignore them. If they get stupid then nip it in the bud.

ParticipantI’ve been using the usb 2 version for years, the case has saved my collection more than once. Even if it only lives in your laptop bag then it’s still that bit more rugged.

Have a gander at these, the waterproof casing is also shock proof which is a must on the road. Adata do a newer, better version which is also on that website.

ParticipantThe NS6 looks like a good shout, Numark make good stuff anyway so you will have no problem with quality. I went with Denon too, but I was seriously considering the NS7 II at one point. Anyway, get mixing and revel in your mistakes because that’s how you learn.
And make sure you have FUN 🙂

ParticipantI know several DJs who harp on about using Pioneer stuff, for example, but they all share one trait in common: not one of them has had to pay for that gear, it’s all installed in the club. If you practise you can make even the most basic gear sing and you will sound amazing.

ParticipantLatest version of Engine is 1.1.1 of that’s helpful. The waveform is indeed clunky, however playback on the Denons is flawless. I’ve not detected any issues myself with regard to beat gridding etc, but what I have noticed is that Engine/Denon players don’t like unbranded usb sticks so I advise you to get something by Sandisk or Kingston. According to Denon, they regard the hybrid mode to track better for Serato than Traktor, although I’ve had no problems myself, so that might be worth a look if you can make it work for you.
Apart from that, these decks are an enormouse amount of fun, I’m in the UK so the price you found them for appears to be roughly half what I had to pay :-/ US retail price was initially $999 per deck, in England it was £899 (mine were 800 each) which is about $1400 or thereabouts.

ParticipantI’m using the 3900’s, best deck out there imvho. I’m using mine with Traktor though, so I’ll help you as best I can. First question is what are using Engine on? Laptop, iPad?
