It does depend on the crowd, which is where the DJ crowd reading skills come in, but generally speaking I find that most gigs I play require a spread of music, new, newish, and the some classics. Playing brand spanking new stuff all night only really works when you’re entertaining other DJ’s or, more likely, trying to impress them. The crowd are what counts so entertain and, where possible, educate them. Dig out those classic tunes!

I make it up as I’m going. I have playlists for different genres and/or stuff I know will work, but that’s about all the planning I do. I played an hour slot on an internet radio station last week and even then I only knew for sure what I would play first, the rest of it was made up on the spot.

I plan to the point that I have certain types of music in certain folders, but beyond that I kind of make it up on the night. Requests always throw rigid playlists out of the window anyway, and I like to be eclectic. There’s nothing worse than a DJ you can set your watch by.

Frosh and 2SHAE are on the right lines. Quick, sharp mixing and using cue points all point to a better hip hop set than long mixes. I use my technics when I play so can scratch a bit plus I like to use loops on Traktor which helps no end when you want to extend the short intro of a track coming in and you can then cut across and let the vocals kick in. Never underestimate the power of looping beats in a hip hop set.

I run Traktor on an Acer (don’t laugh!) lappy with an old T4200 dual core cpu and 4Gb of RAM. Everything works just fine, I’m playing roughly 5 hours per night straight. The only thing I would definitely recommend is more RAM and Win 7 over Vista (I’m hoping to swap over myself soon).
