You, sir, have earned your moniker – “Vintage”.

What are your thoughts on the ZED-10FX?

I like the fact that it has a built-in DI box and USB interface. The only thing is it doesn’t have graphic EQ, but it does have sweepable mids.

I was also looking at a Mackie PROFX8, but I’ve heard mixed reviews on it (and I generally avoid anything with ‘pro’ in the name).

That DL series stuff looks really sweet, but a bit out of my price range at the moment.

Just wanted to add the gig went great! So good, in fact, the headline act asked me to do sound the next night at a different venue.

One thing I’ve clearly learned is that I need better mics…

I managed to borrow some SM58s for the second show, which helped, but I decided I should purchase something more to my liking for future use – so I decided on some Audix OM2s.

Also looking to upgrade my mixer to something with effects in the future.

Thanks again everyone for the sound advice (pun intended).

    Thanks DussT,

You’re right, no effects, but I don’t think it will be an issue. Good point about the condenser mic. The headliner is a somewhat well known blues-folk artist in the area, so it’s quite possible they could have their own mic.

And yeah, 15s are it, but go big or go home right?

Worth noting the VCI-100 is natively supported in the new Virtual DJ 8 (meaning plug it in and it just works).

    Traktor is good software though.

I think it depends on the venue. I’ve been to such places where immediately after the rock show ends, a dance-friendly crowd filters in. So I think I would judge the situation depending on whether or not you’re playing to the same audience.

    Oops, I meant “not cheap”.

    Dammit, where’s the edit button?

PCMusic is one such system you may want to look into. It’s not a cheap, but I think it would do what you said.

I still cringe when I hear “skins”. I never got that. Entire industries of people labouriously crafting their software to look like … well … something else LOL.

If you’ve ever used a controller like the Stanton SCS.3, then you understand the value of controller-specific skins.

No he is not. If you take very good TVs of course and not a 500 bucks best buy thing… But for example the top of the line Sonys have actually pretty decent soundbars installed.

Sorry to continue the off-topic discussion here, but that simply isn’t true of most brands on the market. Sony’s very high end may be the lone exception. I know what I’m talking about here because selling TVs is part of my day job.

So unless this guy has one of said TVs, in my opinion a set of AV40s would be a major step up in terms of sound quality for TV watching.

And to get back on topic: to me owning studio monitors for DJ practice is just senseless gear lust. Unless you’re planning on doing some producing or opening a recording studio you don’t need reference quality speakers. What your music is going to sound like when you play in public will be totally different from the studio experience anyways. The extra money you’d spend on home monitors would be better spent on gear you could use out. If bass is your main issue with the AV40s, then a small subwoofer could easily be added to the setup for much less cost than upgrading to even modestly-priced monitors.

Imho, they are speakers. They sound like they would for the price. Just remember that their heritage is in multimedia sound for a computer. So gaming, youtube movies and such. Obviously that means you can use them with your TV if you like too, but I am not too sure it’s gonna enhance your TV experience all that much with todays sound quality in the TVs.

Surely you’re joking about that. Even today’s top-of-the-line $4,000 4K TVs have way worse sound than your average $150 consumer shelf stereo. If anything, sound quality in TVs has gotten nothing but worse since the shift to flat HD panels.

Yes, but the OP isn’t looking for reference monitors and neither am I.

I know real monitors sound better, but I don’t want/need them to practice DJing at home.

I own them. I like them a lot, but I’m hard pressed to recommend them unless you know what you’re getting into.
