thanks for the interesting perspective. gave me some things to think about.
ya know, if only the redundancy was things we all wanted, like a really nice crossfader(or any other control that frequent gets requested) then I suppose it would be good. The problem is that redundancy seems to fall into the category of things we “don’t want” like cheap faders, and the rubber buttons that lean from side to side and take way to much force to press. It actually goes deeper than that, because of this simple fact, we all became DJs to express our own “Unique” selves through how “we” personally hear the music. We buy/bought this gear and software with the hope of re-mixing on the fly and adding our own unique creativity and sensibilty to the mix. It’s going to be awfully difficult to stand out at the car show, if we all driving vibes and matrices. Maybe it’s so burried beneath the thoughts of all the $ we spend on this stuff, that it’s only a subconscious thing, but on some level we’re all starting to feel that there is very little “uniqueness” and therefore little creativity in what we’re doing. i think the monotony is even more evident in turntablism culture; it’s hyperbolic at this point.spektakx

I am interested in the controller you’re using. I’m assuming its something you’ve put together yourself. Tell me some more about it.
I’ve been at this for a whiiiiiile. it would take a whole lot more than that to bother me. i’ve heard more ish talked than you could imagine. Yet meanwhile, my work, my face, and my name(s) continue to turn up when people talk about controllers and the future of DJ productions. I’m serious, if you’ve seen something that you think is dope done with a controller, show me the link. I wanna see that stuff.
Many people who have come to appreciate what I can do started out just like you, doubting it, and/or perceiving it in a different way than it was intended. To put my work into context, everything I do and have done has been to lead up to “mobile gear”, battery powered mobile, take it to college in your backpack so you can go to your friends house between classes and scratch, grab it out the trunk of your car when you stay the night at your girl’s house and your TTs are at home, mobile. This is what I’ve been working towards. No, it’s not perfectly refined yet, because I’m literally defining it as we speak(type, haha) Know why you don’t see big names doing tricks on midi? cause that shit is difficult, that’s why. Those jog wheel are defined by a specific resolution, which means, that even though it’s a circle, it’s still broken down into a specific number of positions, and the track, or “playhead” as it might be thought of, “Jumps” from one position to the next. This is why scratching and juggling are difficult with midi. But I feel, that if I make the right controller and explain to guys where it fits into their lives(see the above situations) then they will want one.spektakx
MemberI updated the video in the first post, with a more “complex” juggle. let me know what you kids ‘tink ’bout it!

This is Dope, but I diasgree that midi controllers wills Fail…
Thank you,
of course, I’m generalizing about the “failure” of midi. To what extent, and how the failure will manifest itself remains to be see. I am certain that, at some point, “Units not selling” will force everyone in the production pipeline to massively rethink their strategies, both on design and implementation.
One recent example of units not selling is the NI s2. This is the perfect instance of what I’m talking about. The S4 sold 15000 units, great right, and I don’t know how many S2s sold(me talking about stuff like this in a public forum has scraed so many people, that I’m no longer on the inside) What we do know is this. They re-priced the S2. So we know that they were not selling as hoped for or expected. This isn’t the only time this has happened. The Numark V7s are another example.
My assertion is that fear and suspicion, on the part of the buyer, not lack of money, was/is the driving force behind the failure of these products. Not fear, from a sense of the device not working properly, so much; but instead the fear the we were being sold something else that wouldn’t fully live up to our expectations “workflow-wise”, and that the same manufacturer would only be coming back to us months later, asking us to buy their latest and greatest “upgraded” system.spektakx
Memberif it is possible, get somewhere where you can see those in person. making decisions on the presumed “feel” and “build quality” etc.. may leave with something less thatn what you wanted.
I would tell you exactly what I think of each of those, but you wouldn’t believe me anywaysMay 15, 2012 at 3:15 pm in reply to: MixVibes Release CrossDJ For iPad – The World's First Professional DJing App #1004449spektakx
Memberthe beat-grids are hot. it’s cool to have an almost full DJ software on the iPad though, and it really mixes and holds mixes quite well.
It’s definitely as close to Pro mixing as we’ve seen yet on the iPad, namely because of the waveform being together so you can really “watch” the mix.
I think a lot of peeps are going to love this app.spektakx
Memberone of the best nights in my life was london electricity in new york city. they actually had a separate room and the dj was mixing in “onto” them…the hallway between the two rooms was intense

Memberoh how I miss the days of raving, when the only person who would dare make a request was the cuties who actually had good taste in music. where in the span of 4 hours there might be two gals bold enough to make request, and they actually requested great tracks. this modern, what I call “nascar culture” where they think they paid their $ so they get to go down to pit row, and tell the mechanic which tires to use, really sucks.
bring back the underground, just say no to these rock concerts masquerading as raves. yuckk!! either listen to what the dj is playing or leave, you got a computer, go start your own party!spektakx

So I would never use it as a midi controller when I dj at a party. If there is anyone using there denon 3700 0r 1200 with virtual dj without any problems please contact me on how you are doing it.
My second problem is that I found the greatest MIdi controller for a mobile dj, but one glitch, it has the worst jog wheels for scratching so i sent it back. Now I am looking for a new controller that has the same features but with a worthy scratch and NO LIMITED EDITION software (but if it has everything I am willing to pay for pro), these are the features I NEED:•Uses USB Flash Drive and as a media source (I REALLY NEED THIS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO AT A PARTY AND YOUR LAPTOP DIES & DON’T SAY IT WONT!) and both Jog Wheels plays from the same USB
•Auto Fader Start (in both cross and Line Fader)
•An independant mixer with the ability to plug in 2 external devices (turntable or CDJ’s)
•MIDI mappable where i can map all the buttons so i can stay off the keyboard.
•Auto Touch Rewind, Auto Cue, A. CUE, CUP? or whatever it is that they call it (the ability to touch the jog wheel and the song starts Playback at the last cue point no matter what part of the song your in.)
•natively supported software for MIDI control either Serato Itch or Virtual Dj Pro, (It has to mix videos also so Traktor is out of the question)
•Very Good Jogwheels for Scratching and a good soundcard to handle the external devices (turnatble, cdj etc.)
•On Board Effects, loops and Cues that work with the USB and midi software
•Auto – Relay
•Microphone inputs Preferably 2
This is the Ultimate Midi Controller, please dont say nothing comes with all of these features becausee as I said previously I had a midi controller with all these things it was the American Audio Versadeck but the scratching was lousy. I haven’s seen a better one yet, If you know of one please email me the name at nighttimeent@yahoo.com.
Thank You for letting me vent!I’m assuming that you are talking about this
http://www.bax-shop.nl/digitale-dj-controller/stanton-scs8dj-dj-controller/product-details.html#reviews
Since you have the versadeck, yu can look into it’s patronage a bit, and you will see that the scs4dj is built on the same foundation. The information on the above link is well, there isn’t any haha, but one might guesstimate that some of the features you are asking about might materialize on this new “scs8dj”
maybe you should try and contact stanton about beta-testing this new controller, I hear they lost their top guyspektakx
Member@steelo, hey bro, I hate to bother ya, but I really wann get this juggle stuff lined out as best as possible, and so I appreciate your comment. if you get the chance, can you post a link or two of some midi controller juggles that you think are good. i’d like something “complex” not “basic” as you said mine were, but I’m searching in youtube and can’t find any that are much more than “manual loops” and I really can’t find any where they change patterns without going to a new hotcue or something. i think maybe my search results from the iPad app are different(it does that, I don’t know why) but yea, I’d appreciate the help. thanks in advance 🙂

Memberwhat’s up with the CH46 in your profile pic? are you in the marine corps or navy (maybe the army has those now, I guess)
Personally, I love CDJs. I love, love, LOVE PIO CDJS. and the smaller Denons, too…but What I love most of all is that by the end of this year, there will be many Windows tablets quite capable of running VDJ 8, and the ease of use, and convenience of a system like that will simply create a whole new perspective on how the modern DJ or DJ/Producer not only “works” but “LIVES” cause remember you gotta live with this stuff. It needs a big table, and hopefully it’s own room, or at least it’s own area of a room. You need to be able to put it away if you’ll be away from it. I once bought two brand new M447s only to see one broken the next day because my wife’s kid had decided to “show her friends my dj stuff” Things like that happen.
It may sound strange to describe quickly switching back and forth between my production-then DJ-then general computing, all without disconnecting or moving anything, as exciting..but it is.
If you are new to this, you will discount my advise, and say that “I want this stuff” “i’ll use it all the time” “I’ll make a place for it”, but I’ve been dealing with these issues since 1994, and what I’m telling you is from all these years of experience.
CDJs perform better than midi, but CDJs do have prohibitive aspects that may inhibit your opportunities to use them and practice, soooooo…in the long run, midi is better. In todays world, if I were going to mix, I would get a Twitch or vci300.
Want to scratch…as odd as it sounds, considering the automated CF curve, the DJ controllers are the best.spektakx
Memberthe trick is to put “jump to active hotcue” on the jogwheel, and then make a modifier to turn it on or off.
Need help with the TSI, just ask. twitter probably the quickest way to get my attention…peace….spektakx
Membermy greatest joy in DJing is providing my friends and family with music that they personally enjoy. My sis loves al the CA hip hop that wouldn’t be part of her day without my influence and work(mix cds) I also make bluegrass CDs for my dad, classic rock and books on tape CDs for momz, and I keep the cousins buzzin with rock/rap mixes which they seem to find very refreshing compared to the current state of pop hop.

You’re Welcome,
I posted this comment on the video, but thought I would put it here for your readers as well,“I’m not sure if Numark plans to market the IDJ Pro as a housing/case/home for the iPad. I am certain, however, that when I returned my modified IDJ LIve to Simon Bangs, I included a hand-written explanation of the insights I talk about here. I also described how to create a “passive” integrated speaker. I have also held back some design insights that would be very valuable to those that implement them, and costly to those that don’t.”
