Ok thanks rjwhite41. I’ve decided to play what I like out of what they’ve given me because i’m going to have to cut out about half of the songs & i’ll play literaly a few they haven’t given me but I think they might like. If I haven’t played one of their favourites then they’ll probably come up and request it. I’ll try and play a bit of all the genres they’ve given me too.

Ok thanks for your reply DJ Menno. I know from booking DJs for a private party before they ask what I want & i’d give them general genres & a few songs, not every song for the entire night, just wasn’t expecting it after the feedback I got from my last gig. I’m not worried about mixing as much as what I play.

I’m only cheap at the moment because i’ve read you charge what you think your worth & i’m a beginner & I will make mistakes & I just wan’t to get out playing at the moment to build my confidence & experience. I’m hiring equipment cheap off of a relative but I definitely will charge more with experience. I don’t think I would of got the gig if I wasn’t charging what i’ve charged & it feels like a bit of a knock down but i’ll try & be more positive about it and think “ultimately they’ve chosen me”.

Sorry, for the late reply. I’ve been so busy learning how to post edit my mix. Thanks for the interest 🙂
It went fantastic! There’s too many positives to tell you about but the gist of it was loads of people said I was amazing, everyone was dancing the whole night, people couldn’t believe it was my first time, people were coming up after telling me how good I was & i only made a few mistakes, I was in my element! At first people were complaining they wanted something more dancey straight away after about 2 songs lol, but it didn’t knock me because I knew I was building up tension & I had so many dance songs i wanted to play, I think they thought it was going to be a boring night lol, once I started playing the dance songs they didn’t stop dancing! I got to play all the genres in my list with success,a few songs requested that were worth playing I had on my desktop PC but not the laptop which was a bit frustrating. I’m going to arrange an event & invitite all of the people that were there,so I can get more practise & experience. I have learnt from some of my mistakes by listening to my mix so I know where to improve. Thanks so much for all that helped me get this far & this website & how to digital DJ fast video course! 🙂

Just realised during a practise 1 of my apple lossless files has become corrupt even though I have transfered over with an external hard drive, & it worked before! I’m going to go thee mp3 route

Thanks for you replys 🙂 this is what I take from them, tell me id i’m right or wrong about anything, so the 1st hour you suggest playing a mixture of genres but low energy etc. Do you mean literaly the 1st hour before the suprise wen i’ll just be playing background music or the 1st hour when he arrives & the party officialy starts?

Instead of strictly playing 1 star the 1sr hour , 2tar the 2nd hour etc, you both think i should progressively increase the energy but within each hour go up or down a bit energy/tempo wise? So for eg 2nd hour play 2 & 3 stars going up or down within the hour,3rd hour play 3 or 4 stars going up or down in the hour?

I know from Phil not to be meticalous about planning so i’m trying to get the balance, i practised yesterday & it’s fun looking what will go with the track playing but my organistaion helps me limit it down to a set hour rather than searching through 12 hours worth of music in 1 playlist. I know number 1 rule is to play what the crowd wants though, not just what mixes well so i’ll make sure i’m not to consumed in my mixing. Thanks

No they are Apple Lossless, I tried converting them to wav & aac but they either converted up to the corrupt part or not at all. I’ve never noticed a problem on my desktop PC in about 7 years of collecting music with 28000 tracks in mp3,aac & apple lossless formats. I had nothing but problems almost immediately once I transfered a few humdred tracks to 2 laptops but I think it was the transfer method, through iTunes shared library over wi-fi. I havn’t noticed any problems since transfering to an external hard drive then the laptop.

I tried with a different laptop, synced my iPhone with the ‘convert higher bitrate to … Kbps’ setting & 3 tracks wouldn’t sync because they couldn’t be converted. Played them & the sound cut out midway through each track. I hadn’t opened them in Traktor yet so the problem is either iTunes or my transfer method which is over wi-fi through iTunes shared library. I’ve since tried by transfering the tracks onto an external hdd first then transfering to the laptop & I havn’t had any problems so far but time will tell!

Ok thanks. I’m going to try and borrow someone elses newer laptop & see if I get the same problems. Luckily all the tags are still there & I have the original flac files so i’ll have to go through the process again but at least I can copy & paste the tags.

I can’t hear a difference between lossless or mp3 320 Kbps but I’ve got the space & I think just incase there’s a difference to some people with certain equipment i’m safe using lossless. Other than the negative size difference it all displays the same in Traktor, album art & tagging but I had to install Quicktime to get apple codecs to work. I would recommend mp3 for DJ use if someone asked me but then i’d explain with Platinum Notes needing to do a re-encode i’d rather it not recompress mp3 twice so I decided to use WAV to lossless & mp3 to lossless even though it’s then a bloted mp3, at least it hasn’t been compressed twice. There still probably wouldn’t be a noticable quality loss lol. I agree LAME is the best MP3 encoder. I use my laptop solely for DJing & my desktop for my entire iTunes collection. I convert any lossless files to LAME mp3 with Foobar2000 for my desktop iTunes collection.

Thanks for the reply, I download wavs & mp3 320 Kbps. I’ll output to wav & convert to apple lossless. I just put a recent album through Platinum Notes & I could notice a big difference this time, it sounds like exactly what you described, flattening the EQ taking away the highs & I like it. I also tried the Festival template which I like too, sounds like it takes a little less away from the highs. You may like it if you haven’t tried it. I don’t know which one i’m going to use but which ever I go for i’ll check through each track after to make sure it doesn’t sound worse. If it sounds worse i’ll disable the Multiband Expansion because it sounds the same as the originals dynamics only with less volume so they’ll all have the same levels.
