hey guys – I created a group on soundcloud called breaks 2014….no idea about groups but thought I would start it and see if it actually gets any members with almost no (just this) publicising 🙂

Anyway – breaks and d&B and stuff… feel free!!!!

ant – there are a lot of different ways to mix.  Golden rule is get them in time and match them perfectly…then there are so many things you can do.

What you are describing may be the right mix for 2 tracks and the wrong for another 2.  Some tracks will blend and build and make a new sound together – others create a neat cut off, some need bass lines to be switched…many, many options and no “one size fits all” answer.

if you don’t want to lose the energy you just need to get the track order right and make sure one hook line its at exactly the sweet spot between tracks that are beautiful together.  the sweet spot makes the intro/outro invisible.

And don’t think the world is taking short cuts.  Some DJs maybe, but the majority of Djs are not spinning their own tunes or reprints they have remixed for convenience.  The best DJs play real tracks you or I can get hold of…they may get a lot that are not in available when they play them and some that never are, but most of the time they are just playing the same type of track as you and me.

Is this the same guy that you are talking about in the other thread where you ask if it is cheating or someone else?

Also, transition tracks are not cheating but they are generally boring and will create a boring sound tbh.  I would only even think of using something like that if I had 2 songs that really would not work together but simply needed to be played next to each other….rare.  Maybe even non existent, depending on what you play.

Brandon – there is no cheating – we are playing tracks, it isn’t a competition, but just like when you look at bands you can make an opinion on whether they are talented, lame or just there because they look good.

If he is playing remixes with what you are describing as transition tracks – there is nothing  wrong with that if he is making them sound good.  I am not sure what you mean by mash-up…not really sure what anyone means by it tbh!!

Someone else will be better placed to answer your bonus question because that is not something I do.

I am sure it won’t work most of the time, but I decided to Tweet a record label as I am going to make a mix with a number of their tracks for Soundcloud and asked if I could have permission.

They said “Of course…send us link when you have done it”.    If you have a mix removed you can dispute and if you have permission they ask if will put it back.  I am sure mixes from such a label don’t get removed in the first place, but worth knowing that some are really open to their tracks being used and others are very much against it.

that is very interesting Vesper…. none of my mixes other than the one I mentioned have been taken down, but I know someone who went to upload their first mix and it would not even allow it to be posted.  He had mixed a few Hardwell releases.

Must mean my type of music is not that popular 😉

youtube has some impressive technology that searches for copyrighted material, so don’t be suprised if the audio won’t work on Ipads and mobile devices if you are using other people’s tracks…they allow it to stay for PC viewers for some reason

If you are not using the outro you need to understand some things that simply don’t come without experience:

    1. What songs to mix togethor and which are big no-no’s.  This applies more to PARTS of the song too.

    2.  There are usually a few points in the incoming and outgoing song that will hit it perfectly.  Find them and work backwards from there, make sure the cue point/cut points means you can utilise these special points in the song

    3. Don’t have too much “noise” going on at once.  It usually doesn’t work.

    4.  be careful that basslines are not “wrestling with each other”

    5. Some songs are harder to mix than others – learn to recognise these – doesn’t mean you don’t mix them, just means they may require more thought.

    6. Experiment with bringing in a percussion with the bass turned down and then bring it up at certain points, this can add a seamless feel to transition

Can you post a soundcloud/mixcloud link with your attempts – I would be happy to provide some commentary on what I think is the reason it is not quite right.

Also, if you ever want to listen to any of my mixing I am happy to talk you through exactly what I have done as I use a number of different techniques depending on the tracks.  This is not me saying I am great, but i do have experience and know how to do mixing well……where I am weak is scratching 🙂 (yes, I am doing the course!!!!!!)

thanks Terry…… Oh the irony, I don’t use Facebook (yes, the only person on the planet, I know)…but my question is related to social media.

So I will just ask you here.  The intro page is great, but it would be helpful to have a post where anyone that would like to make themselves available to other forum users on their social media can post details.

So, for example if I wanted people to join my Google+ circle or facebook, or twitter, or soundcloud I could post the details and everyone’s are in a single thread.

I think this would be good as it would be voluntary (of course) but will be a means to promote your music via social media – and social media is so much more integrated now.

Anyway, it was just an idea.  I only think it would work if it was a forum “sticky” though, that was what I was going to ask.  Can it be made one?

If it proves to be unpopular then it can be un-stickied and I can look a bit silly 🙂

what would be good is if there was a list of artists/labels that were happy for you to use their stuff sensibly (i.e. not entire song from start to finish) in mixes

A lot of people are new here because the forum was not accepting new user accounts D-Jam, so not everyone will have read that before.

The problem is that soundcloud generates about 100 times the traffic as mixcloud and mixcrate, which seem pretty ineffective unless you have loads of followers already.

@ Jayphillips.  I am over 90% certain that I was not infringing copyright at all, but Soundcloud take the safe option I guess.  Interesting that they allow most mixes to stay.

Also, youtube, you will eventually have most things taken down as Google has incredible software now that can recognise pretty much anything…..
