  • in reply to: How should I write an article for the blog? #2106341

    Oh, I see.

Well, I was musing on the technical side of it actually, I was thinking of writing an article on using your smartphone\tablet as a second display. In fact, I was aiming to try to tell people not to run behind the gear and instead concentrate on the main task at hand (DJing).

A lesson I myself learnt a couple of weeks back. Suffering from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) has become pretty common for the DJs and Producers of today.

I think you’re going too much into the technical side of the gear. You’re a DJ and not a technician da 🙂

I don’t think you need to match the impedence levels so accurately, why not just get a pair that isolate well and instead of delving too much into the specs, get a headphone amp to go with it?

There’s no perfect pair of cans that’ll likely have everything you need, but you can always improvise.

I’m not saying you need to know a tune inside-out. Once you’re into the music, It will all come naturally to you. You will know precisely when a breakdown is approaching and you’ll be able to predict when a track is going to be dropped. The real fun lies in how a DJ manages to surprise the crowd with these tricks.

As for playing B2B, I haven’t had any experience with that, that’s something new to me as well. Maybe someone more experienced will be able to help us 🙂

I’m still using the Mixtrack Pro 2, and VDJ. No rekordbox for me.

But I have 3 cue-points at my leisure. I set the first one at a calm place, the second at the drop and the third at a smooth place. So I can get the crowd going mental or ease things down a bit at my own pace.

My mixing points are determined by the track that I’m about to mix in. If one has a weak breakdown with vocals and the other has a lush break, I’ll mix them over the breakdown. If a track has a really cool buildup and the other has a huge drop, I’ll simply cut across to the next one just as the build is over.

Of course for this to happen you need to “know your music” well. I’ve heard of DJs simply ripping off tracks from Youtube and just hitting play in front of the crowd without even listening to it once, and calling themselves a “DJ”.

I feel you shouldn’t have a fixed mix-in or mix-out points because it would just limit your options and reduce your creativity. Don’t be afraid o trying something new every time. I learnt this lesson last week 🙂

in reply to: about key , what is that ? #2105431

Every track is written in a specific key(or keys) which is basically a repetitive succession of seven notes.

Lets say there were two tracks written in the key of A minor, which means they play the same notes, only the timings are different. If you were to mix between these two tracks, it would be pretty smooth since they play within the same succession of notes.

I think the RMX2 has smaller jogwheels than the MTP2, and well, judging from the number of pads on each deck, I highly doubt that the RMX2 even comes close to the MTP2.

However I can’t be 100% sure, I only have an MTP2 and its fabulous, I’m loving it!

    Thumbs up Vintage, I agree!

Oh, no wonder both you and Terry are so active. Isn’t Phil Morse a Mod?

Your laptop and a pair of headphones/speakers. Period.

If you know music theory, add in a MIDI keyboard. Build on this as you learn.

I figured, but whats a Moderator?

in reply to: Analog mixing – Browsing tracks #2103131

I use the inbuilt Portable WiFi Hotspot feature for Android to do it, no router necessary.

Oh hey, I was looking for the same thing, thanks for this thread. Hopefully someone will have ideas…

Tablet: Lenovo A1000 running Android Jelly Bean

Laptop: Lenovo G450 running Windows 7 Ultimate

Display: I’m using iDisplay, it has both Android and iOS versions which can be linked up with the PC/Mac application to create an additional touch-enabled screen through Wifi, there is a bit of lag though (not much, it wont bother if you’re a DJ, but it is noticeable when you’re gaming)

DJ: I’m on Virtual DJ 7, where it has the option to expand the browser to full screen. I click on that and simply drag the entire window over to the second display (The Tablet screen, in this case)

And it’s touch-enabled too, so if I wanna look at the screen, all I’ve to do is tap the browser-collapse button on the 2nd screen.

Simple, yet effective. Maybe I could write an article about this one 🙂

I use it with Virtual DJ and the effects are selectible. Hold the shift button and turn the desired effect knob to load a different effect in that slot.

This “MOD” word has been bugging me for days now. First Anjunabeats and now here, what is a MOD?!?
