MemberWhen I play deep house, tech house or minimal I ALWAYS try to mix in key and I generally think a lot of people do notice at these gigs.
When I play commercial house gigs I don’t really care and nor does the crowd.

MemberNail ya first mix. It gives you such a big confidence boost when the first mix works perfect.
Other then that I think its inevitable and a good thing that you’ll be nervous. I was shitting myself at my first gig, just try to remember to have fun, and that even if you do stuff up most people honestly don’t even notice.

Membermmmmm I’ve just always noticed a big difference on larger systems between the two. At home your right I can barely tell the difference but as soon as its cranking on a large system it just sounds… well like it’s missing bits.

MemberOk misunderstanding then it seems, Podcasts and Demo mixes are very different things.
But generally everyone on this board isn’t at the level of the bigger name DJs who do weekly podcasts (at least to receive the mountains of free tune they do) and unless you know some important people or talented producers we’re all left scrounging the same pool, as unique as we might think we are.You can get a “spark” without newer tunes, just working on your mixing techniques. I get more a shiver from an unexpected classic.

MemberI’m all for new tunes and educating… (I play a lot of tech house so there’s not as many “big songs” compared to the more commercial (avicii, shm, alesso etc) end of house your talking about)
I just find it hard to fathom someone criticizing someone elses mix for having a tune 3 months old on it, especially when I’d hardly call someone finding a new Ingrosso/Alesso/Avicii etc tune unique, I’d guarantee a million other DJs would’ve also found that tune, not having a crack but seriously those guys are probably some of the biggest DJs in the world. Everyone follows their new tunes.
Like your sig says, At the end of the day its all about the music. Not the release date.

MemberA Mixtrack is a good idea.
Just remember not to spend to much on headphones, either spend a lot or get something cheap that will break and you will have to upgrade.
Sennheiser make some cheaper models that are OK.. I used a cheaper set a few times for gigs when I forgot my Pioneers. I still carry some HD202s around as backupsshr3dder

It was this comment I really objected too.
3 months old.. the ability to pull out older (3 months is not old) tunes can really define you as a DJ.

MemberI get making mixes with new tunes to get to know them, I do that myself.
However my main point is that release date of a tune shouldn’t matter at all when playing to a crowd or making a promo mix, in fact it’s one of the last things I consider when choosing a tune. A whole set of new tunes would probably be more uninteresting and uninspired then a whole set of older tunes. A balance is the key. Especially with a demo if your trying to show your “style”.
I love finding new tunes before they hit it big too, but if a tune was made in 1994, 2004 or came out this morning really doesn’t matter. A good tune is a good tune.

MemberI’ve run Traktor and a DDJ T1 on a 2008 Macbook with no issues at all…. So yeah that’d be ample.

MemberRestricting yourself to new music is a terrible idea.
Release date really shouldn’t matter that much. Good music is good music regardless of when it came out.
Then again some people seem to love playing the latest top 10 from Beatport like 5 million other DJs

MemberWav. Always wav.

MemberSuprisingly little.
Anything with a minimum of a i3 and 4gig of RAM should be more then enough, tho I’ve ran Traktor on a Core2Duo with no problems.

MemberFantstic headphones.
Not for DJing but still.
They’re designed by a dude that used to work for Monster (Beats etc) who left the company in a bit of a protest to the ridiculous pricing of Beats by Dre.
So basically they take all the good bits of Beats (admittedly not much) and remove the biggest kicker, the price.
