I thought about the light bridge one but decided against it. I am going to be somewhat restricted on setup space at a lot of the venues I will be playing at, and I am not a huge fan of overhead lighting, further in the future I will probably invest in some 1.5 or 2m truss stands. My speakers are slightly infront of me to the sides so its not too bad. I also think the backlit stretch covers look tacky, if I was to ever get them I would get black ones and not backlight them. Thanks for your input though 🙂

Yeah I thought it would be a silly idea. It was just I saw a setup the other day and I have to say it looked awesome, guy had a sub either side of his facade and just had a moving head sat on each sub. My speakers are on stands just behind at the sides of my 7ft facade, and I’m not a fan of overhead light bars or t bars etc for small functions. But just an idea I’ll move stuff around a bit. Thanks 🙂

This is very important information and I really appreciate your two cents. I have actually massively increased my speaker and setup budget, figured I may aswell do it properly, once! I don’t want the stress of hiring equipment or wondering if my speakers are going to last the night without overheating or failing. So took a 6 month interest free finance option and have ordered the JBL EON 515XT Active Speakers and a JBL EON 518s 18″ Active sub. I am hoping these will have the ability to perform and perform again and again for years to come! Beside’s I don’t wana be one of those bedroom DJ’s turning up to DJ someone’s wedding with some £200 speakers and a tacky piece of star cloth, quality equipment will hopefully pay for itself! Now I just hope I can fit them into the back of a large estate car with the seats down or I’m going to have to buy a van aswell!

Thanks for all the help over the last few days guys it is really appreciated. I think at this moment in time I don’t want to go too crazy with expenditure and lay out too much money just incase this venture simply doesn’t work out. Especially since this will be used in greece and everybody is so wasted over there they probably wouldnt notice the difference between bose and skytec. So I’ve decided to go for two active tops and one sub. Im leaning towards the Behringer B612d tops and Behringer B1500d sub. But part of me is still saying go for the peavey PVXp 15 tops, nothing is certain yet. Now an even bigger decision to be made…Vehicle? Do you think I would get the above equipment alongside a midi controller, stands and a few scanners into the back of a large estate car or would you recommend just going for a small van? I didn’t really want a van as an everyday vehicle would prefer a diesel estate but it has to be able to carry this gear?

Thanks again, yeah ultimately I will be adding a sub at some point, just scared to invest too much money then not get any gigs, maybe these ones would be a better choice then http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-PVXp-15-1600W-DJ-PA-Disco-Active-Powered-Speakers-PAIR-With-Stands-/191069543115?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Speakers_Monitor&hash=item2c7ca1dacb and I might add a single 18″ sub. Im liking the look of the peavey range especially with that 5 year warranty.

I Think it would make a lot of sense to go with active anyway especially while I am inexperienced in matching things up and setting sound levels. I may just go for a pair of Peavey 215d powered speakers and skip the subs for now. They will give me 800w RMS which I hope will comfortably handle 100 people, I can get a pair for £750 with the peavey 5 year warranty which I think is quite reasonable. And since they have 4 15″ speakers between them and they aren’t mounted on stands they should kick a comfortable bit of bass out. Any feedback on these speakers?

Ok I need some more educating, I am more then likely going to go with an active setup, so that I know everything is matched well, but I have been looking at the Peavey Pro range which are passive. Saw a bundle of 2 pro15 tops and 2 pro subwoofers, each producing 350w rms giving a total power of 1400w rms. And these are designed to work together completely at 4 ohms. So basically is the Peavey range reasonably good quality? And What spec of amplifier would I need to power it to its full potential? And when it comes to amps is there a major difference between cheaper ranges and the premium ones when it comes to performance and sound quality? This should cater for 100 people comfortably? Thanks again for all the help you guys have been great!

Some very good input guys I have decided to adjust things in my shopping list and also extend my budget a bit. Going to go with 2 active tops and a subwoofer. Still researching which one’s but I am a big fan of doing it right the first time. Just a lil question on connecting then if I only have one sub, It will go DDJ SX – PA Mixer – Subwoofer – Active Speaker on one output and directly from PA Mixer – Active Speaker on the other channel? Or will both outputs go to one subwoofer which will then through the signal to both tops? I’m a little bit lost there. Also do I need to make sure the sub low filters the through signal or will tops generally have the correct crossovers built in?

Thanks for the great answers guys. Well I have a budget of £500 max for speakers and amps, I need to be able to cater for a comfortable 100 people. Anything bigger I will hire equipment in. Can anyone recommend anything for this price range or am I pissing in the wind?

Thanks for the replies guys I am understanding this more and more now. But could someone please tell me why the speakers that I posted a link to would suck? They have plenty of power? If I ran them alongside subwoofers aswell?

Very informative guide’s thank you. My shopping list has just expanded! But one question on connecting up… If I add 1 or 2 subwoofers to a setup do they all generally have a “through” type feature? So I connect Mixer – Active Subwoofer – Active Speaker? And if this is correct will this affect sound quality from the speakers? Reliability is very very important to me as It will be being used in sometimes very hot environments (bars in Greece). Thanks for the help!

I have a Sony Viao with an i5 processor, I upped the Ram to 8GB and swapped out the 1TB HDD to a 250GB SSD. I also optimised it for DJ software. It handles everything with ease and cost me no more then £520 total.
