ParticipantThanks for that. I will check this out tonight.

ParticipantAbleton was originally created for production but happens to be decent at DJing with too. Traktor was made originally for DJing but has evolved to have some live remixing capabilities using the remix decks. For traditional “standard” mixing then Traktor is the clear winner. For the more modern, layered (often pre-planned) type of mixing then Ableton wins. Considering that you can still have some of your Ableton-style workflow using the remix decks then Traktor is a good option. Its a solid piece of software that is aggressively trying to become the industry standard so you know the developers will work hard on it. The price is even more attractive. Try out the fully working free demo on the Native Instruments website.

ParticipantAmerican TV + radio is almost intolerable for me.

ParticipantI’m sure a crafty google image search could help but that’s all I’ll say

ParticipantThis is normal as it can either be the nature of the effect itself or due to compression to the audio when the effect is applied. Apparently raising the sample rate for your audio interface can help with this but I’ve never tried it. If the volume dip is not sounding right then chances are you’re not using the effect correctly ie flanger when the beat is playing will often sound bad.

ParticipantI tried TuneUp and it was a disaster. It ruined the names of so many tracks. Its better for commercial albums and stuff but once you are getting in to not so well known (read: anything not commercial) it struggles. I’ve never used Beatunes but heard decent things.

ParticipantThis is a little suspect…

ParticipantI used to take my classic midi fighter to gigs and use the instant gratification mapping. Super easy to add a little more to the mix without any effort at all. The mapping stopped working after the 2.5 update and I haven’t bothered to try anything else out since then. In answer to your question, the midi fighter is a great investment.

ParticipantI’m on the fence about this one. One one hand it might get you more exposure but on the other hand if you don’t think your scratching is up to standard then perhaps reconsider. I’ve heard plenty of tracks with bad scratching. It bothers me but it won’t bother the general public so much…which doesn’t help to answer the question any more sorry.

ParticipantThis is a pretty big (and exhausted) argument in the DJ world at the moment.

ParticipantThe club has a pretty broad selection of house equipment so I don’t think you will have a problem. They list these things as they are the industry standards that appear in DJ booths but if DJs are digital then they bring their own gear. You can’t expect a club to have much (if any) digital gear.

ParticipantThere is absolutely nothing wrong with playing for free if its to get your foot in the door. In many area’s its the norm to get more sets, a tryout of sorts. Anyone who complains about that is just jealous that you you are playing and they are not. Continuing to play for free at the same venue is not good though. And you have to know when your have had enough experience that you don’t have to play for free to get a set.

Because not everyone can afford to have a computer solely for music/DJ work. I travel and do everything off my Macbook Pro. I am extremely careful what I do and download with it but it still gets used for everything.

ParticipantHip hop/rap mixing is usually quite different than mixing EDM. Its more about quick drops and cuts and scratching is beneficial for making the quick blends smoother

ParticipantVestax controllers are excellent it terms of design and build quality. One of the best brands at the moment (in my opinion). If you like Traktor then you could look in to the VCI-400. The VCI-380 is great but I’m not really a fan of itch. Its great for basic mixing but lacks more advanced features (again in my opinion)
