I’m pretty sure I’ve killed a few conversations talking about DJ stuff to people who don’t mix or have any interest to do so. I did have one friend who told me he was sick of seeing DJ related posts on my Facebook…he had a go at mixing when we had a few people over, the other night, and decided he didn’t mind anymore.

Subtle use and preparation are the key. If you are still trainwrecking or doing a p***-poor mixes then you probably should not even be thinking about touching effects until you learn how to mix…
    Just saying…

At the risk of sounding like an oldschooler who can’t let go of the past (not the case I promise you), if everyone learnt to mix on 2 belt drive turntables and a piece of crap 2 channel mixer then the quality of mixing would be much higher.

No worries dude. Good luck! Keep practising across many genres though or things could get hairy.

Do not under any circumstances put anything that would indicate any inexperience. DJs are a dime a dozen…especially inexperienced ones who want to play at clubs.
I’d be surprised if putting an ad anywhere would even get you a set for anything other than something tragic and not worth your time…that being said, it could be a good opportunity to expand your skills and get comfortable playing to the public. If you’re looking for legit club gigs then make the effort to actually go to the club and get yourself a set. You have to find them…they won’t find you…

Maybe check out Phils recent article on hustling for sets

I have a friend who plays an electric violin along to uplifting trance. Its pretty awesome to see.

That being said…I think its time to put Levels to rest now. Its been heard way too many times.

I wasn’t sure if I imagined a difference or not but it does feel like it goes from nothing to pretty full on all of a sudden.

I think everyones forgetting that the S4 has been around for quite a while now. Much longer than many of its current competing controllers. When it came out there was nothing even close that had the same level of function or tightness with Traktor. Its not impossible to get the same degree of functionality out of any other reasonable controller but it requires a lot of hacking. The Ean Golden edition of the VCI 400 is super tight with Traktor. The gap is closing with other brands but I’m sure Native Instruments will just release another controller that kills everything. Everyone is ripping on the plastic shell of the S4 but lets not forget that CDJs are plastic and are reasonably durable. I’d be more concerned about the knobs, faders and buttons that the body material.

@Hee Won Jung: What are some other types of transitions?

@Steelo: How would I do an echo freeze?

Ean Golden from the DJ Tech Tools blog made this video on the echo freeze:

Theres really not too many more ways to mix different BPMs, than what Hee Won Jung explained above. Theres a few other effects related ones or scratching in to a new track.

I downloaded some early version of Virtual DJ and used to just put it on automix when I was getting ready to go to school or going out. I had only really just discovered electronic music so my playlists were pretty atrocious.

I use the ladder cause the lack of resonance in the Xone just sounds really dull. The ladder filter has way too much resonance in my opinion though. I really wish they would add a “Pioneer” filter which would be a happy medium.

Go to clubs/club nights you’re interested in, get there early on the night and mingle with the promoters, DJs, managers etc. Have some demo’s ready to hand out and ask for sets.

The set before the band is more a filler than anything. I would keep it mellow but with just enough drive to gte people in the mood. After the band plays then you can go big.

Then echo freeze is a really simple effect to do this.

I would say not to rip CDs using itunes. The sound quality is pretty average compared to a million other pieces of software (many of them freeware). I use one that I think is called Max or something like that. Its freeware and lets you pick which encoder you want to use. The latest version of the LAME encoder is solid for sound quality. I ripped the same cd using this and then itunes, both at 320kbps and I found I could hear the difference.

You can drag hundreds of songs onto the TuneUp sidebar in a single click does the job. When it’s done, you’ll have a list to approve with any tricky songs or album. The free version of TuneUp is limited to 50 songs per month

I used Tuneup and it made a complete mess of my music collection. Never again! It took me ages to get things back to normal. It seems decent for mainstream albums but anything else it struggles with.
