ParticipantThe controllers are often designed for a specific software, and include easy access to or the ability to use the latest features from that software – 2 examples:
Traktor – their recently released top-end S8 controller makes much use of their remix decks and is fully compatible to use with the new file format they are bringing out which separates out the different parts of a track.
Serato – newer controllers include support for newer features, such as Serato Flip, which needs certain pads/controls to be able to trigger them
So whilst what you are saying – you want to be able to keep the hardware you get now for a while – that is possible. But you will eventually lose mappings/support for your controller or they will release a load of new features that you then can’t use but want to.. So you will eventually have to upgrade.
And, because the software is constantly updating, changing, the controller market too is constantly changing to account for these new features. So, actually, whilst software does change regularly, the controller market is also constantly changing. I know there are differences – namely the cost of upgrading software vs hardware and that it is (arguably) easier to upgrade software then hardware – but that is the state of things at the minute.
And on the subject of workflow – download the demo’s for both. use your keyboard as a simple controller. Try them, give them both time.. One will click.. the other probably wont. For me, Virtual DJ clicked.. For Terry it was Serato and for Vintage it was Cross.. But that does not mean that all of us are wrong – it means that we are different, DJ in different ways and we are happy to agree to disagree on which one is best – because it is so personal.

ParticipantI hope that was sarcasm there Arnaldi.. 🙂
I see no problem using this setup live, if you ever get that far, other than you would need a while to set up and make sure it was all working properly 🙂

ParticipantAs Terry says.. any decent one will do.. At the lower end (price wise), I would go for either the Numark DJ-IO or the Traktor Audio 2..
Pretty much any decent soundcard will work though 🙂

ParticipantAre the turntables connected through the SL4 or DJM-250?
If they are run through the SL4, through Serato, then just use the inbuilt recorder in Serato.
If they are connected through the mixer (which I assume they are), I would run the RCA outs from the mixer into an input on your SL4. I would then use Garageband to record the mix (its free). Just make sure that you don’t distort the inputs on the SL4 from the output of your mixer – but don’t have it too quiet either.. A signal level that peaks at about 80-90% of capacity should be about right.. 🙂
That should work.. 🙂

ParticipantI’ve uploaded remix’s before now and they have stayed up no problem – I did make sure that I named all the artists/track names when I did this though…
Might be different for mashups as you have a greater likelihood of triggering the algorithms if you have a number of tracks in there? I tend to remix more obscure tracks so that may be how I have got away with it..?

ParticipantSounds good – that’s a pretty good deal as well.
This could be useful?
Or this, depending on how you want to link the 2?

I wouldn’t recommend an N4 at the minute.. It came out in 2011/2012 and the DJing world has moved on since.. the NV is a better option..

ParticipantTraditionally, You would need a soundcard with 4 mono or 2 stereo outputs if you are mixing inside the software. This is so that you have 1 stereo out dedicated to your speaker output and one stereo output dedicated to your headphone out.
So, I would say that you need a 4-out soundcard for that. BUT this depends on how you link maschine to traktor. Can you route the audio through your PC without needing to send it through a soundcard?
The Traktor Audio 2 has 2 x stereo outs and so would do the job for you, also worth considering is the Numark DJ-IO, which is a bit cheaper but similar in functionality.
The Novation Audiohub looks like a decent bit of kit (and according to their website it is the same on the inside as my focusrite 2i4) but it requires external power, you don’t need the USB hub and it is much bigger physically than either the Audio 2 or the DJ-IO..

ParticipantHaha.. Thanks 🙂
I haven’t been around here that long though.. I just have good technical knowledge, too much time and the ability to type what I mean in a clear(ish) way.. 🙂
DJ Vintage and Terry_42 have been around a lot longer than I have.. 🙂
Got ur mix playing atm so I’ll post on there later.. 🙂

ParticipantI would recommend the controller that works for you and stuff everyone else for judging on looks.. 🙂 Only you know which controller that is though.
I find with requests that just having a huge music library available – not specifically all playlisted etc. but atleast analysed in your software lets you deal with requests more easily.. It is a trick though to predict what people will want at each gig and to predict their requests. When you start getting that right you know you’ve got it 🙂
So, for me, that means watching the charts, downloading decent tracks, checking out the radio playlists (The BBC publish them in the UK btw) as this all helps you predict what people will want to hear. But every audience is different so my methods may not work for you at all..

ParticipantIt is all about choosing which software/workflow works best for you.
This means that you should try out the different options out there, find which one just sort of “clicks” and then stick with it..
In terms of software you need, you need your DJ software. Nothing else. However, iTunes can be useful for managing your library and many people swear by Mixed In Key/Platinum Notes for sorting out their songs for them..
The full (ish) list of software out there is:
Live DJ Software
– Serato
– Traktor
– Virtual DJ
– Mixvibes Cross DJ
– Mixx (Not as common but open source and therefore free)
– Ableton Live (More for live-remixing type sets/production sets than what Serato/Traktor etc. offer)Production Software:
– Apple Logic Pro
– Avid Pro Tools
– Cockos Reaper
– FL Studio
– Reason
– Audacity (Not nearly as good as any of the other options imo)Track Management Software:
– Apple iTunes (Nearly everyone uses this on a regular basis – some people don’t like it though. It can be clunky)
– Platinum Notes (Cleans up your tracks, improves the sound – most of the time anyway, sets all your tracks to one volume level)
– Mixed in Key (Adds lots of data to the metadata of your tracks. Useful for harmonic mixing sets as it is much more accurate than your DJ software)
– Recordbox (This is made by Pioneer for transferring your music collection with cue points and bpm data in a format that CDJ’s can read)You DO NOT need all of these, as I said earlier you actually only need 1 bit of software. After that the software you use should just make your life easier.. 🙂
I would own, personally, your DJ software, iTunes, Platinum Notes and a decent DAW (I chose Logic). Between all of them I can do whatever I like. 🙂

ParticipantCould it be that your CPU is getting a bit hot, the OS then slows it down to cool it down a bit and then you end up maxing it out, causing obvious harsh sounding glitches coming through?
I very much doubt that going through a mixer will help at all though
As said above – turn off Wifi/anti-virus/anything running in the background that you don’t need..
