“(there is something with Traktor – if the cursor is not in the search field and you start typing, it messes with the playing deck, I need to investigate)”

This is because the keyboard is mapped to various controls – I made my own mapping for when I am DJing for VirtualDJ – find a list of the mappings here: http://traktortips.com/keyboard-shortcuts/

    Glad it went well 🙂

As per what Vintage said, these might be just the job for uplighting – battery powered, wireless DMX (so you can sync them) and probably not too hard to buy/hire.. http://www.americandj.eu/en/wifly-qa5-ip.html

    What’s your budget?

I would also suggest using the search function as this has come up a few times over the last couple of months 🙂

I wouldn’t bother getting an external drive for storing music on if you laptop hard drive isn’t overflowing – I keep all my music on my hard drive – which is a SATA 1 500GB disc in my now getting-on-a-bit Dell laptop – and I have no problems loading tracks in VDJ. You would find that the track loading time would be increased using an external disc – any drive not attached directly through SATA will be slower than a SATA disc..

A prime example would be that I have a version of windows 8.1 installed on an external drive (USB 3.0, 300Mb/s drive) as a backup – and that takes over twice as long to boot as windows 8.1 does from my hard drive.

When you say it stutters, do you mean that the audio output stutters when you try to load a track? If it does, try increasing the latency on your soundcard – I had that problem (I was running mine at 3ms though lol) and that fixed it.

Guy – I would suggest that you disable the “check for updates” function on pretty much every piece of software on your PC.

(USe C-Cleaner for this – launch it, go to Options -> Startup and pretty much disable everything that isn’t made by intel, microsoft etc.)

I would also change the rules in Vista for updating to “Download updates but let me choose when to update” – stops the annoying updating thing..

It is important to keep all your software up-to-date though – try simply uninstalling anything you don’t want/need?

Also – Whilst I would agree that “later does not necessarily mean better”, I would say that small updates to programs do nearly always improve them – so whilst you may not want to go to the brand new version that’s just been released (EG VDJ 7 to VDJ 8), updating from 7.3.4 to 7.3.5 will probably make the software better..

Frankly, if you have to ask then I would stick with VDJ until you are more comfortable..

If, however, you are comfortable with it (and confident you can use Serato to do a better job than you could with VDJ) then go for it 🙂

It’s really up to you – it depends on “used it lightly” really means – if lightly means you have messed around on it every now and again then I would suggest sticking with VDJ for now. If lightly means you have been practicing on it a few hours a week for the last couple of months and you are confident that you have imported your DJ database properly etc. then go for it 🙂

Yeah.. I’ll be waiting until end of September probably before I update from 8.1 – give them a chance to sort all those bugs out that they haven’t found yet.. 🙂

Well.. You’ve named 2 high-end, pro spec controllers and a slightly less pro spec controller in that bunch.. (the SR being a rung down)..

All of these have stand-a-lone functionality, decent audio interfaces etc.

Advantages of them (from my eyes):
    NS7:
+ Spinning Turntables – apparently easier to scratch on if coming from vinyl but a bit of a gimmick otherwise
+ Good layout, (Personally I love the idea of touch sensitive EQ knobs for easy killing..)..
    – Unbelievably huge and heavy… not portable..
    SX2:
+ Good layout, good feature set etc.
    – Quite large (though not as big as the NS7)

    SR:
    + Smaller controller
    – Only 2 channels

Basic summary.. all are decent controllers but all have their own features and plus points – decide on what you want most for your style of DJing.

When people release updates to software, it’s generally LESS buggy and/or has MORE features..

So I literally have no clue why you wouldn’t update..

When it comes to plugins, any decent DAW will have enough built in for you to make a pretty decent start and even further – I would just start with what you have – all you need is a couple of instrument patches, an EQ, a compressor, a bitcrusher, a gain plugin and a noise gate and you’re done – and start messing around for a bit..

Mastering is something that you shouldn’t do yourself.. Not because of a lack of talent or anything like that – but simply it is not a good idea to master your own tracks once you have mixed them down.. Mastering is an art in itself and there are people in the world who do literally nothing else.. For now though, just don’t let the master output distort 🙂

I would also recommend checking out http://www.soundonsound.com for some decent tips on how to get the most out of your DAW – they have articles on pretty much all the popular DAWs out there… 🙂

Start off designing your track layout, then your chord structure, then your bass line and build it up from there 🙂

That’s an awful lot of kit considering you can’t make any of it work…

On the audio side, you have the following outputting sound:
    – iPad
    – Kaosspad Quad
    – Kaossilator Pro
    – NI Audio 6

I would plug each of these into a stereo channel on your mixer (there are 4 stereo channels), bypassing the RCA mixer as you don’t need it.

I would then send the CTL ROOM/SUBMIX output to your SRM150’s and the main output to your SRM450’s.

    Audio done…

In terms of keeping it all in sync, you have the following which can plug (via USB) into your PC:
    – Kaossilator Pro
    – APC Key 25
(Excluding the interface as it is a dumb device)

Now, I’m not sure why you are running Ableton and Mainstage together, since Ableton can do pretty much all of what Mainstage can do, and it would be so much easier to set up if you only run one DAW..? So..

I don’t know. You have an awful lot of kit and I cannot see how it all will sync together – the Kaosspad doesn’t even connect to your computer digitally! I suggest that you strip it down to what you actually need (I would say Ableton, the keyboard and your interface into your mixer) and forget about everything else until you have learnt enough to figure it out for yourself – even for the more advanced people on this forum it would probably take a few hours sitting there with your hardware to get it all working properly.. MIDI is not easy to use when you have multiple devices..

    Sorry Terry.. AAC’s are stored as “.m4a” files – not “.mp4” – “.mp4” files are a joint video/audio storage format.. 🙂

I generally wait until the bugs have been worked out of brand new software…

For example, I wont be upgrading to Win 10 straight away (I’m on 8.1 at the minute) but I will wait a couple of months…

Same when it comes to new software – although with new updates for older software I update straight away… 🙂

So hard this week.. found a load of tracks over the weekend, love them all..
I have narrowed it down though to this one – something a bit different from chart music and I quite like it..

Track: Trouble Is As Trouble Does
    Artist: Striking Matches

The sound coming out of your laptop speakers is because you haven’t set it right in your audio settings on your pc.
(NOTE: The following solutions do not allow the volume faders to control the output volume of the music and I do not recommend using this system when DJing as any other sound your laptop generates will go through the speakers as well)

    Windows Solution:
    – Right Click on the volume symbol bottom right of your screen.
    – Select “Playback Devices”
    – Select your controller (output 1-2)
    – Set it as default device
    – Done

    Mac Solution:
    – Go to system preferences
    – Select “Sound”
    – Go to “Output Devices”
    – Select your controller (output 1-2)
    – Done

As I said, I do not recommend using this when DJing (it is illegal to stream from Youtube or similar when DJing as well) as any other sounds your computer may make (bings.. bongs… email notifications.. etc.) will also go through the PA. There is no workaround to just get the sound from your browser through the PA.
