MemberI use Time Machine to backup to an external drive. Should be ok as long as I don’t get robbed!

MemberI actually think the odds might be stacked against me. Even people like Hawtin & Dubfire don’t play with all loops – they seem to mostly A-B mix with loops / maschine / FX on top.
So if they can’t do it with all the time and money they have – what chance do I stand 🙂

MemberCongrats! As ElMuppet says – take some CDs as a backup in case your laptop crashes.

MemberI have considered the F1 – and it would be great. They’re too expensive though for what is supposed to be a hobby!

MemberI have tried with Ableton too in the past and also found that a lot of effort. Traktor I find much quicker as its beat detection is better so 99% of the time I don’t have to correct where it says the beats are.
I think the reason I want to do it is that it will in theory give me full control over the sound of the mix. I imagine having an arsenal of loops – beats / melodies / fx / percussion – which are all organised in key and also by intensity.
By using 4 track decks with loops on all of them I think I could achieve this. I’m going to give it a go and see how far I get!

MemberBasically I am inspired by what I see people like Richie Hawtin or Dubfire doing (although from some of the clips I’ve watched they do still play full length tracks).
Just curious if anyone else has attempted such a thing yet.

MemberThanks for the tips guys, really appreciate it!
I think like what Michael says I need to do more to keep my interest in it up. I moved from CD to Traktor so that I had the potential to do more, but I just haven’t made the leap beyond A-B mixing (with some effects) yet.

MemberStarted out with 2 x Technics SL1210 Mk2s and a Gemini mixer.
Then bought a pair of CDJ100s – was so bowled over by DJing with CDs that I upgraded them to a pair of CDJ800s.
Since then have moved to Traktor + Macbook Pro + Allen & Heath K2 – all internal mixing with Sync enabled (!)

MemberI “follow” various record labels and producers on Beatport. Then I check the “My Latest Tracks” section a few times a week and listen through the new stuff.

MemberI use one which lasts 2-3 minutes that I cobbled together from other bits and pieces. For my radio show it works well and gives me time to prepare. To plug in my soundcard I have to disconnect a CDJ so the 2-3 minutes gives me time to do this.

MemberTake different kinds of music – upbeat / downtempo / etc
On my first gig I was told to play chill out. When I got there everybody was “on it” and really up for dancing, not chilling! Luckily I had a handful of upbeat tunes and managed to scrape through – went really well for a first gig.
(and it was on vinyl!)
