Sounds like your are kinda walking a thin line with your music choice, is that a big scene? And is that Hamburg as in Hamburg, Germany?
I definitely enjoyed the darker and more minimal tracks, and PLEASE do inform me if you do such a Techno set, would be very into that to see how you mix it and because you sure as hell could enlighten me in regards to some of the classics of the genre 🙂

Hope ur enjoying spinning digital and I will check out your next set, always open to some new music. And thanks a lot for the positive feedback, means a lot coming from someone with as much experience as you have and motivates me to keep improving!

    Have a great week, cheers!

Wouldn’t have thought I’d actually enjoy some of that music (not my genre, so much so, that I didn’t even know what to expect, lol)! The first 5 tracks I enjoyed, then after that I felt like it was getting a little bit trancier in some of the breakdowns etc., I didn’t enjoy it as much strictly musically from that point on. But still, nice to get some exposure to different genres especially in such a well-executed manner. Some of those transitions I played multiple times because they were SO smooth! 😀

Track 10 reminded me a lot of Droplex 🙂

And regarding the length of the set: I like to stick around the 30min mark, but as you noted on my mix that makes me burn through tracks quicker. I personally figure that makes it more interesting for the audience. But I guess that’s just different strokes for different people 🙂

Haha, just how I feel! 😀

No worries, nothing taken personally! Checking your mix out now!

Oh I was sure you had some good reasons to program that way and your thinking makes sense. Everybody’s different and I guess some/maybe lots of people would really dig that way of programming 🙂

As I said: Really nice mix, I’ll check out your next one 🙂

I enjoyed your mix, although programming wasn’t 100% my thing. But you CAN’T get it right for everyone, so now worries here 🙂

Third track threw me a bit off, felt like you took the energy out,and then, to me, it felt like you needed until the 30min mark to get back to that same level. Some of it was rather “dark” like you put it and to me 2-3 tracks didn’t really suit that theme too nicely.

But when it comes to the music selection it always comes down to personal taste, from a technical viewpoint I dig it 🙂

should I really play shit music for uneducated crowds ? even if I hate that music!!

I guess you got lots of helpful replies, so I’m probably not adding anything new here. I just would like to focus more on your attitude towards these things.

See, THAT is a decision you have to make for yourself. You come off a bit frustrated, as seemingly you now found out how it works in the real world – as opposed to some fantasy where people will glorify you and go crazy to the music you play from the get-go because you are so highly educated in your musical taste and whatnot.

I’m not making fun of you here, please don’t take any of it as offense. Sounds like you played in a club, which I never did, so props for getting that far. I’m just trying to be constructive and look at the present and the future.

There’s only two options here: Either decide that this is gonna be a hobby and you’ll play for yourself, maybe setting up a regular podcast or sth like that, the occasional friend’s party (the route I am going down as a hobbyist). Or you gotta man the f*** up and get hustling to BUILD your following, developing your style and getting a crowd. With the latter I have no experience and it’s probably tough since many people nowadays want to be the jesus-pose DJ Hero. But what I KNOW is that being all elitist about it, complaining and NOT taking responsibility is not an option. Or at least only one that won’t get you anywhere. Check the job description again because no matter how technically well executed your set was when people just didn’t dig the music you failed in terms of what you were hired to do. Simple as that.

And if you can’t be bothered to play “that mainstream shit” (I don’t enjoy it either) then draw the right consequences instead of blaming other people. There is no absolute for what good music is. I listen to prog jazz and progrock occasionally but THE UNIVERSE doesn’t give a f***, mate 😉

Well people who are anal about their genres, especially those “original” dubstep lovers who are scared that somebody’s gonna take their precious little scene away (no offense if somebody here falls under that category) make it pretty clear, that all that North American stuff that is often called dubstep (Skrillex, Figure, Bassnectar… what have you) is in fact “Brostep”, whereas Dubstep originally has a less “overpowering” sound if you wanna put it like that. Especially with dusbtep dubstep, it’s about low frequency wobbles (in addition to the breakbeat), as opposed to brostep where the wobbles actually tend to take place more in the midrange, and you have all those cheesy vocals and whatnot.

I don’t care, I enjoy both styles and genre titles to me are nothing worth to get into anybody’s face about ^^

Thanks for all the reccomendations provided here, will certainly come in handy for me too!

First off: Thanks Jack Hoesterey, the coupon code will be of use to me 🙂

No need to buy an Traktor Audio 2 IMO, just get an all-in-one like Mixtrack Pro, Pioneer Wego, Denon MC 2000, or a NI S2 / Novation Twitch if you want to spend that kinda money. Best bet is to go to a store if possible to find out which layout YOU like. There is no “best”.

The TA2 is a good deal for sure, TP2 license included. But NI has a sale right now where a TP2 license is only €39,- so I don’t see why you would wanna buy an extra sound interface which only unnecessarily makes your setup more complicated than it has to be or will collect dust somewhere.

Yeah, it’s a well written article for sure that gives food for thought, but I don’t agree with most of its points.

Sure, Beatport charts etc are filled with a lot of rather generic tunes that seem to rehash some of the same popular “key recipes” again and again. But I dunno, lots of successful rock/alternative bands don’t reinvent the wheel which each (popular) song either.

With EDM as soon as you get digging, I don’t see a creative crisis, more on the contrary: There is so much creative, well-produced music available often times for FREE that it’s simply mind boggling and could easily be a fulltime job to keep on top of it all. New subgenres emerging all the time etc.

So to sum up: Hell no! 😀

I find that straight cutting really works well with dubstep. As long as you watch out for your keys, you can create really cool combinations of songs with all the clearly distinguishable drops, builds etc (maybe I’m actually more talking about Brostep, not sure if you mean DUBSTEP Dubstep ^^).

Nice mix, really enjoyed it. Nice programming, nice transitions. Only thing I noticed: You applied a filter somewhere around 27minutes in, that reaaaally took the volume down, dunno if that was intended. Kinda weirded me out though ^^

But good work for sure 🙂

    Hey man,

I really appreciate your thorough feedback – no better way to learn and improve, thanks a bunch! 🙂
I will listen to the mix while going thru your comments later today.

I guess you’re spot on for the most part. Actually I’m just learning proper level control as of now, since I used autogain before but now turned it off completely to not sacrifice sound quality. Monitoring was a bit tough because I relied almost exclusively on the VU meters – my headphones broke and I didn’t have them for recording the mix 🙁
But you’re right anyways, I’m still learning proper gain setting, so thanks for the helpful pointers!

I’ll try to return the favor when you post a mix of your own 🙂

left a comment on sc. Given how long you do this, I find it quite impressive. stick with it and keep up the good work!

(Only, yet personal, dislike for me: the Vocals. But that’s just me.)

Fair enough dude, I’ve been there too: Stoked on a couple of new tracks and just started mixing them without further preparation. Maybe in a sense that’s training too 🙂

I’ll try to listen to your stuff again when you have sth new online 🙂

    Thx for the feedback buddy!

I listened to your house mix on soundcloud and left some comments with minute markers. I’m only saying that as a listener, not because I think I’m a great dj or anything: I enjoyed it overall, you had quite a few nice transitions in there. Only grief I personally had was your programming, because sometimes I felt that you took out the energy you carefully built with a much too mellow tune (happened 2 or 3 times). But that might just be me! 🙂
