Hi DJ Spars … Really appreciate your insight 🙂

My main reasons for selecting this Magma flight case are :
    PROS:
    a) Easy (Near-Instant) Setup/Teardown
    b) A 1-piece compact solution
    c) Works as a workstation & with the cover of the flight case placed underneath, the controller would be at a height where I would not have to bend over
    d) All 3 units would be flush at an identical level … easy to use, easy on the eyes + eye-candy
    e) Setup would look very professional
    f) Price … £109

    CONS:
My main worry … the weight … It’s not mentioned anywhere but I believe it might be approx 50 pounds.
In it’s defence: My Air-Travel with it would be virtually nil … usually will be transported in my 4×4.
Also … 95% of the time I have a hired helper who’ll be physically handling it.

Coming to the UDG Bags …

Pros: They’re NICE … reputable good quality stuff.

    CONS:
    1) Price: £125 for UDG Ultimate Midi Controller Backpack Small (black, orange)
It’s a little costlier but not a deal-breaker. BUT … it doesn’t hold the F1+X1. I’ll have to lug that around separately.

    2) Workstation: It can’t be used as a workstation. I don’t believe I can keep my controller over the bag & perform (kindly clarify this). Even if that were possible, I’d still need 2 bags/stands for my F1+X1 (extra cost) + they won’t sit at the “same” level as the controller.

    3) Setup/Teardown would be longer.

If I’ve overlooked anything I’d be happy for your angles … would really help me nail the purchase.
One last point … If I had to select between the 2 UDG bags which one would you suggest & why? I don;t see much difference between them.

    Thx & Rgds 🙂

    Hi Terry !!

Thank you for your detailed reply. You’ve addressed & allayed all my fears while at the same time highlighting a potential problem (re the weight).

I’m aware it’s gonna be a heavyyyy rig but it seems a nice all-in-one & compact solution for me. Moreover, I usually have a helper (laborer) dedicated to carry all my dj gear (PA + Lights), so I haven’t given much weight-age to the weight factor (pardon the pun).

    1 more query …

Is there any additional space in the flight case to hold/store a laptop during transit? Will the laptop slide around or can it be held/fastened via the velcro straps?

Also … Is there any additional room for power adaptors, a power extension, cables, hard disks, etc.

    Thanks again.

    Regards.

    He just has the words ‘DJ Clak’; and uses either a Simple Delay or a Ping Pong Delay just to allow the ‘DJ Clak’ to Repeat 4 Times; he is not Particular about whether the ‘DJ Clak’ Repeat on the Kick Drum; as the ‘Words’ are Fading Out from the First ‘DJ Clak’;
However; if you make the ‘DJ Prak’ a Sample; then this will be in ‘Sync’ with your Master BPM’ so will not Deviate from the Track Underneath the ‘Words’; so will Never Sound Odd 🙂

Recording it as a sample is fine (any recording software should do the trick). I’ll have to split it into 2 samples as I only want the latter word “Prak” to be repeated. And then probably drop & align the 2nd sample “Prak” with every kick gradually fading out the volume. I guess this would be one way of approaching it although that’s not what you probably had in mind. Which software would provide me with a Ping Pong Delay …and … would you suggest any other approach?

But Yes; Ableton is my ‘Box Of Tricks’; and if you Need Any Help Whatsoever; then I will be Here to Help You (however Small or Large the Question may be); within the Same Day; and if I Need to spend some Time Organising a Respectful Reply with Tuition; then I will make it a Priority for you 🙂

Many thanks Emma. Really appreciate your going out of the way 🙂

There is a Learning Curve to Ableton certainly; but there are Many Tutorials to help you also (Specifically to What You Wish To Accomplish); and I also have a Vast Amount of Knowledge on the Programme; however there must also be other Digital Audio Workstations; though it is Not Possible to DJ in Reason or Logic (though I may be Wrong about Logic); but the Learning Curves with Reason and Logic are Much Greater than Ableton; Oh yes; No Musical Theory is Necessary for Ableton as I have None 🙂
If you could get a Trial Copy of ‘Magic Music Maker’; the Learning Curve is Much Less; and it is Possible to Create an Audio-Style Mix with this Software too; (and the Full Version of the Software is Very Cheap)

I have answered your Robotic Voice/Embeding Voice in your other Thread you made 😎

Well … I have been reading a few of your posts & have noted you’re an avid Ableton user. I’d certainly like to give it a spin when I can afford the time. I’m a software consultant + musician (percussionist) + DJ and so am usually juggling for time 🙂
I think you probably meant “MagiX” (a small typo) … heard of that too. Will probably try to give that a spin too someday and will certainly knock your door for any Ableton pointers when required. Thanks so much for the detailed reply.

I have found a Site that has a number of Free ‘Voice Changers’ thta you could have a look at to see if they suit you:
    http://www.snaphow.com/convert-your-voice-into-fake-voice-change-voice-male-female/
And when you say ‘Embed’ your Name at Certain Parts of your Mix; do you mean like a Little Jingle or something like Radio DJ’s use on their Radio Shows ?
Because if so; and you have a Microphone; this could be Quite Easy for you; and also you could use the ‘Voice Changer’ as well if you are a little Concerned that your Own voice is not Satisfactory 🙂

My voice does register pretty well on the mic as I have practiced a lot over the years being a percussionist and band leader and having introduced my band prior to & during performances + making other important announcements. But I wanted to deviate a bit and so will certainly look at the link you mentioned … plus I’m also looking at something like a bass drum kick loop at the beginning of the Mix with my voice overlaid like eg. “DJ-Prak … Prak … prak … prak” where the word prak gets echoed with a heavy reverb & spaced effect and repeated in sync with the bpm of the kick (something very short … probably just 1 bar/phrase). At times I’d like to use my own voice & at times other voices to add variety. ANy more ideas would be really welcome. Thanks so much for your invaluable input.

Thank You for you In Depth reply; that is Excellent 😎
My Step-Father gave the Software to me as it came Free with his SoundCard; but if you were looking for a Product that would help you to Construct Audio-Style Mixes ‘More Professionally; I can Certainly Recommend Ableton to you; and they have a Trial Version on offer for you to try out 🙂

Thanks Emma for the tip. I’m just a little worried though about Ableton’s “learning curve” … Also, would I need any musical “theory” background as in chords, etc. to use Ableton effectively ? Sadly, I lack this musical theory background.

Could you possible advise/help me out on another point (a little off-topic) …
When I’m creating my mix I’d like to embed my name at the beginning/end of the mix & perhaps during certain transition points. Any ideas on how to do this ?
Also, if i’d like my name in a “female” or “robotic” voice, how can I accomplish that ??
I have posted this in another thread where it might be more appropriate to reply:

Been using this software for 3 years now. Excellent tool for constructing studio mixes … very precise entry/exit points … adjust the volume/treble/base on very precise portions/selections of the track. Looping, etc. I simply adore this software and so was wondering if there’s any other software out there that is as good or better to construct studio-style mixes ?
As “Stiffy” & “Christopher” have mentioned, it can prove “too-easy” for just laying out tracks & getting them mixed perfectly “in advance” … a pre-decided set. You can also simply drop in tracks live into the timeline & get them all perfectly aligned. For live mixing though I’d say it has “limited” usage & applicability. Traktor (or any other equivalent) would be the way to go for live applications. HTH.

MC6, post: 5738 wrote: So basically me and a friend are DJ’ing an event tomorrow night and today we were trying out our speakers for any faults or things we should be aware of (they aren’t great speakers, which is why we’re selling them!)

When the music is played from his laptop, the sound coming from the speakers sounds very fairy-like and airy.. There’s no dodgy sounds, just a really whispery sound. It hasn’t done this before and when played from my own desktop computer it sounds fine. I’m not sure if this is a new thing, because we didn’t have the time to test them before our last gig with them, so they could just sound bad in my small study-room where they are based at the minute but sound fine in the open. I must admit though, they don’t sound good at all when played from his laptop and it’s worrying me about tomorrow night’s event!!

What I’m wondering is.. Does the laptop used REALLY make that much of a difference for us Digital DJ’s? It isn’t a bad laptop in any stretch of the imagination. Any thoughts on this would be great!

Check the soundcard settings. Some soundcards have software installed (which can be accessed from the bottom right near the system date) which provides a variety of “effect” selections eg. reverb, spatial, room, arena, etc. You’d need to switch off all those effects and play it in “virgin” mode. This should do the trick 🙂
