    1. How do I add a mapping to traktor?

Mappings are done primarily through the Controller Editor tab of Traktor’s preferences. Alternatively you could use a program like Xtreme Mapping to create the mappings.

You can simply import the original one you downloaded and it should reset everything back to the original mappings.

    3. Can someone explain how to make a .tsi file of my own? Or at least post a link that gets me there.

I believe DigitalDJTips has a series on mapping for beginners.

in reply to: AMD? vs Intel? #14881

Right now Intel produces better processors. AMD still has a ways to catch up to the I5 and I7 series from Intel.

The choice in processor should have nothing to do with the midi controller you plan on using. The DJ software you’re using (or planning on using) runs on top of Windows, an operating system designed to work on both Intel and AMD processors.

in reply to: Best Solution for iTunes Integration with Traktor Pro 2 #14794

As a user of both Serato and Traktor Pro (and Pro 2), I’ve never found iTunes integration to be that great. I’ve also found that iTunes sometimes rejects my purchased MP3s. Your best bet is to either go one way or the other. Either manage everything in iTunes or manage it all in Traktor.

This is what I’ve been mixing with as of late.

The X1 is an amazing controller if you’re using it with Traktor because it comes pre-mapped to most of Traktor’s control. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve heard some backlash against soundcloud due to the copyright issue. While I understand where they [soundcloud] are coming from, I don’t think it’s okay that users can upload full tracks illegally with no consequences and DJs get their mixes pulled. I recently started using mixcloud, which is a free and legal site to host mixes. You can’t have people download your sets from mixcloud, but they won’t get pulled for using commercial tracks.

Get a fan page. You don’t have to “accept” friend requests. You can have multiple people manage a page. You can see metrics on your page’s performance. You can send out messages as an “artist” or brand without exposing your personal profile you use with family/friends/etc.

If you’re mixing externally, just use a separate program to record the mix.

I haven’t looked at VirtualDJ, no. Why NI can’t make it like LIVE is beyond me. I want to click the control and move my controller. It should be that simple.

in reply to: ID3 Tag Formatting and Style #3633

It doesn’t really matter what system you use, as long as you pick one and stick with it. For example, here is how I organize everything.

    Filename: Artist – Title (Mix).mp3 // Sundriver – Dreamer (Original Mix).mp3
    ID3 Tags
    Artist: Sundriver
    Title: Dreamer (Original Mix)
    Genre: Trance
Comment: Key of the track as determined by Mixed in Key
    Year: 2011

It’s simple, but it works for me. I can find any track I want quickly by simply searching in Traktor or locating on my hard drive.

in reply to: Traktor Keyboard Mapping #3631

Traktor has most of its commands mapped to the keyboard already. If you buy it, you’ll get a printout with all the key mapping. I thought I had a picture of what it looks like, but I can’t find it at the moment.

That said, you can re-map any key to an application function. It is not the most user-friendly mapping editor. Why Native Instruments hasn’t changed it yet, I’m not sure. They should though.

This. Set up custom actions and you can auto-tag and rename all your digtal downloads in 1 click.

I have yet to find a mac app that actually works well for mass renaming mp3s.

in reply to: Seeking Advice: Expanding on Ableton Live with a DVS #3627

First off, this is going to cost a fair bit of money to do. If you go with either Traktor or Serato, you need to buy one of their official soundcard. Serato’s base level box costs $500 in the US. If you really want more outputs though, you’ll need one of the more expensive cards. Native Instruments gets you more bang for your buck in the soundcard department, however it does not have the integration with Live that Serato has. Plus, you will most likely want to buy another turntable. Also, to truly take advantage of using a DVS AND Live, you’re going to need a mixer with more channels.

Okay, so let’s say you do decide to commit to this. You have two options. The first is Serato with its native LIVE integration. From what I’ve seen, the integration is very good. It’s like the two programs just magically melted together. I used Serato for many years before switching to Traktor. If you want a solid DVS, it works brilliantly. Your section option is to use Traktor and LIVE. There is no official integration between the two. Here’s where it gets tricky. You could do two things here. The first is to simply sync the midi clocks of both programs. The problem here is that you cannot have both programs in full view at the same time unless you use a dual monitor setup. You can then choose to mix directly in your mixer or route the audio back into LIVE and be able to add effects to the traktor audio coming in. Once again, you’re going to need a larger mixer if you want to do this. You can also run into latency and sync issues.

Finally, no matter which way you go, you’re going to want a new controller (or 2). Midi keyboards are great for producing, but not so great for programs like Serato or Traktor.
