ParticipantMy bad.
I’m sure there’s a sub-forum of hell for people like me.Tried to redeem myself with a “but..”, couldn’t even think of one.
*Edit*
I’m not usually a wine drinker, so I’ll blame that!Paul Tibbetts
ParticipantYes, I think there has been an increase, like D-Jam said more entrants at entry level will eventually filter out to more ‘pros’ sticking it out at the top end.
I also think that it’s because the term DJ can be used so loosely that it gets thrown around alot.
At the bar I worked a guy turned up each week and failed to mix the same pop tunes week in week out, he was called the DJ.
At the same time I’d go home and mess around with my S2 making mixes for my friends, I’m a bedroom DJ.
I was introduced to my sister’s boyfriend whose older brother held a residency in a club (a DJ) and so he got to play with his older brother’s set up, he called himself a DJ.I’m ok with it, but I think many don’t like calling themselves an ‘amateur’ DJ since it implies they’re not very good, hence everyone’s a “DJ”.

ParticipantWhilst I agree with D-Jam’s point that it would most likely be a quieter sub-forum and the posts wouldn’t otherwise clog up “The DJ Booth” I personally think it’s a great idea.
Ok maybe not for an entire sub forum, but I think it could still warrant a ‘how to guide’ from someone with a bit of experience which could turn into a healthy thread.
I didn’t have a clue what I was doing running my first student night and can still remember almost wetting myself when the manager told me there was no chance of starting a tab for the DJ for the night. At that point an in-depth how to would have been invaluable for me. I had no idea what costs I might need to fork out and who to contact at what point.
Still, the night was a success and has, even up til now, provided me with my biggest earnings for one night’s work, I’d highly recommend it to anyone!
Not bad considering I was 17 at the time π
(I’ve been in education since then, hence why I still haven’t earnt more than that in one night, although I’m not entirely sure what else I could do to top it, keeping all my clothes on)Paul Tibbetts
ParticipantFirstly, I agree with Steelo’s post (as I find myself doing alot reading these forums!)
Secondly, as someone who started digital djing using Traktor 2.0 I can fully understand that there seems to be a big fuss over beatgridding.
As Steelo’s already said, Traktor 2.5 updated and upgraded the beat-gridding process, which as someone who used it in 2.0 I will definitely agree with.
Quite alot of the time Traktor 2.0 would slightly mis-align the grids and I’d find myself browsing youtube to find how to edit the grids, hence the need for tutorials. As of 2.5 I don’t think I’ve needed to do it once though, as most of my problems were with tracks that changed tempo, which is something 2.5 set out to fix.
I also personally think that uploading a ‘how to beat grid in traktor’ video was something that was simple to explain and was used to attract readers to that particular site or blog to increase readership, it’s also a necessary step to explain in any ‘how to dj’ series instead of skipping over and not teaching people how to do it since they’ll go to another course to find the answer.

Pick a theme, a mood, a time of day, a story or any kind of narrative and build the mix around that. Your ideas can come from experiences in your life or from TV , fiction, history or movies or they can just emerge from messing around on the decks and stumbling across songs that work well together. Check these examples and the mix blurbs below.
A lot of mine are about creating a soundtrack to a real or potential experiences.
+1 for this idea.
Whilst my only online mix to date was just to get my housemate dancing (using sudden changes and big bangers) the rest of what I try to do is mix with a theme, could be a mood or location (ie I have a playlist of “beach” music ready to start mixing)

You’re on a deserted island, all there is to eat is coconuts. You eat a bad coconut and it makes you trip out and run around the island a la Leonardo De Caprio in the Beach. This is the soundtrack to that experienceBased on that description I cannot wait to listen to this!

My first two mixes are electro when I had a numark iCDmix 2, 3rd one is dubstep using my S2 + TP2, but I’m into all sorts.
Also, what about a soundcloud group for DDJT Readers? This could also work on Mixcloud. I’ve asked Phil about this before and there are no official plans for it, so if we wanted we could create an ‘unofficial’ one for the readers. But we must mention the group is not affiliated with the site and can’t use the DDJT logo.
Any thoughts?

Instead of liking Facebook pages…. I was thinking of following each other on Soundcloud.
So I will get it started by posting my Soundclound link. My mixes mainly consist of progressive house/electro house/club and commercial remixes:-
http://soundcloud.com/dj-ky-3Sidenote, you’re currently listed as living in workington, I’ve just lived in Carlisle for the past 3 years for uni aha, small world
(moved back down to Birmingham with my parents now though)July 15, 2012 at 12:17 pm in reply to: [Dubstep] Over 30 minutes of Warrior Dancing (Feedback?) #1007781Paul Tibbetts
ParticipantThanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!
And thanks for the comment on the tracks/mixing about losing its way, I’ll learn from it and hopefully the next one I post will have a clearer direction and flow without being all over the place.
I’ve just done a search for the POW mashup on soundcloud where I found it from and I can’t find it, but when viewing the track on my old music blog it’s still uploaded onto soundcloud somewhere, so if you are interested in it (it has a free download link):
http://www.aural-sex.co.uk/2011/03/21/kaniforms-pow-mashup/(like I’ve said, it’s my old music blog that hasn’t been updated for months, and wasn’t that well ran when it was! but it’s still online with some free download links if you fancy a look)

ParticipantThese fit together great!
I’m afraid I can’t offer any constructive criticism because I like it so much.I think you might have pushed me into buying MIK mashup, I’ve been 50/50 til now and I think you’ve just pushed me over the edge.
Is it easy to pick up? The quality of this track seems too good for a first attempt on software so.. affordable (don’t want to call it cheap, that’d imply it’s not good)
Good work π

ParticipantJust going to put it out, if the S4 is too pricey, why not the S2?
It’s Β£317 (google search) here in the UK, which puts it at $500 ish, which is over your budget, but if it fits exactly what you’re after I’m sure you could make the jump?Paul Tibbetts
ParticipantDon’t get me wrong, soundcloud’s still good, especially if you’re using tracks you’ve found on the site, and I wouldn’t leave it altogether if you’ve got a fair few friends on it, I’m just following Phil’s advice π (plus I don’t have many soundcloud friends aha)
I’m sure all the niggles will be worked out by a second mix π
As for my stuff, you’ve encouraged me to stop being so scared and give it it’s own thread π

FatCat, if you go into the settings you can swap the gain control to filter.
Can’t remember which sub-heading it’s under, but it’s definitely there, if you can’t find it google it.

ParticipantI hope not.
It’s the one thing I can dance to π

ParticipantHey man, I’ve been in the same situation as you, heck you’ve done one better than me – I still haven’t posted my mix onto the forums yet! – so I thought I’d drop you a comment or two.
I think the mix is great, I can’t say I’m an expert on the darker side of dubstep (at least not this dark) but the track selection is pretty good, it flows well, apart from (for me) the track from 5:40, its sandwiched between calmer tracks and so it seems a bit out of place without a significant buildup, if you know what I mean.
And as much as I don’t want to point it out, since I’ve been in the same situation with my mixes and the fact it wouldn’t get noticed if this were performed live (the benefits of online distribution eh) is 10:46 I can hear you cueing in a track. It’s not too much of a problem, I guess it’s just me being picky.
Last thing is, as I’ve recently been converted, look up Mixcloud instead of soundcloud, it has an unlimited upload space so it doesn’t use up your soundcloud minutes, as well as timespacing your mixes (you can tell it when the second song comes in and it’ll display what song is playing at the time).
Good work though, you’ve got a new follower π
Keep em coming!Paul Tibbetts

This could be a separate thread, but: do you guys know if there’s any way to batch select and delete low bit-rate mp3’s in the OSX finder? I can’t find a utility or workflow to do this. I incorrectly burned my classic soul CD’s at 128kbps, and they’re floating all over my hard drive. I could make a smartlist in iTunes, but “Show in Finder” will only work on a single file (as far as I know). I tried using OSX smart folders & custom search criteria but the bitrate option doesn’t have any filtering capacities. It’ll show everything or nothing. Augh!
Hey reason, you might have already thought of this but this is how I’d do it:
iTunes > Preferences > Advanced , I’d let iTunes keep my iTunes media folder organized (I already do)
Make my smart playlist, Bitrate > is less than > 130 kb/s ?
Double check the playlist, I found lots of old hip hop that I didn’t want to delete.
Then delete either using iTunes or in the finder. Unfortunately iTunes makes this step even more difficult since you can’t delete straight from the playlist, so I would select all songs to delete (or maybe even select all and then deselect the ones I want to keep) change the album name to something I definitely wouldn’t otherwise have, [Justin Bieber’s Greatest Hits π ], search for that in the main music playlist in iTunes and delete from there (remembering to delete from harddrive). This is of course if you let iTunes organize your music folder.
